Why spend our lives aspiring to lick the boots of the petersons and mozarts of this age. They were MEN and some brilliantt youg man or woman will one day surpass them. Thats the way it oughta be.
@GarlandDrest Sure, I can understand that. It's interesting to me though. One can't "play what they feel" in a certain genre if they aren't a true listener. So many players in my high school tell me they won't transcribe a Roy Eldridge solo because that would be stealing. In a way, that's saying, "I won't learn the theory of relativity, I'll make up my own first."
@AJGdrums You know who Martin Drew is? I mean who would know that? I used to go see him play w/Oscar in San Francisco at the Fairmount Hotel. He'd be there w/Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (The Great Dane) and sometimes Joe Pass. Those were great gigs.
I got to see OP at the Albert Hall in London maybe 8 years ago. I just hoped he played Satin Doll. He did. Returning at the end on the concert for an encore he sat down and played....Satin Doll. I nearly wept!! The last time I saw him perform. RIP OP.
You see that's the beauty of music - just by doing something you enjoy, for a what actually is a self-centred thing, becomes a giving, deed of goodness, not by morals but by music. That's really cool.
At one point, he launched into Basie's "Corner Pocket" ....during a performance of the band I play in, I recently did the same ...it was met by tumultuous applause. Sorry, Oscar (Master)....i stole Your thunder.
LOL. You're experiencing MMOS Mass Media Overwhelmed Syndrome, where the confusion of a plethora of actors and musicians with similar appearances are bleeding into one another. I believe there's medication for that now.
Oscar Peterson said once when Art Tatum came into the bar where he was playing that he had to stop playing. (Tatum learned to play by roller piano - 4 hands and was partially blind.)

The greatest jazz pianist who ever lived. The only criticism I've ever heard of Oscar, is that he was too good.
