  • But that's how myths do stay alive

  • It was not whirlpool, the man were trapped behind deck buildings. Whirlpool is not strong enough to pull down life jacketed men.

  • This is exactly why I do not like riding on boats.

  • Go norwegian text!

  • 1:41 thihi "sea-men"

  • Yesss!!!!! - Norwegian text i can read HELL YE!

  • I remember seeing this on the evening news many, many years ago - back in the late 70s, I believe.

  • do you think that guy at 2:48 on the ship got off in time?

  • The Beaver having been a new ship, this should not have happened. I beleive that someone was not watching the radar on the Beaver. I see the radar on the Margaret Jane was runnung. Further more, if Morse Nowe knew what he was doing, he would have not went astern until everyone got off the comdemed Marjaret Jane, he knew that he had an iice breaker on the bow of the Beaver. May the poor lost fishermen rest in peace, If Morse Nowe is dead now, I hope he is still haunted from that day.

  • sumfin tommy dangerous and davey 2 sinks wud watch. 2 fukn sinky fly kunts like!!

  • RIP

  • lol, he said beaver

  • Sad so fucking sad it was obviously not intentional and I hope that everyone gets over it in time.

  • next time they should invent a ship that has propellers that can lift the ship in the air

  • I’m stunned by the speed of events in this clip. It’s a dire warning against reckless ramming as seen in recent years by organizations such as Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd. To the dead sailors R.I.P.

  • "Strick and Seaman Cling to the wreckage"

  • @av3nger3 lol... like that girl I was with last night

  • Yet another example of bloody piss-poor seamanship, certainly on the part of the Cape Beaver. Rule 1, slow down in fog, rule 2, if you hit another vessel, maintain dead slow engine revs to slow the intake of water and you have a chance of saving both ship and crew.

  • no escape drill no excuse.

  • Two of the men that died couldn't swim, one was a year away from retirement. Another was a young man named Crouse, son of a politician and just a teen. He was below deck throwing up the lifejackets to his mates and got swollowed up with the boat. He's a hero, try to tell me he's not. I don't remember hearing anything about the fourth fellow, there may not have been much to know: A lot of fellows would just work one season and leave in the 70's and 80's because the money was so good.

  • @lesterclaypool1 He was a hero and to his credit, no one expects a ship that size to go down in 2 minutes...He probably thought he had a little more time...RIP

  • They had two minutes to get off the ship and still 4 managed to not do it. That is sad

  • @expostfactum You don't abbandon ship as soon as you get hit, you try to save the ship.

  • @cabbievonbump I guess that depends on how badly the ship got hit. Clearly this one was toast from the get go.

  • ...and out of no where the hymn "Nearer my god to thee" starts playing as the ship slides under the sea. :'(

  • and thats why you do not separate when you collide. It was pretty obvious from the start that the Margaret Jane was going to go down, it was a much smaller, wood hulled vessel. The Cape Beaver moved astern, which is what sunk the vessel so fast. Everyone could have survived if they had waited for all to abandon ship before backing up.

  • damm you sunk my battle ship!!! lol

  • This is a great teaching guide about keeping a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) handy at all times. You never know when something could go wrong.

  • To the bottom of the Atlantic.

  • Holy shiiiiiiiit!

  • This is so sad. And why did the crew of the other ship just sit there until the other ship sank?

  • @VicTheMouth The ship sank very rapidly, and sending more men onto a rapidly sinking ship seems foolish to me.

  • @LighthawkTenchi That makes sense. Thanks

  • @VicTheMouth No problem. I just figured that you wanted an explanation, and that was the obvious one.

  • @VicTheMouth well they did not think the ship whould go down that fast and they could not do anything while the boat was going down

  • @PumaSew That makes sense, that ship did go down extrordinarily fast.

  • That 's horrible

  • Millions and millions of semen don't make it every year..........

  • @FlightLevelHeaded

"Millions and millions of semen don't make it every year.........."

    -- yours maybe!

  • @lsbrother hahaha.

