We took our chances with a guide who wasn't armed.
We went up in a group of 9 with 2 dogs(seen in the video) bottled water and packed lunches and didn't think more than twice about it.Up until recently Acatenango was the one with the bad reputation not Agua
As a general rule of thumb don't take too much cash with you and no expensive electronics that you can't afford to loose. You could always hire a guide for the afternoon also.I am sure for a couple hundred Q you could hire an armed escort .
Can you tell me anything about the safety of hiking Agua..or how to do it safely? I have been repeatedly warned NOT to hike it because of the bandits in the hills. I'm wanting to just do it anyway. What is your advice?

Can you tell me anything about the safety of hiking Agua..or how to do it safely? I have been repeatedly warned NOT to hike it because of the bandits in the hills. I'm wanting to just do it anyway. What is your advice?
Thanks,
