  • where can i join this barbershop stuff? i live in minnesota an i really wanna start a quartet

  • you guys go toooooooooooooo low this tag is meant to go 1 octave higher but you guys are in tune

  • Man I've been watching this video for years. Best "Cry" tag on youtube.

  • @AOnezie THIS. Since 2007.

  • holy fuking shit.. that bass!!!!!!!

  • Dang, black dude's voice goes way down deep!

  • Man, that last chord is great!

  • @Luieburger Hehe, so can I. Feels good to be able to go that low when you're only 14 like I am =P

  • I can hit that note! :D I just gave it a try.

  • hahahahahah that is so freakin cool!!!!! you are a freakin G for going that low

  • noone cares if your white. Im white too, who the fuck cares?

  • those overtones are tight!

  • So it was an overtone and not Sean? It is SO fun singing an overtone in a quartet. And then hearing them in the crowd is amazing too. My high school quartet, JAG, sang Love Me and the World Is Mine and have quite a few overtones toward the end. It is up, go ahead and take a look.

  • If it is in the Key of Eb, it it Sean that is singing the seventh (Db) or is that an overtone at :20? If it is in D then it is the Major seventh (Db) still.

  • Is that just distortion on the recording, or did I hear an overtone on the 9 and another overtone on the major 7 two octaves above that?

  • It's not really that low. It just sounds deeper from the way he projects it with almost a growly voice.

  • dear god...

  • SICK

  • Love the Got Ring Shirt!

  • hahaha awesome

  • daaaaamn

  • My god, this is amazing. I've listened to this over and over again and I've never gotten tired of hearing it.

  • It sounds more like a D than an Eb

  • lol d isnt even in the scale, its Eb

  • maybe not. i can hit a note lower

  • thats the lowest note i can even hit.

  • i love brandons face when he hears the correct note from carls mouth

  • Brandon isn't even in this. That's Sean.

  • if you guys are into low, resonant basses, you should check out the St. Petersburg Chamber Choir. Although the basses arent as warm sounding as this guy, they're kind of metallic sounding actually, their projection and range are awesome. Also, its not barbershop music, but dont let that stop you.

  • Hi:

I wanted to wish you a good holiday...and thank you for the work this year.

    Have a good summer...Paul

  • That's a helluva not - but you've got to realize it's not only Karl/Carl (<-sp?) responsible for it. Any barbershopper will tell you the best bass is the one enhanced by a great, resonant bari. The low 1-5 lock with mucho resonance will make entire rooms vibrate. I'm a bass that can get down to a B/Bb at times - the bari is what make the magic a fifth above you! MAN - I love finding this stuff on YouTube - been watching all night!!!

  • If the Bass and Bari do the 1-5 lock perfectly (matching both pitch and formants [vowel mouth shape]), then you'll get an undertone. It'll be further enhanced if the Lead is singing a perfect octave above the Bass, and the Tenor a perfect 5/4 Major Third above the Lead, all with matched formants.

  • The fascinating thing is, the undertone doesn't actually exist, unlike overtones which do and can be seen in a spectral analysis. The undertone is created in the BRAIN of the listener! It's because the 1-5-1-3 pattern just happens to be the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th harmonics, respectively, and the brain wonders what happened to the fundamental (1st harmonic) and so fills it in!

This is also how SRS TruBass and other modern bass boosts work.

  • Bb? You serious? thats awesome.

  • its an Eb

  • yea i know. but someone commented earlier on and said they could hit a Bb which I dont believe

  • At a Sound of the Rockies retreat we did it was a Low A... Bass of Nexus pulled it off easy.

  • yikes. we do this tag but i end on B and its low. i couldn't imagine ending on Bb or A. Thats ridiculous.

  • ... but very much possible!

  • youtube..com/watch?v=dr8gMYxbP-4

  • sick

  • his voice projects giving him something a lot of basses can't do, yeah it's an Eb but it's a projected Eb

  • You can project any note that you're able to hit. You just have to learn how. It takes ab work, and it's really not that hard once you know how.