  • @FlightLevelHeaded Millions and Millions?? Sounds like at least 10 million?? Every year?? I know the sea is dangerous and the world is big but so many ??

  • i would have fucked off and said it was not me we were all down the pub..

  • @ryan332007 the horn nowadays is always made to signal other ships as a last resort when it is being submerged. but back in the old days, the captain himself would blow the horn just as his bridge was going down. and if the captain was already dead, it was the job of the first mate to do so.

  • Wow. I wonder if those 4 guys were in the ship or they just drifted out into the fog.

  • @deadspace425

    Below Deck. Couldn't get out.

  • The cape Beaver was brand new and was out with a TV Crew and other guests and the "blame" was on having too many people on the bridge. The captain was both blind and destracted

  • Jesus, not much worse than drowning. The ship sank so quickly as well.

  • I remember watching this in the Coast Guard. They used this as a training film for Navigation Rules of the Road training (Part B Rule 5&6 "Safe Speed & Lookout) There was a lot of talk saying if the "Cape Beaver" capt didn't pull back, the boat wouldn't have sank so quick. RIP to the 4 crewmembers

  • Theres a lawsuit.

  • Wow...quite a run down of the event.

  • "One life raft collects six semen" LMAO

  • @woodpod And the humor in that is???

  • @sjem618 the only humor here is that one of the ships drivers can't drive

  • @GWR4079

Then I will laugh to if you die in a car crash biceaus you can't drive.

  • @sjem618 you fuckin reatard you allways have to go too far you imbercil

  • @GWR4079 you don't have a sence of humor!!!!!!

  • @woodpod Oh ha f***ing ha! See if you find it so funny when you're drowning trapped in a sinking ship!

  • No excuse, they both had radar. In fog that's your best friend.

  • radar works like a sonar?

  • @bored1980 radars are not a guarantee. they aren't as useful as you may think. and also communication is more important, but sometimes people misunderstand each other and may collide.

  • @bored1980 Radar is attenuated in rough sea conditions due to wind and sea clutter. Sometimes Shit happens.

  • @bored1980 Radar is attenuated in rough sea conditions due to wind and sea clutter. Sometimes collisions happen.

  • joder, qué rápido se hunde...

  • I was on a whale watching boat once when a small fishing boat crashed into our port stern side with their bow. SUNK! We were near shore as we were just departing and everyone just swam back. BUT—we were smart enough to grab life preservers once we saw the collision coming, unlike those aboard the Margret Jane. Proves that people are overconfident of todays technology. It is the Mary Jane's crews fault that the 4 were lost at sea. WHOEVER MARKS THIS COMMENT THUMBS-DOWN DOESN'T UNDERSTAND LOGIC.

  • Comment removed

  • @catguy43 - you were *once* whale *watching* (= standing idly around) and probably close to lifevests all the time?! These people were *working* and (!) *responsible* for their ship: They were first busy doing one thing, then *suddenly* (no visibility!) BLAM, so they needed to see what happened & care for their ship (check damage = check inside; try to save the ship & others, etc). That's exactly *not* overconfidence. - Sad to judge others based a) on little info (1 video!) & b) no expertise.

  • that went down fast, radar is limited in fog........

  • I thought radar works well in fog, but in heavy rain etc. you might get some noise.

  • the waves can hide smaller boats and some dont have radar..

  • @BulletProofNinja49, true, but a ship of that size should have a radar.

  • bravo à tout ls gens qui ont porter secours .......

  • There was to long waiting with lifesawingwear and boats, why? :(

  • damn... imagine being on that smaller vessel in that thick fog and all of a sudden a huge ship whose deck is so high you can't even see hits you.... like a huge wall slamming you...

scary... RIP to 4 lost souls

  • OMG I cant believe how fast that ship sank, I take it the bodies were never found. :( Sad fo the families.

  • I feel really bad for the 4 that died.

  • Im not a seeman...but i know that there are radars on ships...and someone is always looking at it...so this kind of things wont happend..were was that person doing then ? on both ships ?

