While I was fascinated by this concept at first ... it is, as Kurt said, a case of Sauron won. Boom. Game over. The bad guys won and that is the end of it.
The only fantasy game as depressing as post-apocalyptic.
Its a different Grimness... In DS you can work with some of the Dragon Kings against the others OR against the others. In Midnight, you are facing a major, mostly unified evil.
Therein, for me, is the difference between the two.
At first I wasn't sure about getting this game, as it looked like the mentality behind the game was along the lines of "He won Round One by Knock Out. The bell rang on the count of 9... but now it's time for Round Two."
Now that I watched this episode, you really told us what made it different and appealing: There's a desparate struggle for survival.
I will try it, thanks to you Kurt, and I will never doubt Fantasy Flight Games' capacity to come up with great spins to typical fantasy.
Hey Kurt, I went back to try to find that "D&D in space" review you did, but after searching for a while, I think what I'm remembering is you just mentioning Dragonstar here. If I'm wrong, and you did review a similar game, please point me in the right direction. If you haven't reviewed Dragonstar or a similar game, I would really like to see it reviewed!
Reminds of "Mistborn" by Brandon Sanderson. It deals with a world where the bad guy won and the good guys are basically organized criminals on the level of Ocean's 11.
This review was amazing. I went online and found a copy of this book the next day. I've been reading avidly since I got it and look forward to implementing it soon. *rubs hands together menacingly*
Thank you for these reviews. They are truly informative.
I have always loved setting that go away from the usual "forces of good can never be destroyed and that they shall stand for thousands of years" campaigns. Midnight is imho one of the best settings for evil and sadistic DMs, opps did i say that last little bit out loud? >:D
I wish they could reproduce Midnight, because I never had the change to experience it :'''C

Midnight is probably the best 3.5 Setting out there. I played it for so long and I'm still not tired of them.

It is my favourite Setting for 3.5 rules, it's a pity Fantasy Flight abandoned it.
But i always thinked it deserved a system of it's own.

Well delivered pitch. If I knew people who still roleplayed , Id be excited.
I had a Dnd campaign where the magic users, elves, were completely evil and the clergy were the good guys in monotheistic world.

Do Dragonstar next! I always liked that setting. Sadly, Dragonstar wasn't even updated to 3.5, but it's still a very cool universe.

Draginstar has been on the "if we have time" list for a while. Hopefully soon.
