At least they weren't flat out rude like the othersB but some things they said and did to me/ around me disquieted me. If you look at the historical meaning of Akata it has nothing to do with slavery or describing the N word: CHECK WIKIPEDIA PLEASE

My family uses the word akata to identify african Americans but not as a insult, and I see nothing wrong with it because it is only used to describe african Americans. In Nigeria it's the norm. Most african Americans don't know the real meaning of akata, even most tribes outside of Nigeria and sometimes tribes in Nigeria that are not Yoruba don't know the real meaning and make up their own definiton, plain and simple. There are terms that describe Hispanics, Asians, white people, the white and black race, and africans Americans, in Nigeria as identification terms not insults. In Nigeria the majority identify african Americans as Akata simply as identification, simple not as a insult.

Contrary to popular opinion among non-Yorubas and some Nigerians or Africans who does not understand this word, akata does not mean coton picker or slave and it is not derogatory.
It means a cat that doesn't live at home like a wild non domesticated cat, this is used to reference mostly African Americans as they are considered Africans by all Africans but the fact that they don't live in Africa make them akata while those of us who live at home can be considered as Ologbo (cat).
