  • Wow!

  • The second guitarist is trying to play in the style of Django Reinhardt, Master of Gypsy Jazz and father of Jazz. I say great job to Dave. And Dickie of course.

  • @joshua9312 And Clements is playing a lot like Stephan Grapaldi

  • Vassar!!

  • Sorry folks I dont care if its a 15 dollar Montgomery Ward geetar they are both legends but I will bite down and shut up

  • This is some fine a picken and a singing

  • Vassar is like no other fiddle player...you can tell it's him in the first four beats of his break! One of a kind! Brilliant!

  • the second guitarist kiks ass... high speed ! very impressive

  • The bass player looks lonely...

  • @mikealberice shit , i didn't even notice there is a bass player xD

  • No offense, vibrasonic99, but Vassar is the king of swing fiddle. He was a killer bluegrasser too, but his contribution is fiddling outside of the box. Listen to his first break again and tell me it's a bluegrasser trying to fit in. Lol.

The one who is out of place here is Dickey. His heart is huge, but he is sitting for a reason. It's a little bit easier to fret something or other when sitting down.

  • is that a ibanez acoustic dickey is playing or what name is on that headstock

  • Sweeeet! I was lucky to see Vassar at magnolia fest the year befor he passed. That was one of the best trips I ever had.

  • that was incredible, never had the pleasure of seeing Betts pickin' acoustic...and he's playing with Vassar, the preeminent fiddler of the 20th century IMHO

  • thanks,

    great vidéo

    many thanks

  • Just couldnt not put some Vassar here tonight Dickey is just the sideshow LOL

  • That blind guy sure's awsome!

  • Great! Precise and sensitive musicians expression things like they are!

  • WOW! I use to watch this show every week back in the day. Unfortunately,

I didn't know who DIckey really was

back then. I wish more episodes

of Fire on the Mountain was here

    on youtube.

  • Sounds like Django grass to me!

  • can anyone get me or point me to a recording of this?

  • Follow this link to Wolfgang's Vault, tons of great stuff. They have a dozen or so DB concerts if you count the Allman Bros stuff. They also have some Vasar Clements stuff, he is the great fiddle player. It is safe to join site, they don't sell your email address, just send you an occasionial email. It is free!!

  • Incredible fiddle!

  • you're dumb

  • congratulations, you've insulted someone on youtube....

  • Isn't that a bearded Roy Huskey, Jr on ELECTRIC (!) bass?

  • it's too bad that dickey can't get a hold of his deamons, and get back with ABB.

  • sounds awesome , very low tech. still very danceable . igive it a ten . all the technology currently available and they was makin better records back in 74. .

    video killed the radio star....

  • Lovely !! Im from Scotland, Uk and if it was not for Youtube and the internet I could have missed stuff like this.. The great great thing about you Aemircan folk is , that you are not snobbish about music at all , the USA has time for everyone

  • my friend,(a free history lesson)

this music is called bluegrass..before that it was called mountain music, and hillbilly music ( i am from kentucky where it all started)..

also the style of guitar playing is called flat picking... i am glad this music made it to the U.K

  • My friend,(a free correction)

this music is a mishmash of styles the closest of which would be western swing. The instrumentation is typical of what a bluegrass band would use except of course the missing mando (which the father of bluegrass played). Lyrically it's more traceable to country music which is not mountain music. Flatpicking transcends genre and the inverntor of the G-run (THE guitar lick in bluegrass) played with a thumbpick.

  • McEuen is not playing a banjo style often associated with bluegrass; Dickey Betts is playing a style more closely related to fiddle tune interpretation on guitar (Dan Crary comes to mind) and nothing close to what Tony Rice (or any other bluegrass guitarist) would play. Vassar is an awesome bluegrass fiddler, but this is swing fiddle all the way. As a side note, bluegrass guitar players don't use light strings with low action like that....too much fret-out. They don't use ovations either.

  • @vibrasonic99 I'm no fan of Ovation guitars myself, but I love this performance! I miss TNN.

  • @vibrasonic99 Yeah, but what does it matter what bluegrass players use? Bluegrass is not the only kind of music. Dickey Betts played with the Allman Brothers Band for many years and made amazing music that I like better than most bluegrass, even though I'm mainly a bluegrass musician. And who says bluegrass guitarist don't use ovation guitars? I've seen many different guitars used in bluegrass. Did you know Yamaha is great for Stanley-style crosspickin?

  • @HillbillyJ your post is asinine.

  • @vibrasonic99 How so, my friend?

  • @vibrasonic99 Come on now. If you are gonna insult me at least give me a reason.

  • @vibrasonic99 You are a nitpicking bitch...&...Peace

  • This is great stuff. I love youtube

  • It turns to really nice jam session :) Love to hear musicians jamming joyfully.

  • This is cool! Love Vassar and Dickey!

  • vassar rules

  • This is bad ass

  • Also type "Richard Betts" and "Betts Highway Call" for a few of these songs kindly posted here on YouTube...Enjoy!

  • This has some good licks, but it's not very good as a whole! This is the first bit of Dickey Betts doing "bluegrass" I have heard, and John barely touched his banjo... I still favorited it though!

  • Check out Dickey's "HIGHWAY CALL" CD from a decade before this video (1974). This was his first solo album as Richard Betts which he cut with Vassar, Chuk Leavell and an array of bluegrass players...it's a gem.

  • Only two guys in the world can get away with that hairdo - Vassar and Christopher Walken!

  • DB's voice was sooooo much stronger back then. Miss that now...

  • I would agree - they are all great - but Vassar is above em IMHO.

  • Vassar Clements is the star of this video for me. I don't recall hearing about Dave Sayler, but he put his best foot forward when given a chance to take a turn on his acoustic.

  • Thats awesome.

  • Thank YOU!! Wow. Two legends. Sweet!!!

  • Thank you so much for posting this...I had never seen these two on video before and what a treat! Y'all checkout Dickey's "Highway Call" CD he did with Vassar back in 1974...it's one of the best album you'll ever hear!

  • Only if more people knew about that record !

I got it when I was 17. The title track is my favoite.

  • someone please tell me who the other guitarist in this video is

  • Dave Salyer

  • IT IS DAVE SALYER

  • thanks for this. its good to see more of dickey. and this performance with vassar is great!

  • Thanks for putting this up. I've never seen or heard this before. Cool.

  • Dickey and Vassar, dont get much better than that... I saw Vassar perform many times with a local NY/NJ band, Stir Fried.. some great jams on cd ... thought I would share. stirfried. com/mediaMerch.html Rest in Peace Vassar...

  • What a great video!!! Dickey Betts is my favorite guitar player of ALL-TIME!!!

  • Great Video. Thanks.
