  • oooooooooooh it's so amazing !

  • 2012 and I still love it <3

  • esto es...magia.

  • LOVE the disparate tempos

  • search nicolas and the iceni narrow road. They write beautiful new classical and folk which has echoes of Glass.

  • love it. its so simple but its so pretty

  • 89 people are stupid

  • Philip Glass is now composing the Elena House Trilogy, to be released in March of 2013. Tickets will sell out within minutes, as he is the couple's Best Man, and has sworn that this will be his final Opus prior to retirement.

  • GLASS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MUSIC COMPOSER OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE XX CENTURY.

  • @1987ulise what about Justin Beiber or Britney Spears? Don't count them out just yet :)

  • @1987ulise nope

  • La Racine carrée de nos rêves est aussi sur ma chaîne

  • aff! toca com muito rubato numa abordagem melosa e ultrapassada.

    arruinou a música :(

  • His harmonic structure is very simple and repetitive but his knowledge of rythmic patterns enhances the simplicity. Its sort of droning but in the most pleasant way possible.

  • I just noticed the awesome rhythmic stuff going on in this piece.... its amazing!!! The harmonic structure is no big deal but it IS soothing and familiar nevertheless. The best part about this is surely the complex rhythmic interactions. The unresolved ending is also a plus... leaves you in a state of dreaming.

  • !!!!!!!!

  • is this in a higher key than the original?

  • lol the south park parody was pretty accurrate

  • waooooo! es espectacular escuchar esta pieza

  • Such a powerful woman. Just look at those hands.

  • awesome, truly magical. A masterpiece

  • Simply beautiful!!!

  • @SuperPombear Theories can't be treated as facts because facts and theories are two different things...Just because it has the potential to be a fact does not make it a fact. Theories are labeled as theories because they have not been proven with enough evidence to make them a fact. Saying that a fact is wrong defies everything that a fact is. If it's wrong then it cannot be a fact. Might want to get your facts straight...

  • @gn2189211 There isn't anything in this life that is an actual fact then, because there isn't a definitive answer for anything. Just ask a physicist ^^

  • This is atonical music people, this has nothing to do with Mozart.

  • pppppffffft i could play this in my sleep!.........on my ipod

  • i just wish i could play the piano like that

  • This didn't move me. It's that simple. My favorite new artist and composer for piano is Morgan Olk. Enjoy.

  • I have heard people say: I could have painted that or I could have played that music or I could have caught that football or I could of or I could of; well then you should of but you didn't so shut up and enjoy what is around you.

  • I'm so happy that I don't know enough of piano compositions to be moved to criticism by this piece, but instead to tears.

  • @cjbetzair Totally agree. Music is not about logical or intellectual knowledge, but about pure feeling and consciousness.

  • @cjbetzair youre lucky

  • Bach's prelude in C is really easy. Any1 up to saying he is a shitty composer?

  • Sublime

  • A nice performance _ was wondering though why can I not find this performed by Philip Glass on YouTube? Just seems very strange. I saw him in concert in the 80s. Its was a small theater in the lower Florida Keys so my seat was at most 15 feet away. My favorite that night was Facades. But - he must be hear somewhere? Thanks for posting

  • ...esta rola es un delicia...que me la toquen cuando me muera!!!

  • This is a complete joke Most people could play this

  • @rickydelasota obvious troll is obvious

  • @rickydelasota Good music is not about difficulty.

  • @Suitecake Thats what I came to say

  • If opinion's didn't exist, and people could only use facts... nobody would ever be wrong. Less bullshit spewing from people's mouthes and into my ears essentially. Opinion's are things that are not true, or have yet to be proved true, because they are not facts, because if they were facts... they wouldn't be opinions. Basically meaning opinions are worthless because they have no proof, or there's no rules that it has to contain any proof. Quite obvious if your not retarded really...

  • @13Hunched31 Then is it your policy in life to ignore things like feelings, love, pleasure, dreams, art? all we have for these things are opinions, and opinions are so much fun and not at all worthless. like for example: this is the best video on youtube. you sound like the type of guy that gets dumped by girls a lot. just saying...

