A common characteristic of school kids, even after a couple of years and some training and practice, is that they just seem to almost timidly honk out the notes with very little awareness of or attention to shaping and clipping and defining the tones.
It's true that a sizable part of good playing is good hearing and listening - even when you're not playing. What makes that great sax player sound great, even (maybe especially) when he's not spitting out lots of fast notes? ... Articulation.
I bought a lot of books written by him to study theory and help me a lot many years ago.Now I can watch him to teach saxophone in video. Very impressive
