Never trained with Carl Cestari or anything, but it's hard to argue with the simplicity and usefulness of the stuff he is doing. Unless, of course you are fifteen years old and you entire view of martial arts comes from watching MMA.
I can see for someone with a narow perspective how these techniques could be nitpicked, but if you look at the kind of stuff Cestari taught, it appears to be more effective self defense than what is taught in 90% of traditional dojos OR MMA gyms.
Defendu, I don't know what you are talking about, Carl did use hip rotation to generate power. The proble with the video is you have Damian Ross demonstrating the movements, and frankly, he is just not that good at it. He was in the videos with Carl b/c he owned the school they were filmed at. To see how it is really done, you need to see guys like Clint Sporman, Ralph Grasso and Tony B.
Carl Hands rock even without one finger sure they can break a jaw of any dude no doubt about it.Closed punch fists are not pwerful as hammer punches in latests MMA the hammer punches makes thec devasting blows right?
you all stfu, cestari is the shit, i dnt see you all posting videos on doing shit so stfu, cestari wud fuck you guys up and so would any of his pupils
just like many awesome krotty showcases, where they do lightning fast kata moves, looks nice and flashy, but a jab holds more power than those chops if you want to use them in self-defense.
Carl Cestari's system uses a forward motion to power strikes. Usually, there is no hip rotation, only as hard forward step to put body weight behind a strike.
A lead edge of hand is more powerful than a boxer's jab. Anyone who says other wise doesn't know what they're talking about.
1. I used several edge of hand blows once in a fight, and they did the trick. They were so fast that if you were watching it, the move would seem like one motion, not a telegraphed movie style judo chop.
2. Chops are used in MMA. They're called Hammerfists. Exact same thing w/ fingers curled.
3. As to power generation, Dempsey developed and used the drop/falling step in his fights. it worked for him.
4. Chops can be delivered directly or in a circle, with as much or little torque as you want.
In addition: An important thing in power generation is to move in the direction of the strike. Forward drop steps, hip torque, dropping and springing up into a blow can all be used depending on the situation. Sometimes it's even best to deliver a blow with speed rather than power and then follow up with power blows. As the saying goes "lead with speed, follow with power".
Agreed! Especially considering whoever can get the first hit in usually will be the victor in a street fight, as long as they follow through with power after the initial speed intro..
That's Carl with Self Defense Company founder Damian Ross. This video was shot in Damian's dojo in 2003-04.

weak combo, no turn of hips = no power.

the edge of the hand takes a long time to strike, while a boxers jab doesnt. Anyone who says other wise never been in a fight or watched MMA fights.
How come jumping kicks and chops arent used ?
I still stand behind my words, no turn of hips = no power, and i watched some older Cestaris stuff, and he used his hip in them.

Those combinations don't seem very efficient in terms of bodymechanics.
