  • IMHO Whether you set up on your left leg, or whether you get there in transition or backswing, you have got to be on your left foot, with your left side separating from your chin before you swing through the ball. Depending on your setup, you may need to drive a lot or drive a little with the hips, or right knee and hip; or left knee, hip and shoulder to get there. Things like your backswing pivot and your plane and your transition, and for some people, an arm-drop - they all need to be doing

  • Mclean is so wrong in this. Hogan did ALL his lateral motion BEFORE he reached transition... then from transition, he just turned as hard as he wanted, which is EXACTLY what he said he did in the book.

  • Hogan said, Hogan said.... F**k you!

  • I have to laugh, this is all wrong. Back in those days they were trying to do a S&T swing but never got it right. Hogan was good but if he understood S&T he would have been far better. He was dead wrong with his lateral move. That is why he hooked it people. We are so much more evolved these day why look at the old swings. We have got the only true method which is S&T.

  • @TheSeer101 ... mike and andy would like a word with you.

  • @senorchipotle Tell them to email me asap. I have some idea's that can help. Hurry up too becuase I will not have access to a computer for 7 days. I will be in Thialand and you know what I will be doing there;)

  • @senorchipotle Mike and Andy have ruined the potential careers of many future golfers. If you speak for them you should be ashamed of your self!

  • @robinsongolfacademy This is nothing but conjecture; it's ridiculous.

The world's best golfers all swing the club differently and no single way of doing so is *correct* - If it was everybody would be doing it! If a student learns S&T and it doesn't work for them they will change it. Simple. Careers will not be ruined by it!

The only people suffering due to S&T are those PGA pros out there who milk their students each lesson, teaching them very little so that they keep coming back.

  • @TheSeer101 He hooked it because of his lateral move? He was FAMOUS FOR N O T HOOKING IT. As in N. O. T.

  • It's amazing anyone can hit a golf ball thinking about all this crap. Do you think about your elbow, hips and shoulder when you throw a ball? Give me a break. It's no wonder most people can't play golf for shit.

  • actually you DO turn your hips before you shift your weight, but it doesnt mean you wont move laterally... watch any good player and there hips spin, AND shift, not just a spin... not just a shift...

  • There a very few capable instructors, you have to be able to tell the difference, good luck finding one. Golf instruction is full of washouts, wannabees and outright posers. How is this possible? A struggling golfer is naive and desperate, it is like shooting fish in a barrel.

  • the book indeed says about lateral movement

  • There is a slo-mo drill that Hogan did to produce the proper movement of the lower body. Search on youtube Hogan slo-mo drill. I just started doing it. It works!! One of the greatest Golf teachers ever taught that drill as well...His name was Harvey Penick.

  • give him the forward leaning shaft at impact we need to compress the ball consistently all the good players do this ,, control the trajectory with the release of the clubhead , high shot = alot of wrist release low shot = no wrist release thanks

  • one of the keys to hogans swing is he learned to get the weight moving down on his front foot when he transferred the weight not up on it ,,( left heel coming off ground at impact ,, i see this in alot of my students ,, weight needs to move down and through , hogan said he like to take two divots 1 with the clubhead one with knuckles , check my lessons out and my swing at hitmanhawky best lessons on the tube thanks,, proper grip and release was key in hogans swing supinate left wrist at impact

  • As the club begins to build up speed and the left hip makes the first move down the target line before it turns backward, the width of the stance will hold up just fine. If you have a tendency to lose your balance, your stance might be to narrow. w w w (dot) golferbreak80 (dot) c0m

  • yes i agree with mclean all the way. There IS lateral motion happening along with the turning of your hips. Tired of these people with there ideas and crap. Hogan had it right before he left us so quit disrespecting the man.

  • @golfswagga23 Hogan also had a lateral move in the backswing. He there for needed to only turn out on the downswing, which made his ball striking exceptional and ahead of it's time.He eliminated a move in the swing which required timing and cold falter, not here.He was centered at all times.never had to worry about over shifting or undershifting,he just moved down up and around on the follow through.

  • @secretogolf this is exactly right, by the time he got to transition, he had already made his lateral move toward the target, such that from transition, all he needed to do as he said was to turn hard as he wanted with his hips and use his right foot and leg. everyone misses this point, but if you dont move laterally as he did during the backswing, there is no way you can hit it his way.

  • @sandwah9 Other keys which are not always understood is that Hogan used his right hand/elbow/shoulder in the takeaway which created a lateral move not rotary, this is much in alignment w The Golfing Machine. This created tension in his legs and torso which made it easy to move forward while still in the backswing..

  • that becuase no players can do it lol.. anybody who is looking for the answer from these videos will never find it.. it takes hard work

  • That's ;cuz these Kon Dree Acks can't do it properly.

  • One important thing about sliding though: Keep your head+shoulder level BACK doing it. Otherwise the downswing is completely ruined. :)

  • I said Hogan was wrong because in 5 Lessons he speaks alot about turning/spinning the hips as a start of the downswing (despite whatever any revisionist would claim these days).

  • You should def. slide hips more than spin them. Spinning them is an ensured disaster, and will make anyone come over the top. A sliding hip will turn naturally (it can't do anything but this), get your weight over, and give your upper body/arms a chance to stay on the inside, including getting you club in a nice hit position for your irons (hands well infront of ball). Don't *ever* start your downswing with the spin of your hips!! Hogan was WRONG about this!