  • I am a officer on large merchant ships and alas radar sets are only as good as the people using them. I dread navigating in and around banks of fog because you never know the standards of training the people on vessels around you have got.

  • Not All Ships Have Radars,And When A Ship Sinks In Under 2 Minutes It Justs Vanishes Off The Screen,And Even If They Did See It On The Radar Before Hand,They Wouldn't Have Hat Time To Manuvre The Ship Out Of The Way.

  • That's all very well, but in poor visibility a ship should be driven at a speet low enough that allows it to be brought to a complete stop withing half the distance that can be seen. Both ships were at equal fault here.

  • r.i.p.

  • what a tragedy. i cant believe how quickly that ship sunk. its hard to believe this accident couldn't have been prevented.

  • 4 is freezing meat..,rip

  • RIP to that four men.

  • @vascularcylinder yer RIP to those guys

  • har vi norsk tekst på youtube filmer nå?

  • thats crazy, and also sad that there was deaths

  • No, I think he's just retarded.

  • No, but there needs to be a village idiot. cheynecrt72 is fulfilling the role for all of Australia - he is the Australian idiot.

  • dont judge all of australia because of one person being a dick

  • I remember seeing this on the evening news, some 30 years ago.

  • Depend on the relationship between the captin and his ship i guess so .

  • Can you make the video a bit narrower please?

  • Horrifying footage

  • Cape Beaver has taken 4 seamen.

  • cape beaver :)))))

  • I don't want to be a fisherman.

  • ok dont be a fisherman

  • ok.

  • Remember...the captain has an obligation to go down with the ship.

  • That is no longer a rule of the sea. But the Captain should stay on board long enough to make sure as many of his crew as possible have abandoned ship.

  • Well actually, it never was a "rule", although some captains were known to make that choice. The Captain's duty is to make sure that as many of his passengers and crew as is possible get off before he himself leaves. Many Captains were lost that way because by the time is was their time to leave, their own avenue of escape had been lost.

  • well their fear was correct because it sank quick. they could have saved all of them if the other ships crew went faster and lowering the life rafts

  • Yeah, it struck me, too, that they dawdled when there was an obvious danger of sinking. There should be rules of the sea for this kind of thing.

  • I´m going to work on a cruise ship next week.. glad that my ship is the big one :-)

  • odd how they lost four but the dudes on the big ship didnt do squat till the lil ship was under the water... seriously i saw those lil floaty O shaped things next to the guy on the bow FRIGGEN THROUGH IT! thier ship sank they cant steal it from u

  • That's a horrible accident. And it sank so fast, too...

  • Norge : D

  • I thought bulk head doors and hatches were self closing much like fire control doors in large buildings. Self closing mechanisims are usaully activated by alarms or emergancy control anauncuator panel.

  • Another thing you have to think about is the size of the ship. That appears to be a pretty small vessel, so having a lot of watertight areas is probably not practical. Also, if the gash in the ship was large enough to rip open multiple compartments, then the doors closing automatically wouldn't have mattered much.

  • doen't ships have bulkheads and bulge compartments to slow the rate of sinking?

  • As a rule yes, but things can happen that can still cause sinking. Bulkheads dont close, pump not working, portholes or cargo hatch open that lets water in etc.

  • Looks like the engine room space was penetrated and can hold a lot of water, sufficient to collapsa other bulkheads.

  • they said it sank in 2 minutes. probably didnt have time to close all that stuff

  • yea nobody seems to get how quick this is

  • titanic had watertight bulkheads, what happened to her?

  • also, the sheer amount of damage that the bigger ship caused was probably enough to pop most of the hull out of alignment, so the doors may not shut, or damage the bulkheads themselfs, if it even had watertight chambers, you all must of seen the wave breaker type structure on the bow of a ship

  • Um, thats the fucking TITIANIC. This is a small fishing boat colliding with a ship probably only 1 fourth the size of the titanic.

