Dudes right. Anytime you start to haul over a mile with srapers it is not as efficient. Trucks are the way to go. Scrapers are for bringing down mountains and short fast hauls. Bombs away. LOL IUOE3
@xrjockey It is a common mistake made by estimators and engineers that scrapers are for short haul only and trucks are better for the longer stuff. However nothing could be further from the truth taken the actual numbers along with some true field experience to decide the numbers true worth (Did all you 2+2 four year degree civil engineers catch that)? Firts the support equipment cost goes down with scapers. With good haul roads like the ones truck require one good scraper hand can maintain it.
@HomebrewCigarsmoker Further-more, their is no need for a large dozer in the fill to spread the material since scrapers spread their own material and never quit moving ( bonus) while their dumping. One 815/25 can handle the compaction and fill. Also scrapers dump 100% of their load every time(bonus #2); unlike trucks so their is no haul back. Thats 2 less tractors 2 less operators and two performance bonuses, & thats just in the fill and haul. We gaining on the long haul trucks yet?
@HomebrewCigarsmoker I would have to add that the excavator only moves dirt ONE BUCKET AT A TIME.
By contrast, one 657 moves about 44 CY,HEAPED. Multiply that number by the number of 657's one chooses to use and you have a veritable conveyor belt of earth being moved.
@25mfd Lets not forget I am in favor of moving dirt with scrapers VS trucks espeically on long hauls. You are correct about the material generated in one cycle. However, Im not sure of your point, but i believe your referring to load times. The truth of the mater is in a perfect world load time is the only place a push cat beats a comparable hoe, but with all the other advantages its worth investment. In a non- perfect world where the scraper stops while waiting for the push cat to contact.
@25mfd The clock is running while the scraper waits for the push cat. While the push cat is over pushing, or backing up, or catching up the clock is running and it usually stops around 45 seconds to a 1 min 15 sec. So then the position is have 2 push cats so we sure there a cat ready to push. Now we got another big expensive dozer in the cut. I havnt even begun with the maintanance, spinning cut tire issue. All the while a hoe is cranking em out 1 min at a time running on grease.
@25mfd Heavy clay and rock is the norm here in the ozarks. But even with loose soil as here there is still the issue of operators spinning the tires especially when using push pulls. Of course good operators minimize tire spin, but if you have looked lately good scraper hands are rare. Companies usually have to grow their own. Then there is the issue of transmissions when scrapers load them-self and a over cut issue spending more time than needed cutting and loading.
Yeap, scrapers work very well moving soft materail such as top soil stripping for job sites and sand as well, but you start trying to strip clay and harder more resitant earth its very hard on the transmissions and the planets/hubs, creates alot of heat fast, also is hard on the cutting edges, hydraulic pumps ect, excavators are built to dig into the earth, and with the right machine and a team of dump trucks, overburden material can be easily removed very quickly.
@73elrodalexander My arguement is to top load the scrapers as if they where trucks. That way you dont need the large dozer in the fill to knock piles down, an 815/25 can maintain the fill and compaction= only one op and one machine to maintain. Also one good scraper hand can maintain haul roads= no blade=less over head. Less is better $.
@25mfd All in all for a couple of rounds yes the self loading will be more productive. However taken into account a week and then a month of hauling top loading with a 1min hoe is going to win out in the cut due to a drastically reduced maintenance issue. Plus all the other advantages still exist on the haul and fill using the scraper. bottom line is the long term numbers say scrapers not trucks and top loading rather than push cat or push pull.

Danke. Greets
the C means stronger pumps or something? like you said they are def good i just hate seeing narrow pads ona huge block body like that. once you get into the size that big they look like that lol
The 'C' is just to define that particular model. The 'C' are current in the 385's, although i'm not sure of the first year - I drive a 385C which is a 2007. The tracks look about right to me although it is difficult to tell from the angle of the video. Narrow tracks on excavators are 'Rock Tracks' with deep grousers, which are generally used in quarries.
Any operator should be able to load a truck with a minimum of passes. You can't tell if an operator is any good from an 8 minute video loading dumpers.

@HomebrewCigarsmoker Soil conditions would have to be assessed for sure but the soil in this vid looks moist at worst.
657's should have no problem this. No pushcats would be needed.
I wouldn't imagine you would need pushcats with twin engine scrapers unless the soil is heavy clay or very rocky.
