To answer the question of whether or not this is actually "live": You'll notice that the guitars are not plugged in, and there are no microphones on the drum kit.

However, listen to the vocals on this and then on the recorded version, and you will notice the difference, in both Chaka and the backup singers.

Conclusion: Live vocals (with the exception of the guitarist's "talk box" part), recorded instrumentation. This was a common practice in the 70s.
