Could someone pleeease tell me the name of the reggae sounding drums just to his left of the hi-hat?? I really want to get some but i don't know what they are called :l the two that he plays loads at 6:21. Cheers Guys :)
Yep I liked the way he uses all the of the drum to change the pitch slightly and letting some of the drums / cymbals resonate. Very well done. I wish I could do any semblance of something that complicated.
you´re damn right...he´s really good in some way; but he should stop to play the f***ing drum-wizard.mike,go into a chinese restaurant and do the background percussionist or play some really cool stuff without trying to pretend the monumentalist!!
one of the best, and most underrated drummers on the planet - fellow drummers should all appreciate how much harder this is than just hitting random toms at a billion miles an hour...
Blows the likes of Mike Portnoy and Bozzio to pieces...even if Bozzio did influence this solo - he is out-done by Mike here..
Finally, someone who also appreciates these kinds of solos. These kinds of percussion beats require alot more thought that the "billion mile/hr." solos.
I love how he mutes the drum with his elbow to make the pitch wobble (:
Loved the solo, although he could've made the beginning a bit more 'filling' so to speak. However he seems to be one of their best drummers. He really knows how to improvise with all the extra drums and cymbals. For a bit of the solo it sounded as if you were being chased in a Jungle.
This solo is extremely random. Especially in the beginning. It seems like he just randomly throws down random notes on random blocks and bells on his kit.
i hate people who solo like this. it is really just like someone who is banging on the drums not really playing.

Wow. He's telling a story with his kit! This is the best thing I've seen in a long time.

@SacccyBoy They're just small timbales. I'm not sure about the brand but Remo Roto-toms are similar. You should try those.

He's everything a drummer should be. Dynamic, precise, fluid in motion, and well dressed (digging the shoes Mike)

@metalmike83 really? molesting the woodblock to pieces out-does bozzio? this dude is good and all, but way too gay for a drum solo

I think it's something similar probably a Sabian Alu-/Ice- bell. Also have you ever seen these guys use anything but sabian?

no. i personally prefer zildjian. i have z custom

Awesome! The drum solo bit at 3:21 onwards sounded like something a concert band does in a tense part of a movie.

How to make a drum solo sound like it's not coming from a drum kit :O
simonpca 2 years ago
I liked it a lot: really different from the other Mike's solos. Also, I think it's quite technical and musical (specially from 3:50 to 5:50).
Final part playing an extremelly fast double-pedal it's just amazing.

I think that part is very musical. Not only has taste but it's also very "smart". Some interesting melodies going on there.

I agree. If the solo was an insect, I would call it "the dragonfly flight".
