I could not say it any better than windsofmarch, whose comments are as amazing as this woman's voice. I can only weakly say, "ditto." Mahalia's voice speaks for itself. Thanks for posting the video and the comment.
I love when she sings..everytime i hear a baby cry, or touch a leaffffffffffffffffffffffffffffeeeeeeeeeeee.wow..she put so much emotion in that note.
@Topg1 Written in 1953, I Believe was popularized by Frankie Laine, a chart topping singer in the 1950s (he sang the Rawhide theme). Like Mahalia he sang it with deep feeling. Both versions are wonderful. In our Slovak-American household everything stopped whenever Mahalia sang on TV. God bless her!
Gente, parece coisa de outro mundo, quando comparado com o que se vê hoje em apresentações musicais, na TV. A iluminação, o cenário, o figurino e a interpretação. É uma prece cantada. Só um Deus muito insensível não se impressionaria com uma prece dessas, heheh...
Man I tell you I'm 21 years old and I listen to what I call great music as far as jazz, R&B, Soul, Gospel, Country even classical and I tell you she's the greatest AND she only sang one genre of music (Gospel) and she's my favorite singer then there's everyone else no questions Asked! Also, I read her biography, seen all her intervews, listened to all her music, and it seems like her soul was spotless as if she was an angel from GOD Listen to that VOICE
Mahalia's "I BELIEVE": the beauty of this performance is simply UNbelievable. While on vacation in a family hotel, just before dropping off I "heard a baby cry" thru the thin walls of our hotel.
The lyrics of this song came to mind, I sneaked down to the lobby with my laptop and had Mahalia singing it for me over and over. Thank you, dearest Mahalia, the greatest singer of them all. Oh, and thank you, baby, for crying!!!!!
I will forever be thankful to god for allowing me to share this part of the world with you Mrs.Jackson.any where else and I may not have had the chance to hera your sweet voice..
I fear death no more, when I hear this powerful and beautiful woman sing. She has God by her side, she is blessed..........I too am blessed and inspired by this vision and voice.
We are sooo blessed that Mahalia shared her power with us. Watching this just reduces me to tears. Thankfully free from affectation, over-arrangement, or any other such nonsense, Mahalia delivers a simple, impassioned performance that rises above everything. I am white, but Mahalia spoke to me like no other could. Thank you, Mahalia my precious, you were/are a true inspiration.
Wow...what an awesome performance! I love the comment that "windsofmarch" made: When God sought out a way to breathe his holy spirit into mankind in a way that would electrify and strengthen the faith of the weakest, he found Mahalia and blessed her with the talent to make the Word ride on her voice. There is power just in hearing her sing...
I have loved this song forever, but I've never heard any performance come close to this. And I had thought I heard some great performances. This simply is in a class by itself, as is Mahalia Jackson. My goosebumps have goosebumps! AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
MAHALIA JACKSON is the most important and the best Gospel singer thar the world has ever heard or seen. May God bless this poor, sad and lost humanity.
She was very clear seeing. She let the songs she sang tell their own stories. She wasn't a showwoman. She was a true artist and she stayed true to her art. She also happened to be in daily life a totally real person, never a diva.
@doubledutchlady Mahalia moved once soul at a time, one concert at a time, one show at a time until she had fulfilled a lifelong mission of immense clarity and purpose. Not a bad thing at all!!!
Mahalia Jackson was a very close friend of my mom's, so I was blessed to attend some of her concerts and actually sit with her. The voice is definitely God given and to hear her sing in person is one of the highlights of my life. So inspiring is this song that maybe we need to have it piped in to the halls of Congress because there are so many people praying, Democrats, Republicans, Independents alike, and I believe we are all praying for each other and our country.
Bollocks! The 'Soul' doesn't exist.Man created the soul through stories. Mahalia's voice is not god given as god does not exist. She was a black woman and black people are born with powerful voices. It's down to genetics and evolution now FUCK OFF!
You are sincerely ignorant. A person's race does not determine the power of someone's individual voice. If you do not believe in God-fine.
But please spare us your obvious racism and stupidity. I have heard a lot of things said about my people. This is one of those old school myths that needs to die.