  • @13Hunched31 Everything in this world which makes it worthwhile is a matter of opinion. The facts of your birth and death are irrelevant. What matters is what you decide to value during the brief time you're here.

  • Opinion's have no "pull" or "weight" to them... Somebody can be like, "well that's my opinion". Yes, and opinions are stupid... It's for people to use who don't believe the facts... See, a fact can't be an opinion. I can't have an opinion that 2+2 is 4, it's not my choice, that's how it is... But some people think they get to decide what is true and what is not, like religion and Santa Claus. The best opinion is just as equal as the worst... because apparently they're all equal.. no rules...

  • She plays it so well i started crying. Perfect!

  • At 0:45 she releases the piano so amazing! The way Glass ignores the tempo is just unique! I was lucky to see him this summer

  • у бабана минус спиздил

  • @nuttkasekillah главное, текст не изменил. А то оксана обидится.

  • listen to that song in school (:

  • o.0 aswome

  • Just perfect, a genious of the modernism, but still... Not as good as John Cage ;)

  • awsome

  • Awesome. Simply perfectly played, with the same feelings the original has. Congrats! :)

  • Opinions are useless as there isn't limit to how ridiculous they can be.

Example: I believe the universe is made of out spaghetti, this is my opinion.

That is a valid opinion, because there are no rules when you form an opinion.

This is why smart people use facts, and aren't religious... because of facts...

This is "common" sense... Basically, your opinion is as trivial as my spaghetti universe theory, so realize how stupid you possibly look and stfu. okthxbai

  • @13Hunched31 "This is why smart people use facts, and aren't religious", you just lost me there sir. You are, trully a genious.

  • @SundayBreakers Lol... I get pissed off at people who think their entitled to their own opinion, which they are... but when they do that they feel justified and feel they are right no matter what, it's bullshit. My point was there's no such thing as a "wrong" opinion, according to everyone today... Basically anything can be an opinion, there are no rules, it can be as stupid as ever... but it's still a "valid" opinion, because nobody can say it;s wrong, because your entitled to it.

  • @13Hunched31 you sound like you're 8...that's my opinion

  • @13Hunched31 I will tell you a fact; facts can be wrong. Theories once thought as correct have been proven wrong by further research. Facts can also be expanded with additional research -- the big bang theory is constantly being added to. The most important thing to remember, however, is that all facts start with a theory; an opinion. It is evidence that makes opinion a fact.

In that case, doesn't every theory have the potential to be fact, and therefore every theory should be treated as such?

  • @SuperPombear

There are many "facts" that aren't too 100% certainty, many things we call facts are actually just strongly believed theories (which would be things such as leeches used in the 1600's for medical purposes, it was a theory they became so heavily believed people used it as fact, which was incorrect of them, and technically never an actual fact, they mislabeled what it actually was)

  • @13Hunched31 You like typing, don't you? I am completely lost with what you are saying so I will ask you this again in hope of getting a -- preferably -- coherent answer:

Doesn't every theory have the potential to be fact, and therefore shouldn't every theory should be treated as such?

  • There isn't a department that decides what is truly fact and what isn't, which is why there ends up being facts that aren't actually true, an oxymoron i think. There's also a thing called "foundationalism" which creates some of these problems. I wasn't meaning to get too scientific, just more along people's idiotic basic beliefs, and the basic facts that prove them wrong. There is more skepticism among complicated facts. 1+1=2, is basic, no skeptics questioning this.

  • @SuperPombear Just opinions like "ghosts are real" make me laugh. How do you know their real? You watched a fucking stupid reality show with ghosts LOL? You heard some fake scientist on your television talking about them? Go ask someone like Stephen Hawking if ghosts are real and he'll probably say something like "Is the earth flat?".

  • @13Hunched31 stop flame

  • Musician of time.

  • so fucking romantic. and i love it....

  • Grazie Philip, grazie.....

  • bravooooo

  • So I accidentally opened this video twice and didn't even notice. It was still beautiful.

  • Brilliant!

  • Word

  • I thinking about piano lessons? How n#much time it will take to play like her ?

  • @85Damix Google "Ira Glass" and "Taste Quote"

  • @85Damix A lifetime.