  • this is seriously so sweet. i've showed all my barbershop guys this

  • ...It's an Eb... It's not that terribly low... Standard Bass range... It's just a quality in his voice that makes it seem lower... Because I know for a fact he isn't an octave below

  • lol Who are you comparing to?

  • It didn't look like Sean was singing.

  • Awesome!!

  • you guys should listen some southern gospel bass singers, they are pretty good too

  • Tim Riley from Gold City was always my favorite.

  • Nevermind, it is a D. My best is an Eb.

  • By the way, I think he's hitting a C. You sure it's a D?

  • i think at this point karl no longer sings for overtones, it is purely for the undertones, if you can actually perceive frequencies below that note haha

  • Which group does Carl sing with? I saw the (MIB) but am for familiar with that.

  • LOL he doesn't "hit" that note, he beats it into submission. Schweet.

  • that was like an Eb or so, and it sounded damn nice

  • *shiver*

  • is he Karl Hudson? from the men in black barbershop quartet?

  • yeah yall, after i recorded this video, the ceiling in parts of the cafeteria collapsed from the undertones and seizmic activity from karls voice. yeah that was a d and i can hit that (big deal)and so can many other people, but karl literally brings the roof down (ok not literally but he rocks) when he does it. lik i said, one work "didgeridoo" lol. not like he cant drop a Bb or an A, i mean how many people can power out a D below the staff?

  • @wyzzardfamily actually not many people can hit a d, especially hit a d nice and loud.

  • @waterbear2

Really? I can hit a low D nice and loud. I think it's more common than you would expect. Check out other people's barbershop videos on here, there's a lot of great bassos... Also, check out "O Wie Will Ich Triumphieren" Mozart wrote a 4 measure long low D. It's not THAT uncommon.

  • Well... i can go that low as well =P one or two notes below it... but still, nice =)

  • well, whether u can do it as loud as carl is up in the air :P : )

  • (im only 15 yrs old...) O=)

i can easily sing that note... but, you are right... not as loud as Carl =) hehe...

though i go to a kind of "choir school" in Sweden...

  • haha I was a weird kid and started growing pubes on my pelvic pone in 2nd grade. Voice began to deepen in 3rd grade. I started growing long strands of hair on my chin when I was in 6th grade, and could have my mustache and chin covered in hair in 7th grade. Started growing chest hair in 9th grade. I could of hit close to Carl when I was 13. Beat that, kid. ;D

  • please record something and post it on youtube, i'd be glad to hear it =)

  • lolol Right.. I'd feel stupid if I did that. Why would you be glad I did it?

  • I myself am a lead singer, and basses fascinate me... tbh i've been watching this clip like every day for the last week just because the sound of Carl's voice is so awesome... =)

  • lol Well, I'm not a very good singer, but I could give you a taste of my bass.

  • im 13 i can hit tht note mabey one or two notes lower just not as loud as karl is doing it in the vid.

  • Right... Of course, it's possibly possible, but it sounds too good to be true. I doubt even Josh Turner at age 13 could hit that note, especially one or two notes lower. You would be a monster if you could. Record a video of yourself bellowing and put it on here. I'll be the judge of this. :P

  • i dont see the big deal here. i bet lots of kids my age or a little older than me can hit this. one person on here said they could hit it and there 15. me and my friend can deffinitly hit it. srry if u dont belive me i mean mabey i just started developing early im only 6'2" and just turned 14 :/

  • lol You said you were 13. Let me tell you, physical appearance of a 13 year old is normally a big difference compared to a 14 year old. 14 sounds a lot more reasonable. 6'2" eh? That's pretty reasonable considering I've been 6'1" since I was 14. And there were still taller kids than me at that age.

  • I can hit that tone too.. and even that loud.. maybe louder.. but if it's loud it sounds very weird.. i mean the (cr)yyyyy letter..

  • Pubes on your pelvic bone?!?! That's too much info, guy!

  • AWESOME!

  • Now THAT'S a bass.

  • YOU ARE INSANE! :D How low you went?(What note ;) )

  • carl sick as hell omg!!!

  • holy shit carl.
