Testament to how good Ray Robinson was, beating Gavilan twice couldn't have been easy. Ray said he hit him so hard with a right hand he thought he killed Gavilan.
One of my all time favourite fighters. The greatest Cuban boxer of them all for my money, and that's saying something when you consider that Cuba has also produced Jose Napoles, Luis Rodriguez, Kid Chocolate and Jose Legra.
In the good days everybody had iron jaw and was a true men! Not glamourous rich bitches like today! They were hitting so hard and they still were able to take those kind of punishment
The fact Ray beat Gavilan twice in Gavilans prime just goes to show how good Ray was, truely the greatest man to get in the ring, no question and his ranking as the best p4p will probably stay for ever.
damn straight, Ray won both fights against gavilan by close decisions. Their first bout couldv'e been a toss up- This is taken from NY Times.."although most sportswriters agreed that Robinson had won against gavilan, the fans "disagreed violently with the verdict in Robinsons favor" and "set up such a roar of disagreement that the introduction of the championship principals was delayed until order was restored." Ny Times 1949
lol. I love how the ref waits till Gavilan nearly kills the guy at 4:33 before he stops the fight. That fight would have been stopped 30 or 40 seconds earlier by today's standard. Probably even back then too it would have been stopped a little sooner by a better ref.
If Leonard had a weak chin how did he take punishment from Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler, and not to mention Thomas Hearns one of the hardest welterweight punchers ever
ray leonard couldn't beat kid gavilan in his wildest dreams....the kid went the distance twice with the greatest of all time, the real sugar ray...toe to toe, blow to blow, unbelievable fights, leonard had a weak chin the kid would've cut him up, too strong
Kid Gavilan was one of the greatest in the boxing world. I really like his signature bolo punch you don't see that punch anymore in boxing. Ray Robinson used the bolo punch quite a bit in his day. Now a days that punch is a rarity in boxing.
Wuz his real name Gerardo Gonzales? Top 10 welterweight. Didn't have alot of power but alot of grit, punching in bunches to wear out opponents. Great fighter.
yeah, but back then, you could beat on someone for quite a long time without the fight being stopped. I think he would've scored a lot more stoppages throwing as many punches as he did.
I agree with you, definitely a top 10, maybe even a top 5? Great boxer, very inventive and unpredictable, shame there isn't too much footage of him! He'd eat Cotto/Margarito/Williams and the like alive!
Great post! Kid Gavilan was Amazing! His talent skill and courage was Awesome! He had probably had the greatest chin ever (Jake LaMotta included) he was never KO'D! W108 (28KO's)-L30-D2 A Great tribute to a true Warrior and All Time Great fighter nice job.
He used to hang out at Alis training camp in Pennsylvannia back in the mid 70s. Looked about as old then as he does in the interview here. A Very nice man
I would have love to see Gavilan vs. Napoles both in their prime, that would've been amazing

They don't make em like that anymore.
These true boxers made their statements in the ring and loved the competition! If I could only go back in time to see these fights live.

It would be good if someone could put up Gavilan's fight with Basilio. It had been on youtube in the past.