  • @Lecrie really ?

  • @85Damix To play a piano like this, I believe, doesn't require only simple buttonpresses. It requires mature emotion. Very few have the kind of talent to bring so much emotion and keep it alive without a lot of practice. To gain this kind of mindset isn't easy.

  • @85Damix Depends on whether you've had any musical background before (ie, played any other instruments, sang), but all in all it's very variable. I've had about three years tuition and then six years self-learning, and I reckon I could learn this in about a week, but then take between one and two months to perfect conveying all the emotions in it as well as adding my own style. So a lifetime? No. A long time? Yes.

  • thumbs up if simpsons brought you here

  • @michal23pl

I dissent. There is a possibility for mankind to find peace with himself and with others, we just need the right approach and time. You will find that certain societies, like those of Buddhist Monks (barring the self-immolation which are not fighting with anyone else) find peace in their lives and manage to live harmoniously, while Americans decide to bomb the shit out of Iraq. Clearly there are certain society types that are conducive to peace-those are the ones that we should seek.

  • @BarbierNicholas i dissent too :) Buddhist Monks may live in spiritual peace individually but they struggling to balance all opposites of the entire universe in a daily basis the same as we all do! and, by the example of USA vs. Iraq, they have been struggling with China for decades so they have to fight back as well including monks! you have really need to do some research about what's happening in Tibet:/

  • @BandMan6100

Subjective and true can go together--but only if you are making an objective statement about someone's subjectivity. When someone claims that Bartok>Glass, they mean not to say that Bartok IS absolutely (and truly) better than Glass--instead they mean that they subjectively perceive Bartok to be better and that in itself is (though not verifiably) an objectively true self report about the nature of one's own subjective experience while listening to music.

  • @BarbierNicholas and how can we objectively verify your statement oh pseudo- wittgenstein? If you read your statement again you've already shot yourself in the foot...have a nice day hopping in circles.

  • @parannoyance Just because something can't be verified doesn't mean that it isn't true--I guess our disagreement comes down to a difference between belief--I am a realist and not a verificationist. They are fundamental differences in interpretation that cannot be reconciled through rational thought--they are based on different metaphysical beliefs. All that I can say (if you believe in other minds and are not a solipsist) is that is that minds are, by definition, private. They still exist though

  • I just want to cry now, that's all.

  • guys stop trying to talk smart.. mozarts music is awesome bach is amazing and philip glass is wonderful they blow my mind and the same to you

  • Mistake, on like the 5th note

  • @Zetrenix

    LOL

  • Lovely

  • go find a window and look out while listening to this song. what do you see? how do you feel? where are we all going? these are the important questions.

  • i heard him in tech ed and was in love at first sight, er... listen?

  • there is so much beauty let into the world, including music yet nobody listens.

  • This music is like " we are so screw!".

  • i thought it was a man philip glass hes wearing a dress, lovely music all the same

  • @SuperEverton1974 haha :D

  • what i feel here is an expression of how shallow, empty and superficial life can be.

  • this melody is like the running time

  • The 79 dislikers don't know how reassuring the music is :)

  • i like how these deep and meaningful people comment on a youtube video...it really shows you how sophisticated one can be...

  • Contemporary composer Philip Glass explains what can always kill a show. Read more at The Worst Gig (WorstGig.com).

  • a masterpiece, overwhelmingly beautiful and has been my favourite song for many years

  • @Ursulocrow *nor

  • @Doriaismygrandma Thanks :)

  • wow beautiful ! i cant speak.

  • Gorgeous!!!! I love this song!!! Thanks for posting it!!! Many greetings from Brazil!! Luiz Cláudio.

  • are there any compareable pieces to this one? ive heard a lot of other songs by philip glass but this "only piano" is the one i like the most, so im asking if there are any others where is "only piano"

  • @solarmarlon There are quite a few... I don't know how you could have listened to other Glass stuff and not come across any of his other piano works.

Metamorphosis 1-5, Mad Rush, The Hours, to name several.

  • @mrbassooner1

    thanks man

  • The unbelievable complexity of this piece rivals some of Bach's greatest fugues. Only a genius can craft something as phenomenally intricate as this masterpiece.

