  • Gaga has absolutely NOTHING to do with being "FREE". Maybe in her attempt to express herself and create an image like Madonna. I think we all know Nicey was great, but while you are discussing this, you need to bring into the mix Mariah, Whitney and other Octave singers. Nicey was the one and only woman that could sing decently again Johnny Mathis.

  • This whole album was great!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I would always feel good when this song would play, more if I were at the beach or on a hot date. I still feel good when I hear Deniece William's voice, awesome. Smooth and jazzy!

  • Before Mariah, before Whitney, there was an amazing Singer that deserved recognition and the tile of DIVA. There is something that she had that Mariah and Whitney missed, the absolute beauty of honesty.

  • This was the song, that me realize...I just wanna to be free....Thx..Ms.Williams...

  • NIECY SHOWING HER SKILLS

  • In regard to lady Gaga, It’s called the law of entropy

  • I love this song forever killer oldies long live oldies... Oi..

  • Love her...still.

  • How can you not loveeeeeee this?!?!?!

  • It's impossible not to love it!

  • Thanks to Youtube our children will see and hear that there was once good music.

  • this is such a beautiful song you have to pay attention to enjoy it

  • LiL B was born on August 17, 1989. Deniece Williams sang this song in 1976 when she was 26. Since that is 13 years before his time, I think we know who stole the beats. LOL

  • Delicate sweet songbird!!

  • Stole this beat from Lil B, look up "They Love Me" by lil b and learn the truth

  • @TwittSoup WTF LIL B SUCKS! GET OUT OF HERE! THIS IS CLASSIC MUSIC DUMBASS

  • @TwittSoup

    fag shit..

look up k-dee and the twinz

  • @TwittSoup Your a IDIOT if you honestly believe what you just posted!

    'nuff said.

  • @Rooster450xl you must not have looked it up , ignorant

  • that was my how i feeling back then ,an i still feel the same. Music you could feel then &now

  • As soon i as i hear her voice i get chills. What a voice.

  • Today, I heard a cover of this song done with a guy singing. It sounded to me a lot like the Wondermints, but I doubt it was. It definitely *wasn't* Will Downing. Anyone have any idea who it might've been?

  • @bricology yes it's will downing,,,

  • @1969soulflower -- No, it was definitely NOT Will Downing, as I already pointed out. I listened to that version before I asked my question.

The version I had heard was very restrained; almost Brian Wilson-like, without the "soul" effects that Will Downing used. It also had very similar horn vamps to Deniece Williams' version.

    Anyone?

  • @bricology i wasn't trying to be smart with my reply...... will downing is the only other version that i have heard....i apologize if i offended you....

  • I found this song after listening to Mic Geronimo's song "Shit's Real" and wondering what he was sampling. Turns out it was this beauty!

  • this song is so good you can just sit back and groove and not have a care in the world...

  • They dnt do it like this no more

  • Another great production by MR.Maurice White and the late great Charles stepney

  • beautiful.

  • Always will love this song.

  • NOW THAT I'M OLDER, I FINALLY LISTENED TO THE WORDS... THIS SONG IS GANGSTA!!!

  • Sweet indeed.

  • The most beautiful voice i,ve ever heard- FACT

  • She is definitely one classy singer! I was only 19 and already working when this song was first out

  • Niecy is one of my favorite artists from back in the day.

  • lift my spirits den every time babe god bless you my lovedone

  • This will always be my jam

  • @gynuwin mine 2!!!!!!!!

  • This song still on fire after all these years. definitely the child hood in the 80s.

    Golden!

  • For the 6 dislikes, I mean really! Did you take your meds this morning!!! SMH!

  • Love it, now i can finally relax and give my ears a treat.

  • Classic!

  • Classic slow jam

  • When I sit down and listen to artist like Denise it reminds me of the days gone by where music was music and meant something.

  • How can we say humans are evolving into something greater if Lady Gaga came 30 years later? Proof of decline and not ascension

  • @guscaldas2 plz don't compare two different genre together we came here to listen to the good music thts playing right now

  • I was born in the 70s. As a kid, I grew up listening to my folks play this on the turntable, way before CDs, lol. This is what music truly is. Deniece Williams, along with the other legends such as Minnie Riperton, Roberta Flack, and Donnie Hathaway are/were true, talented musicians. You could feel the melodies and the lyrics of the song, to dance to as well. Today's music just doesn't compare to this classic.

