  • i miss good old music comming out every week,it was fun to hear at least 1 new record per week.

  • I still hate Yoko. But this rocks!

  • @shoogdon Don't be a hater. John would be ashamed of you.

  • Excelente version..... al puro estilo de John!!!!

  • BTW - bass player was Tony Levin for those sessions

  • tony levin RULES!

  • A much more punchy and rockin version than the one released. This is great. Thank you for posting!

  • //o-o\\

  • such a cool music video

  • Double Fantasy could have been like this...

  • What year is this? must bee the late 70's.

  • @sUop99 1980, actually. This is from the last album Lennon made just before he was murdered. Cheap Trick was invited to play on the upcoming album, two songs: I'm Losing you and Moving On. Both were recorded, but during production the versions of the songs sounded too much at odds with the rest of the album. The decision was made to use different versions that sounded more like the rest of the album. I don't know if the album versions were made before or after the Cheap Trick versions.

  • no better band to back his solo stuff

  • WELL, thats more like it !

  • The Best Post-Beatles Beatles.

    John, Rick, Bunny, and Tony.

  • this an exellent version. i like it much, much better than the original. it feels stronger.

  • I think I prefer the Colin James bluesy version

  • Ya tenia muchisimo tiempo sin escuchar esta cancion y en mis viejos tiempos hasta llegue a pensar que era mi favorita de john lennon bueno hasta la fecha :P lennon is good ♥

  • This is pretty cool, actually !! It works !!

  • Is this fan made?

  • @JaromSoule no, this was professionally done. they released this version on the John Lennon anthology

  • yeah!!!!!!

  • that was awesome!

  • The only band I trust to imitate/ emulate Lennon and the Beatles and darn good on original stuff too

  • Isn't that bass player from King Crimson? And yes the Rock n roll hall of fame is a joke, not to be taken seriously.

  • @Fooblestheclown Yep, that's Tony Levin - The greatest Bass Player of all time...

  • @bearmassaro .....far out man! Tony Levin was the fifth Beatle!

  • what the story? did lennon call cheap trick to do this?

  • @van440 If I recall it was the studio's choice, and Yoko wasn't happy about it. I could be wrong though, I'm not 100% on this.

  • Happy 71st Birthday John Lennon we all love and miss you RIP

  • awesome,,very raw

  • G. Gordon Liddy was in Cheap Trick?

  • I love this vidio, and this version of the song.

I remember hearing about this session in 1980, I new it had to be great. John, Rick, and Bun.......great stuff!

  • I just keep coming back to this video

    thanks

  • Thank you for posting this song :)

  • WHen was Tony Levin in the band?

    WHere's Robin Z ?]

  • My vote: Cheap Trick should play the super bowl!!!

  • @sirwob, Yes Really, That`s My Opinion, And that is the only thing that matters

  • A lot more pain in this version - sounds like he really means it.

  • wow..... that's all the comment i have

    mikey x

  • I like this version a lot but, as someone else pointed out, that it didn't fit with the prodcution of the rest of the Double Fantasy album I am guessing that is why this didn't make the final cut but excellent work anyway. I would have like to hear John work with Nielson and Bun E more.

  • @kentaappel well said,man...

  • cold turkey by the godfathers is the shit.

  • where is tom peterson?

  • great video. have'nt heard that song in years. thx for the upload

  • splash

  • milk it yoko, MILK IT !!

  • I just about shit when I saw Tony Levin in this. Where are Robin and Tom ? A Cheap Trick concert ain't Cheap Trick without them but there was no mistaking which band this was with Rick & Bun E.C. playing. Even with Lennon. Thanks for this.

  • @MWGrossmann

Ricj and Bun E. were the only two members of Cheap Trick to work with Lennon in 1980 which is probably why they didn't use Robin or Tom for the video. The Trick version is so much better!!!

  • Hey man, is that Tony Levin on the bass????

  • @Slipandfall360 Yes it is.

  • We're losing 26 people. Sounds good. (And you were Long, Long, Long Gone....)