But until you get your confusion in order it will remain like a festering cancer.
i partially agree with both of you. from what i have seen in general black people do seem to be better singers.this may or may not be because of genetics. i think it is because singing is a very big part of black cultue.i dont think its a "myth"as a myth is somthing widley belived but untrue.the charts in the u.s a hevily saturated with music by or in the style of black people yet the the population is mostly white .and yes there is a GOD
I would not venture a guess about why blacks excel at singing, but it is my observation that they really do. Listen to Mahalia Jackson. Her voice was exceptional. . . even for blacks. I've never heard a voice that can touch hers--not top, side nor bottom. She is uniquely one of a kind. Amazing doesn't even cover it. She was born for this purpose and created to do it. There is a God.
Wow you said a mouthful you top it with that comment. Its almost scary because it so true, this woman man i cant go on, its almost saying there's no earthly words to describe..her
The great anthropologist Margaret Mead did study of African Americans adopted by white, non-musical families. These kids went on to traditionally Black colleges like Oberlin. They were unable to dance with their peers, and sat in the corner as wallflowers. They were unable to participate in singing groups. I come from a family where Dad was musical, Mom was not. We all sang together. Myself and one sister can really sing. Mom and the other sister still can't hold a tune in a bucket!
When God sought out a way to breathe his holy spirit into mankind in a way that would electrify and strengthen the faith of the weakest, he found Mahalia and blessed her with the talent to make the Word ride on her voice. There is power just in hearing her sing with such stunning conviction. In a time when so many don't know what to believe in anymore, so many could benefit from just sitting down and watching this brief video of her expressing her faith. Sublimely powerful beyond human words.
@windsofmarch Amen to everything you said here...I am Danish and Live now in U.S.A., but at age 18 I saw her live in Copenhagen Denmark, and tears was flowing...Nobody will ever come close to her GREAT singing...Thank you and Bless you for the beautiful words on this post...Blessing from Lone
@windsofmarch you are right on. My mom listened to her and cried. She wasnt accepted by her family or church. It broke my heart. She passed in 2001 but I feel her everyday.
@DontCountUsOut Wow you never know how much people have in common until you hear their story. My mother went through the same turmoil, not accepted by her family or church and she passed in 1997.
Who is Nora Aunor? What is she about? Do you know her well? I'm not contradictin you, but you used some pretty strong language here. Somebody else saw a comparison. I can't say one way or the other, since I haven't heard her. No offense intended at all. I just don't know.

Upon seeing it, one will never overcome the tearful emotions evoked by Mahalia's song at the end of the Lana Turner version of Imitation of Life. No man can so be made of unfeeling granite that he does not cry at her singing in that movie.
I know my Dad owned the album that song was on and we used to listen to it. I think I have it in storage somewhere. The album is very hard to find and I hope I can find it. I remember the credits said the conductor of the orchestra was a young new talent named Johnny Williams. I have always wondered if that is John Williams of Star Wars fame. This album is very bluesy gospel which my Dad who passed away 11 yrs ago loved the blues and passed that along to me.
I have this album you speak of in the attic. It was magnificent. Recorded in 1961, it was a jewel. Johnny Williams also worked with her on Great Songs of Love and Faith. Sony should release it again in CD. There are many others out there she made that are terrific. Garden of Prayer (1966) is pure gospel and mostly recorded in Chicago in her church, Greater Salem Baptist.
AMEN to all the comments - this woman was the BEST - COULD U IMAGINE if she had gone SECULAR? A GOD GIVEN GIFT - THAT VOICE - but Mahalia loved God so much she wanted to sing and dedicate her voice to him! She was also the mentor of my favourite all-time singer - Aretha - but Mahalia was UNTOUCHABLE - BY ANYONE - except God himself - RIP Mahalia!
A bygone era of a passionate black gospel singer. Her eyes filled with tears, and sometimes they shut because she's just a natural, relax, and expressive when it comes to her singing her love for God. No doubt about it.

From this performance, one can get an idea what Holiness of Father in heaven is like.
First there is what us,Men can experience.
Second, there are His angels singing to Him.
Lastly, there is His Holiness in Full.
If Mahalia sings in this heavenly way and she is a shadow of the Father, how Great is the Father indeed!
Aretha and Mahalia, they SURELY broke the mold after these lovely sisters :)