  • Hey, you need to go back and reread the 5 Lessons where he says to get lateral movement of the hips. Its really a combined move and he does describe it well. Get out the highlighter. So much info in such a short book.

  • clemshaw has a great vid teaching how to do the hogan power move

  • Mr. Hogan states over 40 times in "Five Lessons," TURN THE HIPS TO START THE DOWNSWING. The reason he states to start the down swing by turning the hips is because at the top of his swing, he's already displaced his center mass/ weight over his left leg. With his center mass/weight already left, all he had to do was turn the hips to start the downswing, the key point with Mr. Hogans swing was that lateral motion was not needed to start the downswing

  • Mr. Jim McLean is right; Mr Hogan does state that THERE HAS TO BE ENOUGH LATERAL MOTION FORWARD TO TRANSFER THE WEIGHT TO THE LEFT FOOT (pg. 90 Five Lessons). However, he doesn't state when this should occur only that it must happen prior to turning the hips to start the downswing

  • I agree with this 100%. The essential lateral move already happened before starting the down swing. Lateral move is crucial but it also create lots of movement. There is less moving parts in Hogan's on the down swing. All that has to happen on the down swing is to hit the ball by turning the hip.

  • ha! 'watch that FOOTage' he says at the end. a play on words no doubt.

  • Its very EASY as Hogans secret enabled this to happen time after time.

  • yes it is VERY EASY! but not at first! but once its ingrained, this and his lag made it nearly impossible to not hit a solid shot.

  • It's extremely difficult to learn or intimate Hogan's swing in FULL , especially if you are a beginner, there are so much nuances in his swing that ONLY Hogan could execute and synchronize them consistently (ie. The lateral movement ). One of the reason is that his swing is very flat, so there is more "around" the ball kind of movement on the way down, to hit the ball flush consistently with this flat swing is hard, very hard...Well, if you have Ben's physique and talent, it's different story.

  • i slide my hips to much how do i stop

  • get your left shoulder on top of the right foot on the back swing at the top. it will give you room to clear, rather then having to make room by sliding

  • don't slide them so much

  • don't move your head.Coil on the backswing, slide your hips to start the downswing and keep your head steady throughout the swing.

  • The hip slide is a key move to get the club inside because it opens up just enough room to drop the right elbow down.

  • If you start your hips back from the top of the backswing before your club gets to the top you will get that lateral movement automatically. It's split secound timing as you start back with your hips before your arms finish the backswing. This is the real secret ; consciously turning your hips back round and automatically getting that lateral movement. If anyone is confused then I will answer those people who reply. One thing I will say is that a one piece tyakeaway is important.

  • Ben Hogan played with iron clubs that were E-1 You have to study laws of physics to understand why he struck the ball so solidly. He was a pure ball striker and there was more mass behind the ball at impact. Not only did Hogan slide his hips on the down swing but he moved his right foot forward and sometimes as much as a foot. This means that he shifted 100% of his weight forward. Check out his other video clips and watch the right foot.

  • Any keys for initiating this hip slide and turning sequence into the golf ball? Any mental keys or distinct little body movements that help to promote it consistently?

    Race!

  • From the ground up...feet, knees, hips...

  • This is a clip from 'The Ben Hogan Collection' 3 DVD set disk #2. The speaker is Jim McLean.

  • then why todays pros says hipe slide is a killer fault?

  • The hip slide is a killer fault on the back swing, it is a good thing on the downswing

  • moe norman's swing also had a very noticeable later hip move

  • Slide and turn...you get the swing!

  • @KOC He slides forward in the backswing.Turns in the downswing.Hogan should be credited in part forThe Stack and Tilt.He eliminated a huge timing move which made hime such an ADVANCED ball striker.

  • @KOC

Wrong as usual. KOC, how many swings have you butchered through the years?

  • There is a slight lateral movement before rotation. Draw a line down and watch tigers initial hip position at square and downswing when his hips square. he has shifted toward the target inches. Most ams keep laterally shifting.. good players move laterally briefly then clear.

  • whoever the old guy is, he has totally misunderstood hogans hip movement. there is no lateral movement on the downswing, it ocurrs in the backswing. his right hip moves towards the target, which is the lateral movement. going down, his left hip drops back to the same level of his right. this appears to be a 'slide'. watch carefully, he doesnt 'spin' his right goes back, then his left comes back to give space infront of the body

  • Yes, you are correct 100 percent; there was no lateral movement on the downswing, or I would say significant lateral motion to start the downswing. Mr Hogans lateral movement/weight transfer occured in the backswing, this why his lumbar spine was always angled towards the target and his thorax and cervical spine appeared angle away from the target. Pre setting the thoractic and cervical spine away from the target makes Hogans mechanics easier to execute.

  • Raceching, the left wrist remains cupped because of the centrifugal force, it has nothing to do with holding it back rigidly. It all happens by itself if you use the hands to pull the club thru the ball, instead of using the wrists to hit the ball with the clubhead.

  • Amazing video, thanks for posting. You know Hogan was only a slight built guy, which induces me to pose the question. How the hell did he hold on to that wrist angle...so late into the downswing?

  • Also remarkable is that clubs were much heavier in those days.

  • cos he was a god

  • My college coach made us copy everything he ever did. I met him prior to his passing. He was awesome to us. He is still the swing I try to copy.thanks for posting

  • just ordered the collection :)

  • amazing hogan footage

  • Good Hogan footage here.
