With the fight almost over, Corrales would have to knock down/out Castillo in order to win. He believed he could pull it off since Castillo was too aggressive to block counters. Corrales risked spitting, took the point deduction, and then whooped Castillo like he know he would. Strategy.

I was one of the 5,100 at the fight and the last few rounds the crowd roared with every punch landed, it sound like therr was at least 20,000 in that arena, it was unbelievable and ill never forget it... I was surrounded by castillo fans and when I saw jlc ass slump on the rope I ran down the stairs of the aisle screaming as loud as I could, I looked like a nut, but didnt give a fuck, it was amazing to witness such a feat!

It had been about a dead-even fight, but that would have been a 10-6 round for Castillo. Corrales knew he could only win by a KO. He pulled it off.

For those wondering why the ref. stopped the fight. You will notice that Diego Corrales began a flurry of jabs near the end and would not had of stopped punching the dazed Jose Luis Castillo, unless the ref. stopped the fight. Good call by the referee.
