But having heard it, I now assert boldly: The Germans did not build such powerful organs in the baroque merely to use 8' flutes, as many of the "Historically Informed" recordings nowadays do. Of course, often they are just using positive organs (rather than the great organ) to make recording easier.
I love the orchestral sound but what's up with the Virgil Fox FFF blastissimo registration in the Tutti sections? A simple plenum would suffice in this music, I would think.
holy crap he is conducting and playing the organ at the same time! that is really awesome. off topic, i also want to ask why does it say robotech in the title?
richter was a great (maybee the greatest) bach player. but here, it's a big mistake. heandel "was not" german (his music wasn't) and it can't be play as Bach's music.. horrible !!!!
He was most definitely German. Georg Freidrich Handel, born Halle (Saxony-Anhalt) 1685, Kappellmeister to the Elector of Hanover 1710, moved to London and subsequently employed by the Elector who was also by 1714 King of Great Britain and Ireland. You might not like his music but he was most definitely German - and so was the King, who could not speak a word of English!
@DAOFB It's approximately the 'correct' sound though, as this is a Neo-Baroque organ reminiscent of the style of the 18th Century. Admittedly there were variations in the interpretation of the 'Orgelbewegung' movement but you need the clear principals, sharp mixtures and correctly scaled mutations to get the right effect. No point in producing an authentic rendition of this work with a late-nineteenth century Romantic instrument I'm afraid.
Karl Richter'in de ruhu şad olsun. Diğer videolarında da çalarken ki kamera açılarından kendisini hep Ediz Hun'a benzetirim :))
I'm a German - my father lived with "Karli" in the neighborhood. He often went to the Richters and he was deeply impressed, how "Karli" played the piano. After 2nd world-war they lost track of themselves. In the 70ties, he went to a concert of Richter - after the concert he approached him: "Karli, do you remember, we were friends when we were kids" Richter: "Tut mir leid, ich kenne SIE nicht" (I'm sorry, I don't know who you are). He was a VIP and didn't want to have contact to "normal" people.
No it is not being 'arrogant and nationalistic'. The Germans are excellent at performing their music, apart from the English, who are just as good! Now perhaps you can guess my nationality michelffun???
I find some of the criticisms posted here rather strange. I think the performance here is superb, Karl Richter both playing and leading such a superb exhibition of musicianship. And what better to listen to German music performed by the Germans themselves. I rather feel that some of the silly comments here are merely down to jealousy and envy, not the best attributes of the human psyche, I'm afraid. And may Karl Richter's soul rest in peace.
I like the organist to for certain eras of music I like his Handel. His Bach is okay but it's a bit to much Marcel Dupre sound for me in other words very legato. But other than his Baroque music I consider him very highly
That's what you get from the Romantic style, but Dupre can be a little bit boring when he plays Bach. I'm using his editions of Bach organ works but also some by Karl Straube.
I agree with you, the organ doesn't really fit the space. If only Karl decided to play at Freiberg instead, that would be even more amazing. I'm going to upload some more recordings of him playing there soon.
Perhaps the organ fits the space, but the recording engineer got the microphones too close to the organ. The direct sound from the pipes seems to overpower the room acoustics, yet the orchestra sounds normal. I think the room is larger than it appears in this video.
Merci à Robotech, pour cette video exceptionnelle!
