  • Love that Beloit name on the benchboard! Sad to see another machine gone from operation.

  • Hello. I have no idea who you are, but I like this video. I too worked in this mill for 28 yrs. It was great, but was I ever glad when I left to work in Saskatchewan for Weyerhaeuser Canada. Retired now & having a good time. Don Furlought

  • Damn fine video Kev. Wish we'd have documented our mill goin down in late 2003. I worked at a mill in Texas for 18 years before it shut down. Your video reminds me of our #2 machine and how i miss paper makin. Best time i ever had at work. Damn fine people as I'm sure were your mates are. Wish you all well and hope you've found your way since shutdown. The end of the video with shot of your crew was a nice touch. Im trying to get pics of our mill before its demolished. Its been sold for scrap.

  • This video makes be realize how much I miss working at our Mill. I left in '06,after the pulp mill and another papermachine were shut down, saw the fate coming, last year they shut the whole mill down, they were down to just over 200 employees from a peak of over 1,100 in the 80's.

  • our mill in melbourne australia is shutting down by june 2011 or sooner

commisioned around 1967 as a board machine but now able to make 145gsm to 750ums [ fluting , liners both white and brown , plasterboard liner , and pasterboard

will be a sad day for this winder operator the day we close for good

    the redundancy payout means nothing

90 of us production workers will be out of a job

  • alot of people moving out west from what i hear are struggling like dalhousie is too.... economy eh? its too bad for dalhousie. i wish i were mayor or councillor or something, id get this town moving again

  • my father jean guy landry worked there for 35 years, he is now in fort mcmurray cause the mill shutdown... anyone hear know my father??

  • Yes. I know your dad. He worked in the steam plant. Hope he does well in fort mcmoney. It's a big adjustment, but the money is good.

  • wow, those dryers must date back to 1928. Sad to see all the papermills going down. With the high dollar, high energy costs and low newsprint demand...well.there is no future in the forest industry. All the companies "NOT" re-investing in the local mills over the last 10+ yrs did not help either.

  • You got those dryers right. Construction of the mill began in 1928 and it was officially opened in 1930. (I was a third generation papermaker.) There were a lot of changes made over the years, but the dryers remained.

  • we are going down as well now, shutting in january busuness not viable due to 145% gas price rise.another UK mill goes under and no-one seems to care

  • Sorry to hear that. I hope things work out for you. Looks like the UK and east coast Canada are getting hit by this.

  • & Just in case you didn't get it....I was being sarcastic with regards to my comments about AbitibiBowaters treating their former employees with respect, they did everything but treat these hard working folks with respect! For gods sakes, some of these men found out that they were losing their jobs off the evening news!Did A-B try to place these ex employees in another facility, nope! They just plain cut them loose! media statements about their employees being their #1 asset quote of the day Bull

  • I can't say how strongly i feel for the people that were affected by this!To you all i hope better days are ahead,to those i actually know,i hope you all make it through this corporate cluster f$#@ better off than you were before! It really is refreshing to see how such a huge corporation cares so much about the people that have dedicated their lives and many years service,to making the Company a success!Hats off to A-B for treating their most important asset with respect!Weaver worth $10 mil NO

  • Hmmm , won't let me comment!

  • bit of an arse to feed up that mc aint it ?

1 man does it on ours, all rope fed with a conveyor and air between the presses, piece of cake.

    shame you shut however.

  • Great video Kev. It's extremely sad to see so many good people out of work and such an efficient operation come to an end.

To all, thanks for the memory, good times and good luck in your future endeavors.

  • Thanks Dan. Looks like you made the right choice when you moved. Hope things are going well for you in Grand Falls.

  • hey if donald arseneault wins the riding in the next election he will qualify for a life time pension from the tax payers

  • Business owners and entrepreneurs start companies. Politicians deal with administrative issues, laws, etc. We do expect more from them, however, it is up to the people of Dalhousie to do something. The money is there for us to make use of if we can show viable options. Remember all the studies and surveys we've paid millions of dollars for wasn't just for the heck of it. A lot of ideas came out of those studies.

  • politicians have say. they can get stuff done. dalhousie is slowly dying, the people dont have many options so they look to there elected officials. i was at the meetings, i was at the rallies for the mill, the first one, no show, the second one, no show, the third one in front of his office, no show....finally 4 times later donald agrees to come to the meeting. its pathetic. but i suppose you are right, politicians are pretty worthless.

  • You know, as long as there is a mob mentality present, I doubt they will make an appearance. Many people want to help but there is no use speaking yet because others don't want to hear that. They just want a paper mill and that's that. Well, reality is that Paper mills are closing everywhere and they've been planning these shutdowns for decades. The paper industry switched to recycled product in most of North America.

  • Nice video showing the operations of the paper machines. Great video and soundtrack. Its good to document the shut down.

Work will come guys but its up to the citizens as to what we want. Otherwise, we'll never be happy with what "They" bring to us. There are loads of possibilities, and much is already in the works. Patience and determination will bring Dalhousie out of this mess.

  • Kevin, My dad (Harold) told me about this video you posted. Hats off to you. You did an excellent job.

  • Thanks. I appreciate it.