  • @HerlockSholmes123 hahahaha

  • if you love this piece, you might like my latest composition. Search "Ballade of the stars" and click first video. I hope it moves you in some way

  • I feel like everyone who is arguing about hierarchy in music and who is a musician should "listen" to some John Cage and then ask questions about music. On another note, Philip Glass is the best effing piano composer. So much emotion

  • i think i just became a philip glass fan

  • Breathtaking.

  • the Piano. My fave Classical "Instrument" which above all others is best at conveying emotion IMO. And Ms Branka Parlic sublime divine playing of another great piece by genius Mr Philip Glass is a shining example of emotive beauty. Listening to music pieces like this makes me thank God I have my hearing.

  • Thank you for posting this, modernquartet.

Glass is a tower of achievement in composition and performance, and Branka Parlić does Glassworks full justice on her piano.

You’ve inspired me to upload Ann Southam’s Glass Houses Revisited, which I’ve sent as a video response to Glassworks :)

  • He plays the piano.

  • Oh... that´s absolutely wonderful.. I feel so happy when I hear it !!

  • You know, when you have triplets on right hand and normal chromes on the left one for more than five beats, it becomes more and more difficult to mantain the right tempo.. This is also the cause we love Glassworks... triplets and chromes create a magical atmosphere..

  • Uuh the rhythm..it makes this piece so beautoful

  • Pseudo modernist trash, I find the intricate endoscopic spacialism of Karlheinz Stockhausen to superior, Glass simply isn't valid.

  • @ShinjiKoon i disagre. i believe his music has more of an impact, even when only used as backgroud sound

  • @ShinjiKoon Looking forward to hearing your compositions.

  • @ShinjiKoon I hope you choke on your pretension or your dark turtleneck- whatever gets you first.

  • @Bebkins Best comment I have ever read. Thank you for putting it into the world.

  • @ShinjiKoon "Pseudo modernist trash"

You don't know what modernism is, do you?

I'll give you a clue, it's not that modern anymore.

  • @ShinjiKoon what do you mean by 'isn't valid'?

  • @ShinjiKoon There's no "superior" musician neither "superior" artist in the world.

ART is Not a Competition neither a Hierarchy system.

It is as simple as if you like something or not.

As simple as something interests you or not.

As simple as you feel it or not.

    Cheers.

  • @Ursulocrow /discussion.

  • @Ursulocrow

Well you have some sicko composers like Mozart who wrote a industrial quantity of high quality work. And then you have pop music's one hit wonders.

There is a hierarchy system, at least my senses tend to think so.

  • @BlunderCity - And I am curious to ask, who would the ruling body be in this hierarchy of yours?

  • @RustyRazor2010

    Good taste!

  • @Ursulocrow Well said, my friend. There's no right way of playing, you just have to convince the audience (and yourself) of your interpretation :)

  • @Ursulocrow perfect man

  • @Ursulocrow although I must say, we should differentiate between a musician and a non musician

  • @molitatron Although I must Say. We are all Musicians, because Music is a Human form of expression. And being Humans, we all feel, Everything we may express is Art.

It doesn't matter if it's profitable or non-profitable Art, It doesn't matter if it's Commercial or non commercial Art. It's Just Art. We may, nevertheless, differentiate between musicians formed in an Academy and those who just make music because they feel it. Anyways, there's no much difference, Music is music, art is art.

  • @Ursulocrow -"We may, nevertheless, differentiate between musicians formed in an Academy and those who just make music because they feel it." There are those who dont feel music, with or without musical knowledge. Just because I see, am I a painter?

  • @molitatron No. Just because you see, you are a viewer.

  • @Ursulocrow yeah there is

  • @Ursulocrow CONSPIRACY!!!!!11!!!!11!!!!!

  • @Ursulocrow really like you comment. I tried to explain this to some musicians that dont like others because there are "others who are better". I should use your answer as an axplanation for them.

  • @Ursulocrow

I love Glass...and I think you were trying to defend him. I do think though that distinctions can be made in art at least as much as in other areas of human life. In the end to say, "Philip Glass's music is superior to that of Wu-Tang Clan", might be subjective, but also true.