  • why don't we all stop commenting on the number of dislikes? if they got zero

attention, maybe they would find another way to vent their rage....like primal scream therapy or drinking a lot of coffee??

  • Cheap trick are the most under- rated band ever. Rock n roll hall of fame is a joke,

  • @shedendboy1 Any hall of fame is a joke !

  • @shedendboy1 the best rock and roll band ever? really ?

  • Well done, I like it . Thanks for the lyrics !

  • Love ya Johnny ... how we miss you these days ...

  • Just watched this for the first time, and it brought back the memory of tthe radiocast of Mr. Lennon's demise. I say Mr. Lennon because I was taught respect for talent..

  • @TheRoggie67 This one came out in 1998 and until now you're hearing it? You missed the whole Lennon Anthology

  • Far Superior version than the one picked for "Double Fantasy"!

  • 26 people are doomed to Hell.

  • Funny thing I just Googled Jesus Christ 122 million hits

I also just Googled The Beatles 167 million......

Oh and by the way... Television got just over 1 Billion LOL.

Sometimes being proven right isn't as much fun as it was at the time.

  • is that cheap trick playing?

the bass player reminded me of 80s robert fripp

  • @generalreef

That's because it's Tony Levin, of 80s/90s Crimson fame. Levin actually played bass on the official Double Fantasy release as well.

  • is that cheap trick playing?

the bass player reminded me of 80s robert fripp

  • fodaaaa...otima homenagem *_*

  • I didn't think G.Gordon Liddy could rock like that, cool....

  • i wanna hear the other three tracks they recorded with lennon

  • Lennon did better with the Beatles!!!!!

  • that is Tony Levin on the bass right?

  • Is this cool or what?

What a gem! I've listened 4 times in a row already.

  • I love it! I really enjoyed it alot!!!

  • MUCH better version than the one that made the album.....................that version is WAY too MOR-oriented, IMHO. Actually, I don't think D.F. is Lennon's best album overall, but I won't get into that.

  • @lurch321 I do listen to it on loop love it!!!!!

  • @lurch321 a man that knows his Lennon, I like that.......so, whats his best Beatles and solo album ?

  • @sirwob Beatles: Abbey Road, solo: Walls and Bridges

  • @lurch321 think that this is a really cool grungy version of ILY but dont think it fits with the rest of the songs on double fantasy - the alvbum version suits much better. Double Fantasy is my favourite lennon solo album by far... but i think we all know plastic ono band is his best album, don't we? 8-)

  • @emirenfield why does a song have to "fit" an album....you think "when I'm 64" fit Sgt. Pepper?...and btw, what John said about his first 2 albums, he realized (after his first solo which didn't sell real well) Imagine was the 1st album "sugar-coated"

  • @sirwob No song should ever be pigeon-holed to fit an album. that's one of the reasons the white album is my most faourite album of all time. BUT john and yoko had a certain sound and a certain atmosphere they wanted to convey on double fantasy - and it didnt fit. that was a decision from both john and yoko and jack douglas. and i see exactly what they mean. dont get me wrong tho - the cheap trick version is great.

  • so has anyone heard if Bun E. Carlos is gonna be touring with cheap trick again any time soon? Rick's son is the drummer for now. anyone heard? thanks

    mike owens

  • @nothadnotbad Saw them a couple nights ago in Washington State. Rick's Son Dax is still playing the drums for them. He had a lot of energy and appeared to be having a great time! First time I saw CT I was a twelve year old kid and I've seen them many times since. It's nice to see a band that is way past the huge commercial success days, but appear to still be having a lot of fun(except Robin rarely smiles onstage anymore). They are just as good as when I saw them for the first time in 1978

  • nice roudy take on this song....

  • Cheap Trick a beaucoup de references aux Beatles et à John Lennon! I like it!!! Cheap trick is great and i love John Lennon!

  • I remember at the time hearing that Cheap Trick was recording with John on this album. I was disappointed when they were not on it. But by the time I bought the album, I wasn't thinking that much about Cheap Trick. John had already been shot.

