This song was a brilliant choice - it captured the balance between all aspects of this film - most importantly the melancholy behind the madness...I too was glued to my seat when I saw this in the theater, many moons ago!
man for so many years i thought i was the only person with an unusual connection to the credits of this movie, I mean seriously who holds something special ("feels touched" for the lack of a better term), with the credits of a movie, it sounds bizarre. after finding this i can gladly see that i am definately not alone. i love this movie I love this song Mel Gibson can do no wrong. man the memories.
@SPeacock WOW. You know they will never have a lineup of great movie like that again. Back then it was common. Now its one big movie and the rest is grabage or forgetable. 1989 was a great year for blockbusters.
@MrDoushebag Hi, Doushebag... I wouldn't be so sure!! Jeff is the producer and when he produces, he also often composes. In this case you can even hear him sing, at 3:31 this is Jeff Lynne you hear singing "Cheer Down"... The Master HIMSELF!!

@MrDoushebag - Hi again... So you seems to be pretty sure. And I admit that I'm not... So you must be right damn right!!! Si thanks for this information, and Cheers!!
The most beautiful saga ever made i'm 26 years old and since 8 years old i've seen those movies again and again.......................love it................fucking 80's the best for movies
Just think, if they made this movie today, it would end with some dumb gansta rap song that would just ruin it.. Nah, they wouldn't make a movie like this now anyway. The character development is too good!
I like how timeless this songs really is, when you think about it. So many '80s action/comedy movies would end with music, most of which sounds dated today or "stereotypically '80s". This one really stands the test of time. It doesn't sound '80s, or anything really, it's just an awesome song and the perfect end to an awesome movie. I think I need to watch this tonight...
I really liked this movie (of course)...but this song blew me away...usually I leave when the ending credits rolll...but I remember staying and listening to this song...Love it...RIP George Harrison...miss you...
@BOBBYSOX86 Nah, actually saw it on NBC repeatedly, which is a shame since it was all edited. I did catch the unedited version a few years ago on HBO which was pretty nice.
@Gorrrillla5 Agreed (and now it's 21!) Where does the time go? It's a top tune and I've still got it on my MP3 player today. RIP George Harrison (I've got his Time Bandtis theme track on there too)
This is one of the songs that can take me back years in memory. I can remember very minute details about days that have passed without notice. This is one of my favorite songs and kinda has a "Tom Petty" -ish sound to it. Very Well done.
Lethal Weapon 2 is a super film, love the music and the songs in the film. This song, Cheer Down by George Harrison rules!, George Harrison and Tom Petty wrote this song, I salute you both, you both are great musicians and songs writers.
I think he also sounds almost like one of the ELO guys. Apart from that, Electric Light Orchestra are backing this song obviously.
When I was searching for this song I never checked the soundtrack and so made a mistake by thinking that the actual artist were ELO and consequently no results were found.
@Conner149; You are close. This song was produced by Jeff Lynne, who was the founding member of ELO, and played drums on this track, and Tom Petty co-wrote the lyrics. Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and George Harrision were all friends.
@TurgeonFan77132 Well TP isn't on the backing track that's for sure. The backing was already finished in 1987 and was an unused backing track for the "Cloud Nine" album. TP and George resurrected it two years later and wrote "Cheer Down" around it. Now the backing vocals might be another matter entirely.
@TurgeonFan77132 There is a book called "Eight Arms To Hold You" by Mark Easter which documents all of The Beatles solo careers in depth specifically the recording of all the solo albums. In the entry for "Cheer Down" it mentions it was an unused backing track for "Cloud Nine". Apparently there were quite of few of these laying around. "P2 Vatican Blues" was another "Cloud Nine" leftover which I assume was later appropriated for Brainwashed.
