  • Amazing!!!

  • This is almost as good at being at an ELP concert! I cant tell you how many times ive watched this video and im blown away every time.. I play music for a living. These kids oughta quit school and go on the road! hahaha I LOVE it!

  • For a year, I had a HS band director who was a big ELP fan, but we played 5 minutes of the 35-min Pictures at an Exhibition. Would have loved to have played this! Never would have imagined this was possible. But it depends on the bubbly keyboard intro and electric guitar. I think, imho, the singer and drumset player are stiff. Btw, he only lasted a year because till then band was an easy credit, but he wanted students to actually work. Imagine that. Thanks for posting, I'm out of room.

  • Great. What a great musical education.

  • If I was at the show, I woulda yelled out "HOLY SHIT!"

  • Could you possibly make a higher-quality version available on Megaupload, Rapidshare, or the like? This is amazing. I first watched this a couple years ago and keep coming back to it.

  • TY for those who enjoyed it, makes those 7AM practices feel worth it seeing as it has made those enjoy the performance

  • Dedicated to the memory of Ms. Lilla Young, music teacher at West Pictou District High School! Pictou County Nova Scotia! 1970's, I loved you Ms. Young, and you did your best to "cast pearls, before swine" Roy Munro.

  • Of all the videos I have seen on YouTube, this has to be one of the most amazing ones I have seen or heard! An outstanding job

  • OMG! ...where to begin?...just toying with the notion of even ATTEMPTING to play this piece staggers the mind! ...You guys did such a great job! I can't watch this without shedding a tear!

  • I loved playing in this ensemble. I played trumpet in this!!!!!!!!!!! Too bad this was the percussion directors last year. He got fired for a terrible rating in state marching contest, now he is turning the McKinney Schools around...Eff You Colson!!!!!!!! Mr. Myers, the best director ever, thank you for playing the song we all loved to play in the stands on friday nights and allowing me to play as apart of the ensemble

  • This is awesome. We had a cool director when I was in high school band 35 years ago. He introduced me to ELP, Pictures at an Exhibition. We played a piece from Rick Wakeman's Six Wives of Henry the VIII in band.

  • Unbelievable! That just so totally rocks- what an amazing performance!

  • Perfect arrangement, absolutely note perfect. 2:17 - 3:20 is one of my favorite bits of all time and this just makes it Zappa-esque...

  • Would any of you like to hear her imitate the climaxing synth outro from the 3rd Impression which sounds like "Bee-poo-bee-bee-boo-poo-bah-pah..."?

  • Nice job. The kid's got a great voice. The music is spot on. The band director's got the balls to play it with the lyrics intact. This stuff is over 30 years old and young people still get it. Thanks.

  • absolutely great! Congratulations for this!

  • His synthesizer could've gone much higher in pitch at the finale.

  • Did they do part 3 of this song with the futuristic-sounding synthesizer ending? You know, the part that contains such lines as "Negative! Primitive! Limited!"?

  • This performance is very impressive considering these are high school kids. They did that music justice.

  • pity about the sound i need it on vinyl !

  • "Soon the gypsy queen in a glaze of Vaseline will perform on guillotine, what a scene, what a scene."

  • @Cruz08erZ

Some "3rd Impression" lyrics I'd like to hear her do:

"No computer stands in my way/Only blood can cancel my pain/Guardians of a new clear dawn/Let the maps of war be drawn."

  • Insane!.. and give the singer credit - that's a very tough vocal.

  • Absolutely brilliant! Bravo!

  • I love it - and am surprised that some of the lyrics made it past the HS censors

    See the Gypsy Queen...

  • not bad for a high school band

  • when i went to Poteet atleast 80% were potheads...

  • Back when I was in high school some of the best musicians were potheads - lol!

  • Really great!

  • I would like to see this band perform the 3rd impression also. KUDOS!!!!!!!

  • is this the poteet by san antonio?

arent yall like 1A or something?

  • Its Poteet High School in Mesquite, TX. The school is 4A.

  • Absolutely incredible. I've never heard a high school band that good before.

  • I saw ELP 12 times and I can tell you that you would make Keith, Greg and Carl PROUD. BEST EVER HIGH SCHOOL BAND IN HISTORY. I've got chills. This is the music of my youth and my life still to this day!!! Bravo!!!