  • They just don't make sweet music like this these days.....

  • Oooh, this is my sweetheart... this song really relaxes me of any and all strife and pain. It makes me think of sunshine and flowers and most of all ...the good times with me and my folks and especially, me hugging my late mother again and again.

  • Dreamy voice..

  • WHO CAN DISLIKE THIS SONG??? IS THAT EVEN LEGAL!!!! seriously tho...

  • @christianhaywood99 Lady Gaga fans

  • whats the name of the cover by phil perry!

  • I remember when this album FIRST came out. I was still in high school. I thought she had a voice to die for. This album picture of her reminded me of my step-sister [stepfather's daughter for a prior relationship] and how she looked at that time. I used to absolutely LOVE this song.

  • After I die and get in line to return to earth I am going to ask God to give me a set of vocal cords and a delivery system just like Deniece's. Good song Deniece! Wow! Chfbrbear.

  • this song brings back a lot of memories, good ones!

  • This is a Masterpiece, Far Rock NYC stand up!!!!

  • 4 dummies are still paying

  • Now this is a beu t ful classic man 9th grade LA south central Charles Drew

    jr High

  • Of all the singers I have on my ipod.....I think for the rest of the year, Ms. Williams will have to be my favorite. I like all the comments that this should be a 10 min. remix, my only issue is that I can only dance to this about 4 1/2 mins. Then I get tired. Out of shape. LOL. But seriously, she is truly fab ol skool.....right up there with Al Greene, Roberta Flack. Luv, luv, luv "Free"

  • THIS IS A MASTERPIECE.

  • This was one of the first 45's i bought as a kid in '76. Love it!

  • @The096757 that was a very ignorant statement of you to say

  • @timbalandfan83 why bother responding to it then lol

  • idk y i always thought this was minnie riperton

  • I became Free when I made up my mind he was where he needed to be, and I was so much happier without his presence.

  • @bransonbelle - very well said - my man doesn't yet know that soon I'm going to be free too!

  • You Cant Fuck with Queen B - Lil' Kim Brought me here (:

  • @notoriousdan562 shes washed up. i never heard kim come out with anything like this or even close to this.

  • @lubui2583 Look it up on Youtube. She samples this song, it ain't that bad. And Kim is not washed up, she is very underrated.

  • @notoriousdan562 shes not underrated. her best album was that hardcore album. i remember her sampling this. shes not the only one to. the only reason why i say shes washed up is because what is she talking about in every single song? sucking this and sucking that bla bla bla lol. it was entertaining in the 90's. not to mention she came up with biggie. i dont even remember how we got on this subject lol.

  • @lubui2583 She does not just talk about that in each of her songs, to say that is very ignorant. I must admit tho, her best work was back in the 90's. But she is not washed up!

  • @notoriousdan562 ok 99.9% of her rhymes thats what she talks about lmao. come on at least keep it real. im not saying shes not talented or anything like that.

  • @notoriousdan562 100 rappers sampled this song

  • @lubui2583 comparing lil'kim with deniece williams is kinda silly. would be like comparing dr dre to james brown

  • @Funkdogg yea thats what i basically just said if u read the entire conversation. but thanks your opinion means everything

  • don't you just get goose bumps at the sound at 3:31?

  • "I Just Got To Be Me"...Amen Niecy!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I luv this song!!!

  • as a little girl I remember singing in my room with my hard azz hairbrush ....with crown grease on my hands...jammin.....lol love it thanks for posting....great feeling

  • Thumbs up if you remember that summer when this song hit the airwaves.

  • One time I heard this when I was really elevated and the richness of the bassline came through so hard . So many intricate patters. Would love for someone to attempt the same pattern tones and rhthym with an 808 kickdrum.

  • mother use to play this. good memories

  • Love this Song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ahhhhhh the masterpieces of the 70s..... My girlfriend and I use to sneak into the other room away from her parents when this song came on........... it was ELECTRIC !!!!

  • 4 people don't want to be FREEEEEE

  • A great Philosophy! To be free, and to be me. Thank you Niecy.

  • I was makin those 70's - 80's babies. Thanks, Niecy, Teddy, Eddie & Walter, and Ron Isley. We had the best music.

