it's a marketing tool to see where customers are looking first, or where they go to next.

Saying this is a "marketing tool" undersells its potential value. It is more broadly an "user experience" tool, used in research to see how people "look" at "stuff." It can potentially help users of any kind of interface have a better time at it. When you find what you need in a search, for example, and don't have to think too much about finding the information you need, it could be because a designer used information obtained from this tool.
