@sUop99 1980, actually. This is from the last album Lennon made just before he was murdered. Cheap Trick was invited to play on the upcoming album, two songs: I'm Losing you and Moving On. Both were recorded, but during production the versions of the songs sounded too much at odds with the rest of the album. The decision was made to use different versions that sounded more like the rest of the album. I don't know if the album versions were made before or after the Cheap Trick versions.
Ya tenia muchisimo tiempo sin escuchar esta cancion y en mis viejos tiempos hasta llegue a pensar que era mi favorita de john lennon bueno hasta la fecha :P lennon is good ♥
I like this version a lot but, as someone else pointed out, that it didn't fit with the prodcution of the rest of the Double Fantasy album I am guessing that is why this didn't make the final cut but excellent work anyway. I would have like to hear John work with Nielson and Bun E more.
I just about shit when I saw Tony Levin in this. Where are Robin and Tom ? A Cheap Trick concert ain't Cheap Trick without them but there was no mistaking which band this was with Rick & Bun E.C. playing. Even with Lennon. Thanks for this.
Ricj and Bun E. were the only two members of Cheap Trick to work with Lennon in 1980 which is probably why they didn't use Robin or Tom for the video. The Trick version is so much better!!!
Just watched this for the first time, and it brought back the memory of tthe radiocast of Mr. Lennon's demise. I say Mr. Lennon because I was taught respect for talent..
MUCH better version than the one that made the album.....................that version is WAY too MOR-oriented, IMHO. Actually, I don't think D.F. is Lennon's best album overall, but I won't get into that.
@lurch321 think that this is a really cool grungy version of ILY but dont think it fits with the rest of the songs on double fantasy - the alvbum version suits much better. Double Fantasy is my favourite lennon solo album by far... but i think we all know plastic ono band is his best album, don't we? 8-)
@emirenfield why does a song have to "fit" an album....you think "when I'm 64" fit Sgt. Pepper?...and btw, what John said about his first 2 albums, he realized (after his first solo which didn't sell real well) Imagine was the 1st album "sugar-coated"
@sirwob No song should ever be pigeon-holed to fit an album. that's one of the reasons the white album is my most faourite album of all time. BUT john and yoko had a certain sound and a certain atmosphere they wanted to convey on double fantasy - and it didnt fit. that was a decision from both john and yoko and jack douglas. and i see exactly what they mean. dont get me wrong tho - the cheap trick version is great.
so has anyone heard if Bun E. Carlos is gonna be touring with cheap trick again any time soon? Rick's son is the drummer for now. anyone heard? thanks
@nothadnotbad Saw them a couple nights ago in Washington State. Rick's Son Dax is still playing the drums for them. He had a lot of energy and appeared to be having a great time! First time I saw CT I was a twelve year old kid and I've seen them many times since. It's nice to see a band that is way past the huge commercial success days, but appear to still be having a lot of fun(except Robin rarely smiles onstage anymore). They are just as good as when I saw them for the first time in 1978
I remember at the time hearing that Cheap Trick was recording with John on this album. I was disappointed when they were not on it. But by the time I bought the album, I wasn't thinking that much about Cheap Trick. John had already been shot.
This is a better version, imo. The first single from this album was Starting Over. John hadn't recorded in 5 years. I wasn't that impressed. This would have gotten me excited about it.
I'm not sure which version this is, but as I understand it, Cheap Trick did record with Lennon-as for this song-Yoko had Neilsen and Carlos' tracks removed, replaced by others, then released this version,,,sorry if I'm wrong. I did see Cheap Trick live in Las Vegas. They did Sgt. Pepper front to back. Amazing. JT8800
You are right. They did record it with John. I should have done some research before making that comment. Found proof in Interview with Rick Nielsen By Ronnie Dannelley
A very classy number, somewhat unexpected, which makes it spot on. Cheap Trick chugging out their sound as they do so well and John would have approved.
If you followed the history of Lennon you would see his evelotion from blue collar suburan post war to urban worldly hipster. He chose his first wife from this paradimg this faze of his growth ended when he found the type of person he was searching for in Yoko. She may not have been or would have never become famous without Lennon but he would not have grown and become the man he was without her or someone like her. He needed her more than she him. She said she never knew what a Beatle was
omg he was an good man with huge heart and some shit of a man - a half man kill him just like that ... i cant beleve it! P.S. after this u dont need to listen anything else.its a top!
Didn't John have some fairly nasty things to say about Cheap Trick boys when they stopped by studio when he was alive?...Tony Levin is incredible period...one of the finest bass players alive...b
They did record this together but I believe the studio thought this version was too hard rocking and didn't fit in with the rest of the album, which is kind of softer and extremely beautiful (the John songs at least), so John did his own version with a little less guitar on it. Doesn't make sense, The Beatles had plenty of songs on albums that didn't fit in with the rest, but eh, studios are all crazy.
@superman11978 Truth be known Yoko thought it sounds a little too much in the Cold Turkey mould and suggested that they do something different. This is the better version IMHO
i like the stuff i do, yeah sure, i like zappa yeah, i dont like you emo rent boy, i dig the stones, i hate oasis and u2, i like rock and roll like the replacements and the dead boys and i have spent enough time flattering your fragile ego, go kill yourself queer !!

Did John actually record this with Cheap Trick, or is it a later studio thing, with John's vocal and a new instrumental backing? Was Tony Levin in Cheap Trick in the 70's or early 80's? No, right?

@RnRanimal Yes, I think this is a real thing of what John would make after 1980. I think HE (John), would be very happy with this video. It is a real John Lennon video!!!!
kind of disheartening to see so many derogatory comments, if you don't appreciate his genious why would you come to this vid? to the clown that said he could see why MDC shot Mr. Lennon because he was a sell-out, Imagine was a song, get a freakin' clue and to the same man (and I use that word advisidly)a man that loved peace and love and tried to get the world on the same page, was he to give away his millions? what it comes down to is: if you don't appreciate Mr. Lennon, go somehwere else
There is also a few times when John mentions in interviews what an amazing bass player Tony Levin is... shame we couldn't see them play live together, that would be freaking awesome!
I can't believe I've never heard this song before. It's fantastic! And the graphics are amazing! Thank you for posting this. What a great tribute 30 years after the loss.
@bucky468 no rotting in jail until he dies is better... if they let that person out he will be offd... I still wont say that fuktards name or write it .
@bucky468 Why mention that fiend's name? He killed Lennon (at least in part) because he wanted to be famous. He wanted everyone to know and remember his name. As far as I'm concerned, he's just a murderous thug. His name doesn't deserve to be remembered by anyone. It has always bothered me that on the anniversary of Lennon's death the media gives this creep the satisfaction of hearing his name mentioned. They should just say that Lennon was murdered without mentioning his murder's name.

Mark David Chapman should've gotten the death penalty. Who was the moron NY governor then? What about NYC mayor? Had to be liberals.