  • Best high school band ever!

  • Ok, the performance is not perfect, but I still enjoyed it very, very much. Nice job, kids. Best compliments. Thank you for sharing this.

  • Damn good! How bout some Pirates next? eh?

  • Holy Shit, how id kill to be a part of THAT high school band performance. id ditch my band class for that! ELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OH MY GOD I EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH THIS

  • I just listened to this again for the third time. It's .. beautiful, man!

  • Nailed the organ solo, my high school band would crash and burn, we are so incompetent. I would die to do something like this in high school.

  • Im a e.l.p. fan and that gave me goose bumps, good job

  • nice ritard in the begging!! i like how yall slowed down like 20 beats. poteet i hope yall all know your terrible sports.

  • A High School band? WOW! The conductor must be an ELP fan. The kids do a really good job, but the vocalist has a weak voice. Pretty good rendition. I love the marimbas! Kudos kids!!

  • I have been a hard ELP fan since I first heard them in the early 70s but this blew me away. You see, I grew up in Mesquite, TX in the 60s-70s and graduated from Mesquite H. S. in 77. God! Mesquite has come a long way in 30 years.

  • UNBELIEVEABLE!!! I've been a loyal ELP fan since Tarkus was first released. These amazing kids NAILED IT!!! Back in my High School, NO ONE ever got a standing ovation. ROCK ON!!!

  • The only thing cooler than seeing this particular section of KE9 performed in its entirety was seeing the audience go ape-shyte at the end of it--high schoolers who appreciate Emerson, Lake & Palmer--fantastic! Incidentally, I'm glad whoever filmed this finally took a few moments to zero in on the synth player...he was great. My highest kudos and congratulations for this band & its conductor!

  • Loved it!

  • A continuation of the fantastic performance from part 1. I'm giddy and speechless. Awesome.

  • I have never seen a high school group do something as impressive as this one. I salute those who put the group together, and the performers, too. Bravo!

  • STFU....these kids did a great job. Open that closed little mind of yours & show some appreciation for a high school band that worked hard to present this.

  • Who was the singer

  • I like how the division between parts 1 and 2 are at the same place where I used to have to turn the LP over.

This performance could have been a little bit better if they had the keyboardist do a few flips in the air has he was playing. :)

  • Oh my god. Couldn't be cooler!

  • if you want to see something done completely by the students, check out check Benicia High School Percussion Ensemble 07-08. they did a sick cover on dream theaters "home". we are the best drumline in california right now, so check us out

  • OH MY GOD. Really, this is one frigging amazing performance. And I like the singer...anyways, my god these kids are like super-extra-achievers...to do a song this daring and complex, and not just perform it note for note perfectly but with real rock vigor...a percussion ensemble (w/keys, guitar and horns, though, I see)...anyways...

  • Way way nice. Not what i expected when i veiwed this. almost knocked me over. BRAVO! The vocals were good also.

  • Awesome song bad sigger

  • wow pretty good

  • nicely*

  • jeeez that's wicked. niely done

  • I find it amazing that they even permitted the lyrics to this song to be sung -- they are practically pornographic.

  • I think it's outstanding that they DIDN'T censor, edit, or leave out the full lyrics to this piece, one of the greatest acheivements in music & lyrics compositions ever created.

  • As was pointed out in the comments for the "First Impression" video, they did omit the part about "pull Jesus from our hat". Apparently "seven virgins and a mule" is acceptable, but funning with Jebus ain't. At least, not in the part of the US where this wonderful band plays.

  • Regarding the Jesus lyric, I am sure the lyric was removed as much over the fear of complaints from "separation of church and state" liberals as from the "religious right". So it's likely not fair to jump to the conclusion that it was removed solely to placate Christians. (Especially so, given that the school is progressive enough to allow a performance of music that I could only play at home in the 70s AFTER performing "Take the A Train" and "Begin the Beguin" in my high school jazz band.)

  • Thank you!

This is the High School musical program of my dreams! I congrat Mike Myers for his obvious and great musical ability and also for his initiative of bringing such great music to young people! I wish there was a commercial record of that!

  • Remarkable performance of great music by great young players! Keep up the great work! Keith would be proud!

