I think this was a mimed recording for UK's Top of the Pops show 1977, for Queen's First EP release which got to no.17 in the charts. Other similar TOTP Queen recordings were done for Seven Seas of Rhye, Killer Queen and Las Palabras de Amor.

Hmm it's definitely not live, but also another version.. They must've recorded it in advance specially for this.. I mean Freddie looks too relaxed on the high notes, and sometimes you can actually hear his breath get cut off for a new take.. And of course the backing vocals but that could otherwise have been a backing track..

Why re-recorded ? Simple, Musicians Union ! During the mid 70s songs featured on programs such as TOTP had to be re-recorded specially for each performance (usually at the BBC studios) or had to use the TOTP orchestra - this was to ensure that session musicians got the royalties they deserved (paid once for the record and again each time it was performed on TV). Seems crazy now but this was the era of 'home taping is killing live music' and all that.

I love Brians guitar work but it always seems like he butchers his own solos live and is actually straining to try to play them even close to the originals. What the hell is up with that? I mean this solo did not even require the usual studio multi-layered guitar on most of their songs and he still only just came close the the original.

This is the second time I've had to make a comment like this, but.... If you really love Brian's guitar work, then you'd understand that he plays each solo with variations to the original version. Also, I don't see how he butchers this solo. In my opinion, this solo is much better than the one on the original recording.
