lol guys chill out i was just kidding im fully aware that many people dont know what 7/4 time is. thats why i was being sarcastic, and yes guthrie govan is amazing
yes, they are time signatures. this one is in 7/4 that's why it's entitled Sevens. trauma15 thinks everybody knows music theory so he calls you an idiot, poor guy.
don't pay attention to this idiots.. you are not idiot just becouse you don't know theory.. and I feel sorry for those guys who think that just becouse they know some music theory they're smarter than others. fuck'em
worst yet, he thought it was because the order on the album.. What a shame, he didn't notice the beautiful harmony in sevenths and fifths of each song respectively. what you say of 7/4 is also true! hadn't payed attention to that, bass tapping there drives me dumb ^^,
reening-No one answered your question! A time signature is a musical marking letting the musician know how the music is counted. Example: 3/4 time (also know as waltz or 3 time) is counted 123,123,123, etc along with the tempo. Most tunes are in 4/4 (also known as common time or 4)and counted 1234,1234, etc. This tune is in 7 and is counted 1234567, 1234567, etc. There is a lot more to time signatures, but this is a start and I hope it helps.
plus 7 or 5 isnt a time signature lol. The other guys described it better with 7/4 or 5/4. I wouldn't slag you off for this if you were nice to the guy who asked the question.
dude i was kidding, but i guess its hard to be sarcastic about such a thing anyways. but hey look i said just 7 insted of 7/4, obviously i was conscious of that, and my explanation is this, you can pretty much say its in 7, because, its over a 4 OR any other multiple of 4, it asymetrical time, or any other form of meter for that matter cannot be over 3, or 5, etc. plus, 7/4 and 7/8 are essentially the same, just you count 7 eight notes in 7/8, and its easier to read fast and difficult rhythms.
I hate to correct you...but 7/4 and 7/8 are not the same thing. One is seven quarter notes (7/4), and the other is seven eighth notes (7/8). If they were to be played at the same tempo/bpm, the 7/4 measure will be twice as long, because quarter notes are twice as long as eighths.
yeah, but you can have the duration of a quarter note equal the duration of an eighth note (just changing what gets the beat). of course, this is pointless when actually counting rhythm for a song like this which keeps the same rhythm (sense of beat) throughout the piece
Right...but that would mean changing the tempo...I was saying that an eighth note at say, 120 bpm, is going to be half as long as a quarter note at 120 bpm. If you start adding tempo switches while your explaining it, then all of it becomes pretty much irrelevant.
I don't see how the argument that John Petrucci is a lesser musician than Govan because he is "less versatile". In fact, that's is a rather absurd statement given the fact that Petrucci has studied classical, jazz, and blues, and that they show in his playing. Even more so, an artist is certainly not measured in the sum of styles they have mastered, but in their compositions. Thirdly, both Petrucci and Govan are AMAZING. Masterful composers/improvisers. End of story. Period.
@TheShredder89 Petrucci sux, as simple as that my friend. "Mr. Guitar" (I hope you know who we are talking about, right?), Jeff Beck, John McLaughlin, Jimi Hendrix, Pat Metheny, B.B.King, Guthrie Govan, Richie Kotzen, Wes Montgomery, Tommy Emmanuel... you get it. Those are Great Musician (and only after that, great guitarists).
No need to b politically correct about John Petrucci saying he is that good: clearly he is not. He is "average" compared to the true masters of the instrument.
@cavvgn "Petrucci sux". Sorry, but you lost my interest at that point. I like all the guitarists you mentioned, but are you seriously gonna sit there with a straight face and say that "Petrucci sux", given his track-record as a MUSICIAN?
@BBard889 Don't worry, I lost my interest in Petrucci too very soon. He ins't that "musical" like others can do, plus his solo works are a ripping off from the famous guys (Satriani, Morse, ...).
I don't have time for a not-so-good Steve Morse clone. I listen to Steve Morse and other musicians that know how to compose great music.
By the way, no offense intended to you. I'm sorry if it sounds rude, but it's really as simple as that. Bye
yh but guthrie hasnt released best selling albums world wide or been named guitarist of the year and doesn't have a fan base of hundreds of thousands across the world

yes, you mean with jordan rudess, the album is called 'an evening with john petrucci and jordan rudess' it's an excellent album btw, and shows more melodic side of john petrucci. i don't care that much if guthrie is more versatile than petrucci (I'd personally think so) but petrucci is versatile enough to blow people's mind that's it. Music is not competition and on this level it's a very subjective matter. both are fantastic, period.
do you realize you're touting the same argument that many would use to assert Green Day as better than John's own Dream Theater? If you're a true Petrucci & Dream Theater fan, you'd realize that there is many times no correlation between being an excellent musician and selling records.