  • The next time our local school band comes marching by, performing their butchered renditions of Beach Boys songs and trampling our lawn, maybe I'll invite them in to watch these videos. Could they borrow Mr. Myers for a week?

  • Weak part is the singer. Especially the cheesy hand move at the start.

  • I agree that she is the weakest part, mostly because her voice is not rough enough for the song. It needs to be a little more hoarse. That is not her fault, it's just the nature that you are used to hearing the song performed as.

Congrats to the ensemble though, tough chart well performed! Keep it up, perhaps perform Pictures at an Exhibition by ELP???

  • @compsolut

    Or maybe Tarkus?

  • Fantastic!!!!! I've never heard ANYONE cover this tune. Bravo!!!! Very well done!!! Those kids have a GREAT future in music!

  • i never thought id see a high school play an emerson lake and plamer song what the hell

  • Ha, that is awesome. Whoever sang, you have an awesome voice, lady.

  • @MKDS

Only question, where IS she now? And did she ever meet Keith Emerson backstage at one of his concerts?

  • nice to see percussion players subdivde

  • This is absolutely fantastic! Great job, all of you, especially whoever transcribed and arranged the music. Wow!

  • I hope the students in this fantastic video check the comments here. Brain Salad came out when I was their age, and the "needle" on the "record player" just about removed every impression on the "vinyl" from so many plays! From someone who lived, ate, and breathed ELP for so many years, THANK YOU to each and every one of you for all your hard work and this amazing performance! The applause from the audience on this video is but a microscopic sampling of the applause you have generated worldwide!

  • This definitely does justice to the original version.

  • There is no superlative that would be appropriate for this!

  • Like I said, incredible!!!!!

  • Ladies and gentlemen let me introduce Poteet higschool this band overall has won state in texas twice in a row working on three and has won it three times they put out the most regional students and some national there orchestra has'nt found a match.

  • Keith Greg and Carl would be proud.

  • That was amazing. I'm a big ELP fan and i thought you guys did that song perfectly

  • This is astounding. These guys should take the show on tour!

  • This makes me want to move to Texas so my kids can study with this great teacher! I am stunned!! Well done!!

  • I cannot say enough great things about these kid's and the teacher. I would pay good money to see this! everyone here on you tube lets strive to get them on the J-Leno show. this is what makes America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this made me cry tears of happiness and sorrow. happiness for the amazing preformance, sorrow that because of greed and corruption in our goverment many kid's will never experiance this. It's time for we the people not we the goverment! standing ovation!! get them on J-leno show

  • I would come and see this show.

  • Amazing.

    Congrats to students and staff.

  • Fantastic man! How about doing Trilogy and Tarkus. Kudos to the teacher man too!

  • Standing ovation from me!!

  • Fantastic!!

  • The singer sang it better than Greg Lake ever did! :^) (To be fair, it was kinda low for her) But, Keith's solo transcribed for mallets - priceless!

  • Just as good at (part 1).

Young people and your teacher and all involved - please take a bow. These 2 videos deserve to be immortalised on YouTube.

When are you releasing the CD/DVD? :-) And did the music teacher ever envisage the remainder of KE9?

  • Hear, hear!! Let's hear it for a generation (or two) later who is reinterpreting and rediscovering the work of ELP . I think they did a great job.

  • Absolutely FANTASTIC!

The kids have brought a masterpiece back to life!

Excellent work of the director, and praises to the hard work of these kids!

    I'm still gazing in awe!

  • Pat Two also !!! Wish Keith could see this. The kids on the vibes or xzlyphones are fun to watch.

  • Simply shattering!

What an amazing and stunningly powerful rendition of this ELP classic.

These high school students have outdone the original creators of this piece.

    Great job there kids.

  • As a long time fan who's seen ELP 6 times, all I can say is this is quite a breathtaking piece of work....by freaking high school students no less!!!! And, they treat this incredible masterpiece with the respect it deserves!! Great show kids!!

  • SweetRaf said "The singer wasn't appropriate for the song, though."

I disagree. She sang it with great passion and growled and she can certainly rock! It was a tremendous team effort and they all did great, and I thought she EASILY came through.