The idea that human life has value is ultimately subjective...so are we then going to say if you don't believe that you can kill someone?

My point: You CAN decide good vs. bad music. Glass=good.

  • @BandMan6100 you can't say Phillip Glass is better than Wu-Tang because they're totally completely different than one another. That's like saying the Yankees are better than the Giants. Just because they are in the same town (or just because they both make music) doesn't mean they are comparable.

Both Phillip Glass and Wu Tang Clan revolutionized the style of music they made and both are amazingly talented people (or group of people in Wu Tang Clan's case) but they're apples and oranges

  • @ap1027 Interesting...I cannot say it, yet I did....

  • @ap1027 I don't believe that because things are in different genres they cannot be compared. I do not believe that one cannot be claimed as superior to another. Where is the foundation for that belief?

A totalitarian dictatorship and a republic are two vary different forms of gov't. Therefore, according to you I cannot compare them, they are apples and oranges....who can say one is better than another?

The choice is up to you, I discern and back it up with philosophy.

  • @BandMan6100 While you may prefer Glass to Wu Tang that does not mean he is better. You're right with the government analogy. In my opinion you cannot say which is better. You can say which one you PREFER but that does not make it a universal truth. Just like you can't say Christianity is a better religion than Buddhism. While you may prefer one, but that doesn't make it better for everyone.

What I'm trying to say in short is personal preference or opinion =/= better

  • @ap1027 I greatly appreciate that you can talk intelligently, which is rare on youtube.

I don't believe I ever said everyone has to agree with me. What I was originally posting against was the idea that people are for some reason not able to have firm opinions about art and culture. We can, and the idea that we cannot is undemocratic.

I have a mind, I am educated, I use this mind and my education to make opinions. I have a right to them. I can say Philip Glass > Wu-Tang Clan.

  • @BandMan6100 As I appreciate yours. And you didn't say that, but you said ""Philip Glass's music is superior to that of Wu-Tang Clan", might be subjective, but also true." The part of that statement that particularly concerns me and my argument is where you say "might be subjective, but also true."

  • @ap1027 So subjective and true cannot go together? That is not how I view subjective. Subjective is ones thoughts on something as opposed to the thing itself. Nothing about truth is in the definition.

  • @BandMan6100 The definition of subjective is "Based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions". If you've ever studied philosophy or logic (which I assume you have) then you know that one of the first things you learn about proving absolute truth is that it must be true for all people.

  • @BandMan6100 What I've been trying to say, in a roundabout way, is that your statement is subjective and is not universally true. I can say that Stravinsky > Glass and I do believe that Stravinsky is better than Glass, but that doesn't mean it is completely true. It's subjective. And that is the definition of of subjective.

  • I want this piece to be played the day humankind finally unites and declares everlasting world peace.

  • @Arrowbolt the day the world unites is the day we lose privacy and the constitutional rights inherent in America's constitutions. Concepts such as freedom of religion, press, and purposeful fulfillment (ART) will be at the mercy of national governments. just look at Nicolae Carpathia...

  • @Arrowbolt that's a beautiful thing to say.

  • @Arrowbolt if the Amercians have anything to do with it, it will be an commercial jingle

  • @Arrowbolt Word. It's just sad that will never happen while i am alive.

  • @Arrowbolt Good luck with that;)

  • @Arrowbolt Everylasting world peace is never going to happen. It would be great, but it will never happen.

  • @Arrowbolt everlasting peace is an abstraction because life is the result of the struggle between dynamic opposites. however I still appreciate your positive attitude.

  • @michal23pl that's cute, pseudo intellect boy.

  • @michal23pl Logic cannot comprehend everlasting peace, that doesn't mean it isn't an actual physical thing.

  • @michal23pl

What dynamic opposites are you struggling with oh dialectical one? I'm struggling with codswallop and cockwash.

As for Buddhist monks I don't hear many screaming babies in the monastry.Locking yourself away isn't exactly engaging with this world is it?

When I see monks in Wall street demonstrating about the corruption i'll bow to the meditative power of realisation until then hand me the nappy,my baby just pooped again.
