  • How would I set my exposure when using this filter?

    I have a D7000.

    Thanks and great vid.

  • Will this filter fit with a Cokin P-system? Like, adding this filter first, and then mount the P-system "on top" of it?

  • Would a Hoya 58mm HMC NDX400 Filter be good for long exposure?

  • @goldenguy12345 That's the filter he's using

  • @goldenguy12345 It is the same as Gavin has but a different filter size.

  • The Hoya 9 stop N.D. works amazing. and, was very affordable.

  • So what happens if the shutter speed is over 30 seconds? Do you use Aperture priority? Does the camera adjust the shutter speed or do you have to work it out? These issues are not addressed and Gavin is giving a easy review.

  • @pjos111 some good cameras allow exposures that's longer than 30, but most have the BULB exposure for a longer exposure. It's better to use Manual to test things out, cuz sometimes the camera lies to you. :)

  • really glad to have found this. Thanks!

  • @gavtrain how does this attach to your lense? and will it work with the lense cap on?

  • Thats all very well but no one seems to stock them! Where can I buy an 82mm ND400 ?

    David

  • Fabulous effect, I'll buy one.

    David

  • Was this shot with your 40D - What lens was used, thanks :P

  • wow....you just leave the tripod with camera over there? OMG

  • Thanks, thanks, THANKS!

  • Gavin when I put the filter on it only gives me about 2 seconds even on an overcast day????? Very underexposed images....Any suggestions?

  • Good video

  • Hi Gav,

What is the settings & ISO on your camera without the Nd filter on ?

    Thanks

  • i'm testing with a (din8) welding glas. have to find the proper whitebalance. cost only 2 euro

  • Troll Gavtrain. Shoots pictures in RAW, uses automatic settings.

  • Hi Gav

Beautiful final picture. May I ask what lens were you using for this?

    Cheers

  • Mine just arrived - great tutorial there - thanks. I think I'm going to have fun with it and will watch your other videos too. Best wishes Gavtrain.

  • I love ordering from crookedimaging because of the free mini bag of haribo lol

  • Brilliant video! I've been trying to decide whether or not to purchase one of these filters. I can safely say I've made my mind up about this now!

  • I don't usually log in to Youtube to leave comments - but this was a great video. I've recently purchased this exact filter and was a little nervous about it. Glad to see things turn out great with it.

Are you still using this filter Gavin?

  • Hi Gavin, great video as are all of your others! I have learnt a lot from you :-)

I'm just wondering which hoya ND filter you would recommend for Sunrise Seascapes. And is stacking a Circular Polariser on the ND filter Ok ?

  • think you need your sensor cleaned gavin lol great vid im gonna get one of these would you recommend tghe hoya or the b&w 10 stop though?

  • Great video thanks.

  • I bought 8 stop ND filter, is that "enough"?

  • @DJannePC 8 stops should be pretty good for this kind of work, nut watch for colour shifts

  • @DJannePC are you sure it is 8 stops or it is nd8 filter? as nd8 filter gives you only 3 stops

  • I am comparing this filter with the B&W #110, a ten stop filter that is, unimportantly (mostly) and unexpectantly, a bit cheaper. Hoya or B&W?

  • How can you even expect a straight horizon shooting through a filter from "crooked imaging"? ;-)

Great video as usual! I have to admit though that you're a braver man than me, leaving your remote dangling just inches over those incoming breakers...

  • @rvdw98 Lol, It's been dunked in the drink on more then one occassion, but just keeps on working! It must be magic :-)

  • @rvdw98 Well, Hoya is one of the best filter producers out there.

  • @tardis1996 If I remember correctly, adobe allows Education discounts. When I was Home Schooled, I bought CS3 for I think $200.00. CS5 might be a bit more. Of course their are illegal ways, but I won't mention those here. If you need help finding the Education page, I can help.

  • @tardis1996 Use the RULER tool to draw along the horizon and then click Straighten (CS5 only) or Image - Roate Canvas - Arbatory.

As a student you are entitled to buy Photoshop at a greatly reduced are. Check out the Adobe store to find out info about student rates.

  • @gavtrain on lightroom, there is also a straighten tool, click the crop square, then click the ruler.

it's basically the same as CS5.

  • awesome shirt!

The video and pictures are as good as usual!

  • @aleksandersandstrom Thanks. Check out gavtrain dot com for details of the T-Shirt!

  • Nice video Gavin. Mind the water! Hopefully I'll be able to pick one of them soon. I tried the closed captioning beta, always interesting to see what it makes of in video speech, according to that it was apparently it was Cricket Evicting who sent it to you for blood testing! At least it has a go the poor thing. It also reads get wet as Gatwick! spooky....

  • nice vid gav! i'm about to purchase a canon 10-22 and thinking of picking up this filter as well. i have experience shooting with nd filters on my 18-55 with a nd8 filter. though, i'm also considering picking up a cokin filter holder and try my hands on using gnd filters. :)

  • @jnskyliner34 ndgrad filters are great but best waiting till you pick up the 10-22 as the lens barrel will rotate during focusing on the 18-55.. bit of a pain.

  • @rickjbradbury it's not for the 18-55, it's for the 10-22. :) i'm not buying anymore filters for my 18-55 once i get my 10-22.
