This is why a redundant backup is a must, no matter how high quality (or low quality) your hard drive is. Anything less than duplicate data storage in a remote location is a reckless gamble.
that is the lovely sound of a dead Maxtor hard drive. that sound believe it or not is produced by the spindle of the drive itself. if you open the lacie enclosure up, you can just stick a new drive in there and it'll work assuming the board on it accepts the size.
The power supplies are a GIANT problem for LaCie. I have now had SIX power supplies fail for me both the type that gives 12V, 2A and 5V, 2A and that that gives 12V, 2.2A and 5V 2.0 A both in combination with LaCie d2 drives and CD drives or plugged-in without load! The supply gives still correct voltage but can not handle more than 1A output after a year and the drive, which needs up to 1.6A during power up fails to mount and just gives a repeated clicking sound.
In addition to power shorts, and adapter exploding, LaCie admits if your drive appears to not be showing on the desktop or if you hear a soft clicking that it is the power supply. If you are out of warranty they don't care and want you to buy a power brick. no recall issued for this hazardous issue. Anyone else with this problem?
I have one answer for you - Maxtor Diamondmax. They all make that sound but this sounds like you got nailed by 2 Maxtors in a RAID 0 setup, according to the near simultaneous musical beeps.
Yes I agree, don't waist your money on a Lacie product, they don't last... My 250GB crashed on me twice already... They are not worth having around even when you take care of them...
Would have been worse if it died after a year or more. I have an external Western Digital HD 1TB. It's still workung perfectly but it is starting to make scraping sounds. I have 671GB of data on it so it's to late to mirror it. I have my life on that thing! Depressive);
don't ever buy lacie ..better buy a separate harddisk western digital and a metal hard disk enclosure ..its dead cheap and way better than lacie plastic shit ...got my lacie drive one day and it's making funny noises too ...
lucky you, cool phail noise! lol i think (well in my case, if it was my drive) it would be worth the phail just to hear that noise ^_^ i would play with that for years! and probably try to fix it and break it more... yes im a total geek i have no life and im sad.
both of yer HD's in that box are nuked mate! the R/W heads are stuck to the platers ( inside there are maxtor hard drives, i know by the sounbd they make
Sounds like an arcade game :P

Oh and I forgot to say: If you value your data, don't buy Maxtor. Avoid them like the plaque

I second you. Mine is 1TB and it has crashed only about 5 months of buying it. I lost a lot of data. Lacie is very bad, can not depend on it.

Oh and btw, that melody is probably the telephone that is ringing.
HyouriV3 4 years ago
Nope, this is a failed hard drive.
Obviously, the LaCie uses a Maxtor.
In fact, there are some Maxtor drives that, when failure that prevents startup has occurred, will emit tones. It's known as "Musical Maxtor."
Check it out on Google.

sound is edited or played via another device - like a cheap jackpot or sth like that
BrickG 5 years ago
Umm .. no .. it IS the actual hard drive .. in fact Maxtor** HDD's have been known to sometimes make those noises when failing.
**I only say Maxtor because those are the only drives that actually make that particular noise
soccer33MASTER 4 years ago
Why is t making a melody?
xXxmidgexXx 5 years ago
It's probably the spindle motor trying to spin up but is blocked by the R/W head & arm assembly.
This happens when you drop it och bump it.