This is a better version, imo. The first single from this album was Starting Over. John hadn't recorded in 5 years. I wasn't that impressed. This would have gotten me excited about it.

  • 3:17 holy shit, it's scatman john; bald

  • Tony Levin on bass! Lennon really picked some great musicians for this album.

  • SO COOL.. MANG

  • Love this edgy tune and his crisp, clear voice.

  • GOD I MISS HIM SO

  • This version is very different. But I do like it.

  • Yeppie!And he lost me.Still he s sad and lonely,surrounded by Liebchen.Hahahahahahahaha woehahahahaLOLLLLLLLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  • sic bass line...me likey

  • I'm not sure which version this is, but as I understand it, Cheap Trick did record with Lennon-as for this song-Yoko had Neilsen and Carlos' tracks removed, replaced by others, then released this version,,,sorry if I'm wrong. I did see Cheap Trick live in Las Vegas. They did Sgt. Pepper front to back. Amazing. JT8800

  • You are right. They did record it with John. I should have done some research before making that comment. Found proof in Interview with Rick Nielsen By Ronnie Dannelley

  • Thanks mraktaeb,

A very classy number, somewhat unexpected, which makes it spot on. Cheap Trick chugging out their sound as they do so well and John would have approved.

  • @undemanding They recorded this WITH John. It wasn't an afterthought years later. Cheap Trick recorded this with John shortly before his death

  • thanx for the answer BearMass!!!

  • WHO'S IS BALD GUY IN CHEAP TRICK???? I know it's not Robin or Tom.......

  • @LIRocker87 Tony Levin from King Crimson...

  • @bearmassaro That is he

  • Lennon was a genius. May he rest in peace and may his music continue to live on.

  • good version, but i hate that guitarist

  • @jamesxD94 THAT GUITARIST IS A BRILLIANT SONGWRITER!!! CHECK OUT MORE CHEAP TRICK!!!

  • I guess John Lennon is just a Cartoon now ,

  • this sounds like a mix of cold turkey and losin you, its got that gritty manic guitar tone, i love it!

  • Comment removed

  • @jminnehan

    I agree

  • This is one of my favourite Lennon tracks. Why the HELL wasn't it released?!

  • F******g brilliant, no idea why Yoko wouldn't let him realise this version ?

  • John we miss you

  • Comment removed

  • Didn't John have some fairly nasty things to say about Cheap Trick boys when they stopped by studio when he was alive?...Tony Levin is incredible period...one of the finest bass players alive...b

  • Amazing, unique voice. I could listen to this song on loop and never tire of it!

  • They did record this together but I believe the studio thought this version was too hard rocking and didn't fit in with the rest of the album, which is kind of softer and extremely beautiful (the John songs at least), so John did his own version with a little less guitar on it. Doesn't make sense, The Beatles had plenty of songs on albums that didn't fit in with the rest, but eh, studios are all crazy.

  • @superman11978 Truth be known Yoko thought it sounds a little too much in the Cold Turkey mould and suggested that they do something different. This is the better version IMHO

  • @Studmasterify Yoko ruined the Beatles, Why'd they listen to her? I l love it!

  • @peaceluvtaco No she didnt you yerk

  • @BeatleJohnGeorge Everyone I know says that she did, she is the reason the beatles broke up...

  • @peaceluvtaco If you hate Yoko you hate John its simple

  • Comment removed

  • @BeatleJohnGeorge John lennon is my GOD! People have their opinions, this is clearly mine,

  • stupid cunt , John would piss on turds like you

  • @spadge321 Look, I don't want a fight, but, isn't there a person/band, ect. you like, that has a relation to someone you don't like?

  • i like the stuff i do, yeah sure, i like zappa yeah, i dont like you emo rent boy, i dig the stones, i hate oasis and u2, i like rock and roll like the replacements and the dead boys and i have spent enough time flattering your fragile ego, go kill yourself queer !!

