she's a great goalie against other woman..she doesn't belong in the nhl with the men they are to tough and ruff and the pads are not going to stop the hurt from a 90 mph slap shot.she played in tampa and guy took a low hard slap shot and it trickled thru her legs from 35 yards away.thats not acceptable..her time in tampa bay was a complete publicity stunt to bring the fans back to tamp bay and it worked.. the fans are back now she was a small piece of that
She may not have been so great in the NHL, but i think she's a hero and a person to look up to for all girls that ever had that dream ( which is pretty much any girl who plays hockey ).
i totaly agree!!! she is such an inspiration... i'm form argentina i play roller hockey and almost nobody knows the sport..and i have always played with boys...i used to be a goalie but i started playing. there are no girls for me to play just a couple and we don't make a team.. but that never hold me down!! i love this sport!!!!!!! i wish i could do it for life!!
@Jsouthwell2006 yeah, i'm 19, 20 next Tue. i've always had that dream 'cause i love the sport! but here, in my country, those things are not possible; we barely even manage to have our sports club's suport; so you can imagine. i need new roller skates and i can't find my sice.a lot of thing more. it's really hard in all matters but i love it so much that i can't imagine myself not playing. i'll do it for as long as i can! maybe some day i'll find a girl team somewhere! thanks for the suport!! =D
I think she's an idol. She may of failed but she made it into the big leagues the NHL. It's like a dream to play in the NHL.Any thing guys can do girls can do too. Any thing is possible. Great video.
You have to nod your head to her at least, even if she didn't make it. Playing in the NHL is a big achievement and she's the only woman so far. It wasn't for nothing. It was mostly for publicity, but not on her part. The fact that she was taken after only a few minutes of junior hockey play tell you that it was more for publicity, FOR THE BUSINESS MEN, Manon was there to play. In this world we know nothing unless we try. She tried and, yes, failed, but there will be others that will not fail.
Manon Rheaume was used as a novelty to sell tickets in a non-hockey market.
For those brainwashed fools who truly believe the genders are equal (because the media says so), and that the NHL should go out of its way to accomodate women into the league; go ahead.
Put a girl on the ice for the sake of 'equality'...then let the guys on the other teams take care of her
I remember when I was in bantam AA, and some team we played had a girl on it that didn't belong there. It enraged me because she was taking the spot of a potentially much more talented male player that, because of her, was playing down a level in bantam A instead of on a AA team where he belonged. So, what did I do you ask? lol. I hit her so hard, she never set foot on bantam AA ice ever again. Fucking usless cunt. lol.
I won't deny that Manon Rheaume was used to sell tickets in a new market. But they certainly wouldn't have put her on the ice if they didn't feel she had some chance at doing somewhat of a decent job at playing. And if it wasn't for her we wouldn't have many of the women's hockey programs we have today. However, I don't entirely agree with what you're saying Manon Rheaume was set up into a position where she was bound to fail. Brett Hull and Brendan Shanahan were on the opposing team that night.
"However, I don't entirely agree with what you're saying Manon Rheaume was set up into a position where she was bound to fail."
You seemed to have missed the point I was trying to make. It was mainly viewed from physical size and stature. Playing netminder is one thing, but a female hockey player who gets in the sights of the wrong male hockey player is fair game...and in trouble.
For the record, the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup in 2004; and not with Manon Rheaume in goal.
Point taken, and that's true for a lot of women, but stature and size are not everything in hockey, look at Theo Fleury, Danny Briere, and Martin St. Louis. You're right though, and it would take someone stupid, incredibly talented, passionate, or just plain crazy to take that much physical risk. But for something you love? Someone could. Size isn't everything, if you know what you're doing.
She won an Olympic Silver, if she'd played goal the last game, they would've had gold.
If you remember the women's hockey event in the most recent Winter Olympics; Team Canada enjoyed an advantage not only in size, but in speed, strength, and finesse as well.
The game against Italy was almost cruel. The host team included girls as young as fifteen, and women as small as 5'2". The Canadian women were so much bigger, stronger and faster; it looked more like a beagle taking a licking from a rottweiler.
haha. now could you honestly tell me that if a woman worked her ass off, was put into the right situation with the right team, who would protect her not as a woman, but a teammate, and she made it clear that she wasn't going to take any crap, that she couldn't do it? it would take some serious physical ability and she'd have to be specially trained how to use what muscle she does have to an advantage. being small can be a good thing.
North Americans are naturally bigger than Europeans.
I don't know if you could find footage of Manon with the Lightning. She only played a practice or two with them. You'd be hard pressed to find footage of her with the Atlanta Knights (the Lightning's IHL affiliate), because she played only 1 game for them.
woman hockey players can be ugly. but some of them will surprise u. for example my x-gf grace hutchins played for the University of Wisconsin was very sexy. you can look it up. It's always a toss up cause u will run into Bull-Dykes.
GASP! it's my hottie! dude year sago some friend of mine attended an RHI open tryout just with the hopes that manon would wack us one tie with her stick! :)
weird. looking. kitchen.

Allow me to add to that: Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer, Denis Savard.
Also, I'm inclined to think that women's hockey has produced better goaltenders since Manon Rheaume.