  • Wonderful!! I cannot beleive that a group of highschool students pulled this off. Being a keyboard player myself and having made various attempts through the years to play this piece in a band and always scrapping it, I am so thoroughly impressed.

Kudos to the Director for his courage and the students for their obvious wealth of talent! Bravo!!

  • Keith, do you YouTube?

  • The drummer is impressive. The entire sync is amazing. The singer wasn't appropriate for the song, though.

  • It's incredible!! Outstanding performance! I'm a music teacher myself, and I would sell my mom in order to get students like these on this video!

Congratulations to your instructor / conductor!!!! These comment is of course valid for both Karn Evil Parts.

  • My high school's marching band is performing this song.

It sure doesn't sound as good as this, though.

  • UNREAL!! You should put out a DVD with the major prog hits of the 70's. I would love to hear your rendition of "Close To The Edge", "Supper's Ready", "Thick As A Brick", "Sound Chaser", etc. It would be a great way to raise $ for your school and turn the youth on to some real meaty music. I would easily pay $100 for a copy!! YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!!

  • Absolutely full marks to all that put this together, fabulous performances all round, I was at school myself when this was first released, yes i am that old!

  • I just hope that somehow this makes its way to Keith Emerson. I'm sure he'd be thrilled to see it.

Prog heads invading high school music programs -- vengeance is ours! Mu ah ah ahhh!!!!

  • Revenge of the nerds IRL!

    Whoot!

  • I said this for Part 1, and I'll say it again: I am speechless. This is brilliant. I saw E.L.P. many times in the early 70s and this performance is actually as good as theirs. And its substantially more difficult to coordinate with all the musicians and instruments. It comes together just about perfectly and the sound of the percussion is even better than the original synthisized Keith Emerson sound. The conductor should get a Grammy for what he has done. Is this really a high school?

  • i Would gladly pay to see these talented people, excellent adaptation.Well done everyone involved!

  • I had tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat watching this. Please pass on my congratulations and heartfelt admiration to Mr Myers for a fantastic arrangement, and to all the musicians for such a great performance. I envy you guys so much. God bless!

  • My wife came in and ask why I was all teared up! And like you, my throat wouldn't work. You just can't explain what a great treat it is for a 54 year old ELP fan to hear these great kids doing such a wonderful job with this great song. That girl has a great set of pipes. Considering how this recording was probably made, this is amazing

  • toadabc, I had the same reaction to this video..reduced to tears listening to these talented young musicians pull this off. Like you, I am a ELP fan, and I was of the same age as these students trying to pull this stuff off when it first came out. I am thoroughly impressed, and sniffling!

  • great performance, arrangement, achievement! really, you guys should be proud, and I mean the entire district program, the kids, the director...... WAY TO GO!

  • lol, these kids probably never heard of elp - I graduated in '85 and nobody in my school listened to elp (except me) - they do a great job here, but I bet they were like "why cant we play something cool..."

  • I beg to differ! I'm in my last year of high school and I think ELP is awesome. And I have several friends who like them, too.

  • LOL I "discovered" ELP my senior year of high school after reading an article in Parade magazine (they used to have one article a month that covered a classic band from the past) - I couldn't get my friends into it though, they preferred VH and Def L and for "classic" rock they liked Zeppelin and Floyd, but they laughed at me when I popped Brain Salad Surgery in the tape deck and yelled "change that (crap)"

  • Lordy am I old! Great performance. Sheesh- all I ever did in high school was smoke dope and chase girls.

  • nice

  • Bravo!!! I would never ever have expected a High School production of this quality. I've played keyboards in ELP cover bands (done this very song even) and I know about as well as anyone can how great an achievement this is. Major cudos to Mr. Myers for having the guts to attempt it and the talent to pull it off.

  • High school band ? Remarkable !

  • Angels all.

  • Fantastic!!! What a progressive band... and teacher! I wish my H.S. band had been like that... 30-some-odd years ago... when ELP released Karn Evil 9. I'd let 'em use my two monster modulars... IF I could play with 'em!

    ~Morbius001~

  • BRAVO!!!!!

  • These kids are living my high school dream.

    Absolutely fantastic!!

  • I would say the same thing except that I was finished with high school before this song came out :( I want to play bass for them!

  • Great...perfect performance.

  • UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!
