Sounds to me like Dave was being facetious here. He didn't want to take a stand (that's just not his type) and named the candidate who had absolutely no chance in hell.

Theres another way to contact Letterman.
Go to CBS dot com, then letterman's page. Then click "feedback" at the very bottom and and send an email to letterman to get ron paul on.