@jldraw- If I'm not mistaking, the majority of "Brainwashed" did come from demos by George from the "Cloud Nine"/Traveling Wilburys period. He was able to do as much as he could with those songs while recording "Brainwashed," although he was very limited due to the cancer spreading. Jeff Lynne and Dhani Harrison finished up the tracks but kept them as simple as possible after George's personal request.
@TurgeonFan77132 It should also be noted that the only reason this song is featured in this film to begin with is due to George's friendship with Eric Clapton. Clapton had requested some songs from Harrison in late 89 to help pad out his "Journeyman" LP. Harrison sent him over a tape containing "Cheer Down", "Run So Far" and "That Kind Of Woman" and told Clapton to select a song for his album. Clapton selected "Run So Far" but apparently thought much of "Cheer Down" that it was included here.
- Agreed - infact the Lethal Weapon series is awesome even Lethal weapon 4 was a bit thin they stood it out all the way and maked one of the best film-series of this sentury.
Love it. This movie is in my words the best in the series, but they are all feelgood to watch. Talk about a good mood on the set spreading to the film!
I wonder what Captain Murphy says to them when he learns that they went there? He told them specifically to stay away from Rudd because he was a diplomat. I would've said to them 'leave anything for us'?
I remember "all those years ago" watching this movie in the theatre. I started to walk out, heard this tune and immediately headed back to my seat. I took it all in. Instant classic. Cheer Down!
Absolutely! "Hauntingly beautiful". This glued me to my seat at the end of the movie, instead of leaving. What a mind blowing, beautiful way to end this movie.
Lethal Weapon 2 was a good movie and all but I swear...this end credits sequence with the George Harrison song just fucking made it for me. I absolutely love this part!
Lethal Weapon and Die Hard, the two greatest movie franchises of all time. You can't name a bad one, all you can do is rate them. Even your least favorite is still gonna be good. It's a win-win situation. One more Lethal and one more Die Hard would be just fine. They've made 4 of each. We need 5.
- Yea i think they can find some materials for em, but i dont think Riggs and Murtaugh can take another round, they were a lit burnt out in Lethal weapon 4
Forgot in other reply to suggest viewing "Cheer Down Live in Japan 1991" here on YouTube and you can see them in person - his live concert there. Great version of this, and ya get to see George too, obviously. Hope it works for you.
its either jeff lynne or tom petty, or both at the same time. those 2 were close pals of george and they recorded lots of songs together and performed on each others albums. the highlight being the 2 traveling wilbury albums.
How come this film had the WB Shield in the end credits instead of the Big W logo like in the first Lethal Weapon movie? Were there any 1987-1990 WB movies that did use the old W logo in the end credits or did they all use the WB Shield instead?
The music in every Lethal weapon movie is great. I think they should bring back all the cast for one last time, another adventure and then it's time to retire and make Leo happy too! No deaths though.
It makes me so nostalgic... Great film, great pair of actors, and the final touch of this song just completed it. It left me a great feeling of hope, happiness, and friendship... Tks for posting it!! Bless!!
Performed by George Harrison, Produced by George Harrison and Jeff Lynne, Music by George Harrison, Lyrics (sont des mots) by George Harrison and Tom Petty. Alors, qu'est que c'est avec "J'adore cette chanson de Mickaël Karnen et Eric Clapton".

I know Riggs survived his wounds in this scene, but I didn't like how he ended up getting severly wounded in the end...

I always loved this song. I didn't even know it was from one of my favourite musicians until a couple months ago.

It makes me so nostalgic... Great film, great pair of actors, and the final touch of this song just completed it. It left me a great feeling of hope, happiness, and friendship... Tks for posting it!! Bless!!

If you watch the credits at the end it says
Performed by George Harrison, Produced by George Harrison and Jeff Lynne, Music by George Harrison, Lyrics (sont des mots) by George Harrison and Tom Petty. Alors, qu'est que c'est avec "J'adore cette chanson de Mickaël Karnen et Eric Clapton".
Brilliant GEORGE HARRISON song.
