I took the idea from the Sonar screensaver but using some other net monitor program (I forgot which) and piped the output to Phosphor and had a nifty net activity monitor as a screensaver :-P
It was a little too much for that old machine, though, so in the end I chose no saver at all.
I got this screensaver for Mac OS X but it does not support the running of a script as input like i see for the gnome (or at least i couldn't get it to). P.S. I run a lot of different operating systems so don't give me any of this Macintosh products are lame etc. I dont give a flying float
I never got around to looking at the kernel, I would give anything to be able to understand the code (I know programming but I don't know how to read something written by another programmer)
can someone tell me why big software companys are not writting for linux?, why don't they start making linux versions of their software and sellling it as they would windows? as soon as this happens im moving to linux, please tell me someone as I have spent 2 hours googling and cant find out, reply to this comment!. thanks in advanced.
Well, the short answer is.. they do. It's just that if Adobe ported Dreamweaver to Linux, it would cost a lot of money, and they wouldn't make much from it (work out why!) But Intel's C++/Fortran compiler (one of the best in the business) exists for Linux, Adobe Acrobat & Flash plugin, many drivers (like nvidia stuff), plenty of scientific software, the game 'Americas Army' among a lot else, are examples of proprietary code that's been ported to Linux.
@sinbadbuddha They can sell it just as they would for Windows you idiot. They money they make from it depends on how many people buy it. Just because the Linux kernel is free doesn't mean Linux ported software has to be.
@ImTheBossTrapJesus I wasn't suggesting that. I just doubted (10 months ago) that Adobe would make enough money from porting Dreamweaver to Linux to justify it because the targeted market would be quite small. Intel's compilers cost money, and I mentioned other proprietary software. I don't quite understand how you managed to read that opinion into what I wrote, but I'm not that big an idiot. Maybe you should read properly before you comment insultingly.
The first screensaver that would make me think :D

@skyphen it also does not support the streaming of mac osx source code...

@hujson77 Yes, I was a dumbass. That comment was from 3 months ago, before I knew much about the kernel. Yuck it up.

Cool idea!

That's not a kernel, that's C code.

@Babkockdood
Congratulations! What do you think, the kernel was wrote in which language? C? Yes? Yes! Nub.

there are several text printing xscreensavers, so you could perhaps use the star wars one
lowtone10 1 year ago
that's just code. xD

Wow! if it prints from top to bottom it would be much like "matrix code"!

The whole point of open source, is that anyone can use it regardless of their "wealth or status" free-as-in-speech or beer.
Knowledge is power, and money guzzling corporations cannot survive in an open source market.
demoflare 2 years ago 22
@demoflare Even open-source companies must make money somehow. Without money, they probably cannot afford to pay the basics, like electricity.

@demoflare
It's free as in speech but not free as in beer. Open source software can be sold.
suyashr2 11 months ago
@suyashr2
Beer can also be sold :P

@demoflare
My point exactly. Therefore, the whole point of open source is that anyone can use it free as in speech but as in beer.
suyashr2 11 months ago
@demoflare LOL beer can be sold too... I agree...
suyashr2 11 months ago
@demoflare It's "free speech, not beer"

@JamesPriceSucks there is free beer
tololololo9001 6 months ago
That would be great but the big software companies are making money from people and Linux is supposed to be free and no cost. This is the reason why.
ekojk1242 2 years ago
@ekojk1242 You are wrong, linux is supposed to be free(Open Source), not necessarily free of cost.
In fact you can sell linux, if you can get away with it, you just have to supply the source code with it .

cool!!!! Where Can I download that?
zicsoft 3 years ago
Cool! I want one! I know how to write one in C, but I have no idea how to get it started... how do you do that? ty
steph16th 4 years ago
Write a shellscript, that picks a random *.c file from the kernel source tree and cats it.
Then configure the xscreensaver module 'Phosphor' to use that script to get its output.
Simple.
