Even as the younger modern generation we all must find the time to preserve the best of our cultural ways, skills and talents from our ancestors in order to define who we really are and where we are truly from. Ashley Thao is a good example of what hmong that.
But when I HEAR crickets, birds chirping, and leaves and rice stalks rustling against each other, in your 3 minute "demo," in addition to your camera movements (on both the rice stalks in front of Ashley and her) and your short montage attempts (even within this short 3-minute duration), I was immediately impressed by your natural talents for authenticity, realism, creativity, and natural landscape, in addition to meticulate camera work.
99.8% or so of the socalled films, clips, movies, & travelogues posted on Hmong, by Hmong, are really worthless, although the subjects they originally shot were potentially good, worthy of time and study. First of all, 99.5% of them couldn't shoot worth much; secondly, in post shooting "editing," they inserted 110% junk, unrelated noises in the form of music (which are, by themselves, not bad, utilized in proper contexts) into their footage. It's nauseating.
The reason I suggested that you do an Ethnographic film --- as opposed to, say, doing just the average directless meandering cliche pieces riddled with unrelated and unwanted cheap songs --- is that by looking at your 3-minute "demo" here, you seemed to have the natural talents to understand filming, in general.
Ciajsia, you seemed to be well versed in videography. Perhaps you should consider doing ETHNOGRAPHIC filming/videography. Up until a couple years ago, people had to have those 20lb cameras to get quality pictures; these days 2lb hand-held cameras are almost as good, so doing serious ethnographic films should be easily done. Talents like Ashley Thao's need to be professionally recorded for posterity purposes. Her talents are obvious & her voice is truly exquisite.
I met her before at a Hmong cultural show. She's amazing. I love these ancient folk songs. I haven't heard green Hmong folk songs in a long long time. Good to hear.

This video doesn't just deserve 5 stars. It deserves a billion stars! If Ashley Thao ever makes a movie with her singing, I will surely buy it. She makes this type of Hmong folksinging sound so good. She's amazing. Does she have any lug txaj movies out?

She looks so BEAUTIFUL! I love her entire outfit here, and whoever did her make-up did a tremendously great job on it! Her voice is so nice and soothing to listen to, too.