  • no need to swear, was only making a point about the weaknesses of bulkheads and watertight doors, besides, it doesnt matter what hits a ship, its the amount of damage that is caused by the impact, that will decide if it sinks or not, you would find if a ship half its own size hit it, it would of still sunk.

  • AFAIK Titanic was designed to stay afloat if four of her watertight compartments were flooded. Guess how many flooded when it struck the iceberg? Five.

  • they forgot water can go through the roof

  • Part of the problem with being that close to such a rapidly sinking vessel is the reduction in buoyancy caused by the air rushing out from the ship. Very scary stuff, whoever was at fault.

  • dont let an OAP be captain...lol

  • col reg 19!!! someone was'nt looking at the radar, the fishing vessel had a better chance of changing course though.

  • Why didnt the crew of the big boat chuck life rafts in sooner--they only take seconds to inflate??

  • Obviously, we have two stupid crews who were not paying attention to their radar. THAT's WHAT RADAR IS FOR!!! Even if one crew's radar was not working...the other crew could have avoided this collision. Also...THAT'S WHAT FOG SIGNALS ARE FOR!!!

  • ship does not pull ppls down so much than they drown, especially so small ship. Thats an example how realty programs spread urban legends busted years ago...! :(

  • glad you saved 14 You only have maybe 5 or 6 minutes in that water temp

  • Mythbusters used a little boat,not a big sucker.

  • An acident at sea can happen to anyone. Not many people are strong enough to swim away from the suction of a sincking boat or ship. If they were wearing life jakets they may have had a chance.

  • hey they just did that on myth busters they said it was busted meaning it cant happen. the whirlpool sucksion that killed some chaps

  • that mythbusters sinking was soooo slow my poodle could have swam away from it!!!

  • Cape Beaver? What a name!lol

  • This "creates a whirlpool and pulls several men under" crap is a busted myth. There is no such thing even on this video. Idiot commentator!

  • False, it is not a busted myth. A ship, large enough, that has enough pockets of air, would lower the water density above the ship as air escapes, possibly causing a person or object to sink. This obviously would be different with different sized ships.

If you rely on Mythbusters as your source of proof, you're a fucking idiot. In no way has the myth ever been "busted." The Mythbusters episode is FULL of flaws and isn't even close to demonstrating a sinking like in this video.

  • Thank you for saying that....correct in each case, and the MYTHBUSTERS morons should be charged for spreading their disinformation.

  • Oh yea, you easybelive naives still believe Roswell, Mars Face and that Elvis is alive?! *sigh*

  • they are durr...lol

  • what?

  • actually you're both right. it DOESN"T create a whirlpool and suck people under. it DOES put a lot of air bubbles into the water that could lower a persons bouyancy.

  • i no, ur right mate, boats are safer than cars in terms of the stats, but theres alot less boats than cars. and when u stack a boat its a much bigger event isnt it? i mean, the thing sinks. but mainly im not exactly fish-like in the drink, so just hate the thought of being in that situation even tho it is very unlikely.

  • Tragic. Something interesting to take away from this is that the crew that made a break for the larger vessel died and the crew that aquired flotation devices survived.

Sometimes being a strong swimmer is not enough. Wow. Tragic.

  • How sad.

  • that would scare the shit outa me. dont do boats. like the way he says it "tried to stop"...boats are like trains, take bloody miles to stop. must be a weird feeling looking at wot ur about to hit for 2mins before u actually do.

  • I bet you ride in cars! Boats are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much safer than cars that your statement is NONsensical. Very few, very slow boats in a road bigger than all the land in the world vs american freeways! YIKES.

  • And UK is no better! I've driven in London (YIKES!!!!).

  • WHERE THE HELL IS THE BOW WATCH!!!! i mean jesus , fog, ships, ocean, all good reasons to have a god damn bow watch!!!!

  • "six seamen" :) sound funny how they say it

  • haha yah

  • wtf thats bad man!!!

  • Whirlpool :S

  • dam it =/

  • killybegs

  • Oh well, shit happens, I guess.
