@JustinTheJMan it does. i cut some good size branches off that were hanging over our house w/ a polesaw, and finished them up w/ my machete. i was surprised by how easily it tore through it all. i plan on making another one like it, but i'm gonna make it a little nicer, and put a wooden handle on it instead of a cord wrap. the cord came off of a set of curtains by the way. :)
Once I visited my uncle in Russia, and when they made tools they sharpened one end of the tool like a nail, punched it into wood and craved a handle. I think it's called a rat-tail tang. You could have done that with your machete.
Other than that, it's not as ugly as the comments made it seem. Machetes are meant to be functional. Not pretty. Wonderful job :)
this is the reason why i m thing about the americans wath i m think about. this is more than scrap! this is horrible. i have never seen such a jackass work like this. and the idea, making a video of it, shows me the how stupid the "makers" are!
its a visiting card for the "yes we can" nation. for what does the J stands in the name??? does it means like JACKASS? go and delete this kind of misery!!! is this the reason why the us buy all there goods from the chinese???? i think this is so!!!!!!!
@nallepuh6969 I highly doubt I'll ever go to Africa but if I do I'll be sure to take this along, getting laughed at definitely wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen.
@nallepuh6969 lol I'm from Africa, This would work...maybe for about a while, then it would probably break. All I can say is I wouldn't want to be near the guy swinging this thing in case the blade flies off the handle and then I'm in the middle of the jungle maybe with a machete blade in me and then I'd quickly stop laughing at the machete haha. That tang looks super dodgy. But it is what it is...an inexpensive home project mostly for shits and giggles I guess, not for serious bush whacking.
@misterchuckle Yea, definitely not for actual use, we have chopped down a few smaller trees and bushes with it but nothing too hardcore. It was one of those "Hey, we got this shit lying around, what can we make?" sort of things and wasn't exactly planned or thought out. I'll be sure to let you guys know if/when I accidentally chop something off of myself with it!
@JaKeth3snake That would be interesting to see. I'd say its pretty obvious we don't have any experience with making knives (I'm good at sharpening mine, that's about it) maybe you could offer some advice instead of just criticizing.
@JustinTheJMan Well first off get some quality steel from texas knife supply (I'd suggest 440c for a machette cuz its easy to sharpen and won't ship). Then go buy a file from your local hardware shop. Thats pretty much all you need to make a quality knife if you take your time. Thats all I had when I made my first knives. As your skill increases you can start to build up a tool/material collection for making knives. Its really a great hobby so good luck and cheers
@JaKeth3snake Well we have loads of different files and I have two different whetstones that I use to sharpen my smaller knives. Thanks for the advice and maybe we'll have another video if we ever get time to make something.
@JaKeth3snake I'm thinking about a carbon steel, probably 1095 or good old german 1.2842. With a good heat treat these steels are pretty much indestructible, and a lot less prone to chipping/breaking than any stainless steel.
wow, you went and turned an old well made blade and turned it into a total, absolutely grotesque, dangerous, crapacular example of how not to make a machete...
That bolt looks like it's galvanized, you need to very ever work with galvanized metal. If you breath in the zinc fumes it can kill you in a matter of hours. Look up the story of Jim "Paw-Paw" Wilson.
Keep on blacksmithing but remember to stay safe and stay alive!
@DustinsReality Hey thanks man, I'll be sure to check that out. Metal working isn't my big thing (still fun) but what you don't know really can hurt you sometimes. Thanks for the warning.
Thats a very dangerous way of putting a handle on a machete. You should always pin fix a machete handle if you like having two legs and intact shin bones.
@MrMilo13 SWEET BABY JESUS or whatever, so I really get to use the Failchete™? I'm definitly telling all of my friends! Wait I don't have any, never mind .(just kiding) Yea, I know what flaming is and I generally don't like it unless it is with good reason, and it sounds like this is justified.
@MrMilo13 Ah yes the valleygirl, I think I heard about that sometime around 4 years ago, think what you must I guess. I like the Failchete, I think you've just named it but too bad you put the ™ on it now I'm not suposed to use it.
Why didn't you just drill a hole in the bottom of the blade, at the kilt (believe it's called) then make a wood handle to wrap around it then, insert a pin into the hole you previously drilled... I really would like to know how the machete holds up in real world test, I'm not a welder but I would guess all welds are 100% perfect. Nice Vid though
Yea thats what I was going to do but there would ave to be two pins to secure it. Well either way its working great except the longer pointed handle likes to rub and gets stuck on sometimes. I used it to chop down a small tree and other such odd things and had I been thinking I would have recorded it and postedit as a follow up, maybe if I get time one of these weekends... Thats awesome and I bet it does have great durability but I;m not that cool and this was just a pos we found sitting around. I originally planed on making a wooden handle but couldn't figure out how it would work. So hows cuba? Thanks for commenting.
i think it is also possible to use file handles, given the fact that files and your blade have rat tail tangs.

@raysteer The handle was made to be removable so we could switch between the two we made.

In Cuba we make the whole thing out of a single steel sheet and then add two pieces of wood to the bottom with rivets.
I would say it gives more durability.
Great vid tho :)
