Couldnt stand the farm. Were just trying to be The Happy Mondays. Songs were crap and peter hooton just looked like he was 'having a go' at being Bez and Shaun Ryder in one.
Bands in these days were cocky because they knew they were good and produced amazing music there is no cockiness about todays music because most of it is rubbish.
But I knew Hooton a little bit as a kid (rather our families sort of knew of each other), he's 3 years older than me and we both moved away from Everton quite early. But he definitely worked on South Cantril Farm, cos that's where I met him again a decade later.
He may have made the conscious decision to call the band after a farm in Lydiate, but subconsciously I'm betting that the urban setting was also appropriate.

These guys were called "the soul of socialism" in the early 80's?? Oh God....how absolutely disgusting. Guess I'll just have to hold my nose while I listen to this tune. Ughhhhh.
In some ways yes, but the whole thing, the 'Madchester' brand, was basically a media thing. This is a brilliant song though, not to mention their great album 'Spartacus'
I remember seeing this on the 'Word' on Channel 4 here in Ireland in the early nineties
Good question. I dunno. I guess they just felt that the production team changed, so the name changed...? Or am I confused? :) Yeah the remixes were pretty ace. Oh, if you get the reissue of "Spartacus" that came out on CD in the UK a few years ago, it has a full bonus disc of TONS of remixes by those guys. Amazing.
Anyone know who the backing singers is? Carol Kenyon?

They were named after a farm in Maghull, the Cantril Farm connection is an urban myth.

This is the worst song ever recorded. I remember Morrissey refusing to play a festival because these guys were on the bill. Can't blame him really.