  • @kevc21

it was the women born around 1950 who made the best music. '70s babies (and later ones) haven't made anything notable, they never will.

  • These are the song s that live forever in our hearts and minds.

  • @soulshower....only someone who is tone deaf or dead can dislike this song

  • beautiful song..neicy alwyas had that voice that sounded like an angel singing from heaven...very pure..and light and melodic

  • "Now this is what i called music"

  • I love my mama just from bringing me up on this type of music!!!!!

  • @laweezyana09 same here...so lucky...

  • @laweezyana09 I remember my Mama picking me up from kindergarten one day and this song was on the radio, and she was matching Niecy note for note...this was when THE RADIO was the "mixtape"!

  • @laweezyana09 Now that's good parenting. :-)

  • 1976...Senior year graduation/ Freshman year of college. Deniece Williams, The Emotions, Earth, Wind & Fire...call it LOVE!!! And, it STILL IS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • At 13 I played this over and over and over and over again....over and over and over again, squeaky voice made it EASY to hit the high notes.

  • 1976.....awesome year, and when this came out, i was hooked INSTANTLY...MAGIC.

  • This song touch my life when I was 15.....Wow! I used to blast this on my first stereo system. Unfortunately my sister stole (borrow but never returned) my stereo and albums...... I guess she thought the song was saying "my stuff is FREE"!!!!......... Great slow Jam!!!

  • Sharing links with Karen. I had this albuml 1976. Good times and memories.

  • Wow! I'ma start playin' this when the ladies come over.

  • @pogistarr you that homeboy. good for you. i'm pretty sure you'll have a shoebox full of panties afterwhile. I'mma start playing this when the fellas come over. great idea. -_-

  • @musiqtube1 LOL! No doubt! I would love if a woman set it off with this after inviting me over! It would DEFINITELY work in her favor!

  • lol! me to and iam a guy :)

  • Yo...... this track BANGS!

  • The arrangement of this song causes it to be a classic and fits Deniece's voice perefctly..

Very jazzy, very smooth, keeping the links to gospel and even the Blues. Similar to Norman Connors. Lovely , jazzy electric piano, a la Herbie Hancock, towards the end.

Today, those links have been mostly lost in favour of gimmicky electronic dubbing.

  • @taildragger53

I agree, it's musically inventive in the right way....made to send shivers down the spine.

  • @MegaGARFISH I actually only just realised she was backed here by Earth, Wind & Fire. Then i noticed, someone has commented on this already. This accounts for the high level production.

  • I LOVE YOU DENIECE WILLIAMS, YOUR SONGS TOUCH MY HEART. I WOULD MARRY YOU IN A SEC!!!! YOUR VOICE IS AMAZING

  • they don't make singers like her anymore

  • There is something about this song that just makes me want to be so FREE.... indeed ..It so beautiful to hear her voice....love this song

  • this was the first and only song that made me feel good after my first longtime love hurt me. it'll uplift you if you need to end it.

  • Does it need such an unnecessarily long introduction - which, for the bulk part, is a repetition of the first verse? I think not. Is a misplaced instrumental after the second first verse - which, as far as my single version from a compilation album is concerned, should have another verse overdubbed - necessary? Most certainly not. Disregarding the aforementioned complaints, this is nothing short of a masterpiece. This version, however, is wholly unrepresentative of this and therefore I dislike.

  • Oh "Niecy"! Run away with me!!!!

  • Marcus Miller brought me here lol

  • a classic no doubt

  • velvet voice

  • what a voice, niecy

  • I remember singing this song for my lil boyfriend in first grade when we broke up. LMFAO! =)) memories Im 20 now.

  • Is everybody posting comments here a freakin' illiterate? You really should stay in school and learn how to properly convey yourself in English. Those out of school, well, they're just cooler than me with their internet jive-speak. "Dis ma gurl," "threw brooklyn," and "fo real". Dis da reel deel ri-cheer: know speaky-no jobby! (Dumbed it down for 'em, don't blame me.)

  • @HomelessOnline Right on, right on, right on!!! I read these comments too and I just CRINGE!! Sorry, don't do the "ebonics" thing. Since when is stupid cool? Articulation isn't the sole province of the . . .
