@colddrake80 it can fire directly. 105s always been used for direct fire when needed. That's not a problem. 105s are light enough to be moved to the front line relatively quickly. M777 isn't as good in direction fire, because the whole howitzer bouncing around the floor when the barrel is aimed directly, and aligned flat with the ground. 105s fit the role very well as direct fire. They are not anti-tank weapons, but in mountain warfare it's useful.
@SamuelMoralesJr Okay, I suppose a HEAT round would help with the anti-armor work but a good mountain gun is always a nice thing to have. Thanks for the info.
Also the guys left the trails between rounds because it's a drill when not using the platform. Incidentally, 48hrs later the lads in the video were doing it for real. 748 rds fired into various Iraqi targets including a T55 and a bloke on a push bike armed with an RPG. The 2 i/c of the gun looks like a monkey and was nicknamed Bubba due to his huge bottom lip - result of a punch from an SAS bloke in Kenya the year previous. The unit is G Bty 7 Para RHA. Happy days!
Christ there's some right weird and wonderful theories and comments on here. The No2 was leaning over to insert the strut jack because if he went under and the jack collapsed or the gun moves, he'll be crushed. I'm shouting because the blokes respond better than if I sang to them. We don't use HEAT, and never have (used to use HESH until 15 or so years ago) .We're using HE. The shell and charge are going in seperately because it's not a mated ammunition system like the L119 variant the US use.
The part that you see hooked onto the truck, then partially burried in the dirt is a "spade." When it is dug in, it assists with limiting displacement from the gun caused by the recoil. If it were not engaged the entire gun would eventually have to be moved so the gun could get back in line (as oppsed to the gunner using the elevation and bearing adjustment wheels-DAMN can't remember the terms, it has been 10 years through lol
We British only have a small army and we don't always have the best equipment either. But in every conflict we have shown that we are a force not to be fucked about with.
Ohh and grow a brain cell we are supposed to be allies
@hivemindsean666 Enjoyed watching my brothers-in-arms! Served alongside Para Regt while I was in the 82nd Abn Div many years. Great guys, totally professional, a delight to serve with! Paratroopers are paratroopers, regardless of uniform. Got my Brit wings at Depot back in '75. Believe our 82nd Div Arty replaced their M102 105's with British light 105's, though I may be mistaken. "Airborne to ya, mates!"
hey what going on there they loading the round then the charge? we load it all at once any difference in doing it ethier way not sure. keen to find out if anyone know will have to ask the lads at the batt too.
@nzsmash L118 has a longer barrel around 37 calibers, uses Charge Super propellant which gives it a minimum range of 17km. M119 is a modified version of the L119 with reliability improvements, which uses the NATO standard semi-fixed rounds, which are put together first, then put into the breech as once piece. M119 has a minimum range of about 14km, or 13.9km with a barrel length of 21 calibers I think. Charge Super round doesn't fit in the propellant canister without sticking out of it.
As the 105 still has a (theoretical) direct fire /anti tank capability with H E A T, is it still layed with an proper optical telescope? I understand that when doing indirect fire it is layed using a computer these days. Technology!!
can indeed fire directly, recently Royal marines dissasembled 1 and hauled it by hand up a mountain to the top and the taliban were very shocked when it started fireing directly down on them with extream accuracy.
Not Being funny, But why do the crew lave the trails? i fired these in the 80s and layer remained seated and we usualy had to do one man loads, you loaded and after fireing ejected the case, preferable to hit the no1, lol, is it a stupid health and safty thing? of different and more powerfull ammo, does it still go to charge 7? not dissing this just procedures must of changed.
105 light gun can be used to take out tanks and anything jst about it can explode from 1 meter of the ground and can explode from 1 meter to 18 meters of the ground i should no im a op in the Royal artillery its one of the best guns can be picked up my heli driven the lot such a easy gun to move and use
well if u r soo ex gunners u would no the first 3 shots r shots for affinciny to find out if the guns still working the safty crap i no coz i am a 105 gunner royal artillery
I tell you why as an exgunner even in the eary 90's we were issued ear defenders as well as a pair of ear plugs but most only used the plugs as eardefenders are cumbersome in a fast response deployment like this, they didn't fit with helmet, which nobody wore either, and then there is the fact that like me I'm 80% deaf in my left ear and not perfect in the right, then lastly add to this putting a gun into action even without the live fire is a loud process.
Besides why wisper we weren't trying to sneek up on the ememy. I think they are playing the antitank role here and the tank can't hear you but the can see so speed and not fuck'n it up is what saves their asses.
I remember some women walking into the company (Battery)area on Easter Sunday, and I was standing behind this gun. I announced I had a boner while cranking this all the way up! Everybody fell out laughing! They were DS Rios' daughter & wife! I told him Tu esposa tienes las tetas mas grandes del mundo. He went yelling for the rest of the Puerto Ricans to stop teaching the white boy Spanish. From then on no more Spanish was spoken at C 1/31FA.Ha ha ha!
A good M109A6 Paladin crew can get off 3 or 4 rounds in 2 minutes. Thats a self propelled howitzer firing a round roughly .33 larger than the 105mm round.
i had a m8 who saw a guy get hit by the recoil of the 105 aparntly its not nice he wldnt say much all i presume the guy was killed but im not 100% certain
it is still a good gun still going strong but no2 of the crew has to lean over the trails not under because for any reason it was to fall it will hurt him as if he went under the trails it will break his arm if not more it just another safty the army brought in
Nice to see the 105mm Light gun still going strong after all these years. As a former TA gunner from the 80s, this was a lovely bit of kit to use, simple to learn and maintain, reliable and great fun to operate. Apart from anti-tank though!
The reason for the jack was because the wheelbase of the Light Gun isn't wide enough to allow the barrel to be traversed from its travelling position to the firing position. The gun has to be lifted, the jack placed under it, the gun lowered, thereby lifting the wheel off the floor. The wheel is removed, the barrel traversed, the wheel replaced & the jack removed.
Although why the No2 on that crew was leaning OVER the trails to do it is beyone me, you just place the jack from underneath.

So is this a field gun for direct fire or a howitzer? I'm not familiar with these guns. Looks like they were doing some direct fire drills.