  • @spadge321 Please I don't want a fight. I just want to express feelings, isn't that what youtubes for? No, everybody thinks its to fight! Think about it, It's not to act like children! If you don't like my comment, don't get all mad because I have opinions....

  • Read the new Ken Sharp book about the "Double Fantasy" sessions. It tells the whole story of Cheap Trick's involvement.

  • JOHM was so great that he could play with anybody it sounds so verey good Iloved my freind RON KINGJHN:S BUD"at sinclair gig @2

  • Did John actually record this with Cheap Trick, or is it a later studio thing, with John's vocal and a new instrumental backing? Was Tony Levin in Cheap Trick in the 70's or early 80's? No, right?

  • @briteness Tony Levin wasn't in Cheap Trick but he did play on Double Fantasy.

  • They really blew it not releasing this version as the eventual track! Dynamite!

  • I like this video. I love this song pure rock and roll.

  • Tony Levin? Shit! I thought it was J. Gordon Liddy!

  • @patdthomas

    Oopsies! That's G. Gordon Liddy!

  • Wat a fabulous colabiration, don't care wat anyone has to say lennon had much more to give if allowed to go on shame on yu chapman hope they refuse yu the sixth time

  • This should have been the first single from Double Fantasy.

  • lennon should have done the whole album with Cheap Trick. Damn you Ono!

  • This is no trick and its not cheap...

  • a little hint of what Lennon could have produced once he got in with the right bunch of musicians

  • @RnRanimal Totally agreed. I think this is one of the best version of any of his songs!

  • @RnRanimal Yes, I think this is a real thing of what John would make after 1980. I think HE (John), would be very happy with this video. It is a real John Lennon video!!!!

  • @RnRanimal

if i want to know what he produces being in a room with the best of them i listen to the beatles ;P

but yeah, this is ggreat, but john didn't like it, didn't fit the album he wanted to make.

  • cheap trick, best pop rcok band ever...

  • @longhorn2615 you meant to say the beatles , right?

  • When did they make this video, it's awesome

  • kind of disheartening to see so many derogatory comments, if you don't appreciate his genious why would you come to this vid? to the clown that said he could see why MDC shot Mr. Lennon because he was a sell-out, Imagine was a song, get a freakin' clue and to the same man (and I use that word advisidly)a man that loved peace and love and tried to get the world on the same page, was he to give away his millions? what it comes down to is: if you don't appreciate Mr. Lennon, go somehwere else

  • Tony Levin played with Peter Gabriel on Shaking the Tree tour

  • That's Tony Levin on the bass. I love this version.

  • nielsen + levin + carlos = awesomeness!

  • Riff sounds like "Cold Turkey."

  • yeah cheap trick with tony levin

  • There is also a few times when John mentions in interviews what an amazing bass player Tony Levin is... shame we couldn't see them play live together, that would be freaking awesome!

  • Awesome

  • perfecta

  • That rocked. It brought tears. To my eyes. Love and little drawings and music and no war on earth please peace.

  • Check out how John counts out the timing at 1:40

  • Really, really great

  • This just kicks so much ass! RIP, John, We miss you!

  • I can't believe I've never heard this song before. It's fantastic! And the graphics are amazing! Thank you for posting this. What a great tribute 30 years after the loss.

  • love this, thanks john.

  • fuck chapman,he's a punk

  • Mark David Chapman should've gotten the death penalty. Who was the moron NY governor then? What about NYC mayor? Had to be liberals.

  • @bucky468 no rotting in jail until he dies is better... if they let that person out he will be offd... I still wont say that fuktards name or write it .

  • @bucky468 Why mention that fiend's name? He killed Lennon (at least in part) because he wanted to be famous. He wanted everyone to know and remember his name. As far as I'm concerned, he's just a murderous thug. His name doesn't deserve to be remembered by anyone. It has always bothered me that on the anniversary of Lennon's death the media gives this creep the satisfaction of hearing his name mentioned. They should just say that Lennon was murdered without mentioning his murder's name.
