I saw this in real life when I took a trip to Italy (It is in Italy, not spain). It's called the Palio and they run it twice a year. It's pretty crazy. And it's not sandy. The ground is hard clay, I walked on it after. There were chunks taken out of some area where a hoof landed. Me being a horse lover, I thought it was cruel, but it's their tradition, and people go nuts over (as you can see everyone running on to the track to congratulate the winner while horses are still running)

@TheCowgirrl03 As I said, the ground is not ideal to run horses full speed around corners on. As you can see, a few of them hit the wall and get trampled. This happens in almost every race, but they are so hell bent on winning that they do not slow down enough to assure they do not crash like that. This is like the super bowl in this area of Italy, and they will do anything to be the fastest even if that means risking their horses safety. Only about half the horses even finish the race.

@TheCowgirrl03 I don't believe they have any horse races like we have here in the states, though many accounts of cruelty can be seen here in racing too. Racing a 2 year old at full speed over a mile is cruel because their bones have not developed yet (proof can be seen in the story of Eight Belles and Barbaro). There isn't really a point, it is simply tradition and entertainment. I believe horses are athletes, but I think some people push them too far for money and/or fame.

@snapperpappers I know a bit about the QH racing.. My barrel horse is an x racer. We also have a stallion that is bread to race on top and barrel on bottom. Some people i know are dying to see him on the track (hes 3) but we are not gona run him like that. We dont wanna blow his mind or his legs. I did alot of research on the racing industry and its just not for us. I wanna see him at the NFR(when he is older). Thats our goal for him. nice talking to ya.

Its the Palio in Italy, its been run for hundreds of years. Horses train all year for this thing. I beleive Thoroughbreds and Arabians aren`t allowed because they`re too fragile. They also put up matts against the brick walls to help cushion he horses that go down at the turns. Not many horses are put down normally, 1 on average, its only run once or twice a year.

Definately not a race I`d enter one of my horses in.

Personally, I`ll be using the join up method, keep my horses barefoot, and keep them in a natural pasture. But they will be flat racers, at least the young ones will, I`ll also have a breed program.
