@gvanderleun Yea, Will unfortunataly in this day people steal videos off the web like crazy. As a videographer we have to do something to protect our videos.
Some day, I'll be up there, too. Since I was in middle school, I've wanted to be an atmospheric scientist. Since I was in middle school, I've loved nature and the wilderness, and have hiked everywhere in the White Mountains. Seriously, I HAVE to get into the Mount Washington Weather Observatory's internship some day.
For the record, although most of the Appalachian Mountains are mere hills compared to what you're probably used to, places like the White Mountains, the Adirondacks, parts of Maine, the Smoky Mountains, Mount Rogers, and parts of southern Virginia do actually compare to the kind of peaks out west. A ton of the mountains in Colorado might be 12,000 or 14,000 feet, but who cares if it is rising from a plateau at 8,000 feet? It's just the same.
the rime ice points into the wind---it does not form on the downwind (lee side) side of a structure, but on the windward side. it is, essentially frozen fog.
i have been to the top of Mt Washington in August and there was rime ice!! there is the possibility of snow every month of the year.

wow thta must be realy cold and windy! i once saw a video of a guy leaning into the wind, like trying to fall forwards , but couldnt cuase the wind is so strong! and how are u alouwed to stay up their? are u a meterologist?
Not really. The new record is held by a tropical system and a different entity than Mt. Washingtons extreme gust. There should be an asterisk against the typoons just for that fact.
from what i've read, Mt. Washington is actually very much so volcanic. in fact, the whole central area of NH is one big Caldera. Stretching from Mt. washington to the southern area near laconia. Thats almost (just a few tens of miles) smaller than the YellowStone caldera
I hike to the summit once or twice each winter, definitely on January 1 of each year. In 18 years, I've been turned back from the summit twice on the New Years hike. The other times, I can pick the days I want to climb, so 100% success rate. Nonetheless, the summit weather is often unutterably ferocious, and only a fool would approach a winter hike lightly.
Great video! So glad this is up. Very Important to have these things available for people to now what the are getting into and whats out there. Thank You so very much.
Sorry Folks, but there's no chair lift. There is the Mt. Washington Auto Road and the Cog Railway. If you want to hike up, the shortest way is by the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. It's about 4 1/2 miles long and starts at the A.M.C.'s visitors center on rt. 16 in Pinkham Notch. Before you start your hike check the weather report and bring warm clothes, it can get nasty even in the summer so be prepared, and bring a camera or video camera with you too, the views can be amazing!
haha "its like powder" You can tell you are really into powder snow... Really can you take lift up to 6000feet? what about high latitide sickness? dont think that is possible..
I was there 2 days ago but now here in the NorthEast is Autumn and it isn't cold which makes it perfect for sight-seeing. It's great and is a beautiful experience. I went with my girlfriend and we both loved it. There's tons of Indians and Asians that go there and they all don't know how to drive. The road is very narrow and the idiots took most of it, it's annoying but is still great, the view is just breathtaking. It's like being on top of the world.
you're lucky to still get so much rime ice. we used to have it for at least a month above 3500' in WV, two months above 4500' (highest 4850'). its been since 2004 that we've had near that long, since early 90's when it was normal. only a few days this year.
Wow! Thanks for showing me what rime ice is like. I live in the warm tropics and have never seen such a thing. Your video put me right there. Thanks for the cool video journal. Two Thumbs Up !
It doesn't feel like that. It is matched only by other mountain locations. But even there, the extreme conditions are not as consistant. The NE US is well known for it's persistant nasty weather.
hope they power their weather station with a wind turbine...

mt washington has the fastest wind speed on the surface of the earth, if im correct. not the fastest ever, but fastes on the surface of the earth.
DowntownTB13 1 year ago
The wind speed record wasn't broken, check Wikipedia for Typhoon Paka, it was a close call though.
Mt. Washington is an anomaly for its size, it's only 6288.75' high, but its weather rivals giants such as Denali and 8000 m peaks in the Himalayans.

i really don't think altitude sickness is a concern at 6000 feet up. actually, i don't think it's a concern until you get about three miles up.