ehmm.. I must say to you that that's why there are different genres.. Petrucci is in the progressive rock genre and Guthrie is nowhere near that genre, CC Deville belongs to the 80's rock genre, so how can Guthrie eat kids for breakfast when they're not even in his neighborhood (meaning genre)?? don't get me wrong Guthrie is an awesome player and I'm not putting him down in any way, but there might be a need to learn how to differentiate genres whenever talking about guitar players.
scenesfromamemory801 says "ehmm.. I must say to you that that's why there are different genres."
A good guitar player is a good guitar player, genre does not matter. Petrucci is probably amongst the most overrated players around these days, he is not really the worst, but he got nothing to offer when it comes to really good guitar playing.
does "john petrucci" have nothing to "offer" when it comes to good guitar playing?? haha. and overrated? he played 6 hours of his life EVERY day have put up instructional video and sold millions of albums around the world. you really are the dumbest idiot i have ever heard in here. thats just stupid. its very rare to even become close as good as john petrucci is. it cant be done without alot of practice and starting at a young age. ofc guthrie is better but also alot older. idiot.
on the contrary, Guthrie Govan was born December 1971, and John in July of 1967. I'm a big fan of John's playing, but he cannot touch Guthrie in terms of versatility.
In terms of melodic playing, I agree with you, although the two are pretty close. Check the vid 'guthrie plays who's best' where he emulates tons of guitarists. Don't underestimate John's control, though ;)
Petrucci is not a kid he has done some awesome work I guess you can't compare anyone they all are Different Guthrie and Petrucci two different people.

I saw Guthrie last night at a clinic in Richmond Hill Ontario. Seeing him just reaffirms what I already know(he's the best player). He was demonstrating Suhr guitars and amps, and some computer software. Guthrie is amazing and I can't wait for another CD.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this guys good, but he sounds as if he just sat around listening to Greg Howe, MacAlpine, Gilbert, Carlton some jazz lessons then you get this over and over again on every tune.
gauth obviously is the type of person to hear what he likes in other guitarists and subcontiously picks up/tunes in to whatever sounds good to him. Thats how influence works, and where would we be without that to progress us musically.
i also suggest Liquid Tension Experiment like universal mind, but all in fairness i perfer Govan over petrucci but dont get me wrong petrucci is amazing as well.
yeah im a huge fan of LTE, John Petrucci's style on those 2 albums was just the best - 2 of my favorites, I love Guthrie to pieces also, but some of my favorite playing is in LTE, but some of my other favorite playing is Guthrie - i'm not very comparitive, and i don't really like the stuff petrucci plays nowadays (bland anyone? just my opinion though, i also hate his EB guitars and his tone in his recent work)
immortalx50 - (i know this is going to get me bad feedback but i don't care) In all fairness, if you listen to a lot of Petrucci, and believe me, I have, then you start to see he is actually quite sloppy when he plays at extremely high speeds. Don't get me wrong, he's a great player, but if you look at it purely on technical ability, Guthrie is just as talented and he has an extremely clean technique. However, there's more to it than that, but Guthrie has feel too.
you don't have to listen to a lot of petrucci, just watch some improvisation with G3 and you'll see he's not very good at high speed lines... however in the early years of dream theater I think he was much better... (govan for presindet!)
Wow. I'm suprised you said that. I mean, I'm interested that that is your opinion. I am a huge fan of Guthrie and Petrucci, but I have to disagree with that. I think John really excells with fast, high-speed lines. Not to say Guthrie doesn't, but they're styles are different. John's my favorite player out there, but I think Guthrie definately is better at improv. That's probably why he hasn't been invited to a G3. He'd make everyone else look stupid!!!
I said that becouse when you hear petrucci going fast you hear a lot of doblenotes and missed notes, when he prepares one of his songs he can nail it pretty well but when improvising petrucci tends to do sloppy fast lines. Govan plays at high-speeds but always hit the notes correctly, if he doesn't go faster, is because he knows he will miss notes if he does. look for foxy lady with paul gilbert, satriani, and pretucci... and you'll see how petrucci uses the same licks over and over again.
i read that Paul wanted him in a G3 but something about Satch and JP kinda said no
probably because if they got Kotzen then either JP or JS wouldnt be in it and come on Satch started the g3 thing i think so i understand why he should be in it but JP come on enough lets see some faces that never really get seen such as Marty Friedman,Richie Kotzen,Goncalo Pereria,Greg Howe,Al Di Meola,Kiko Loureiro and Dave Martone
that might not be the only reason knowing that when kotzen was in poison, he stole the drummers girlfriend, how do you do that to a band mate? anyway... you do make some sense but not 100%
You get some real twats going to G3 concerts, in Britain anyway. I saw one with Robert Fripp, and because he did is synth stuff (from the guitar); amazing haronies and soundscapes, the twats started booing because ith didn't sound like guitar and he didn't widdle at all. It's sickening.
My bad. I meant to say that those single guitar 'twitches' on the breakdown that lead to the guitar solo aren't as loud on the record. Instead, you hear a hypnotic 'keyboard'ish sound.
It sounds much tenser (and better imo) here and on the Tone Merchants vid
As an accomplished musician I can confidently say that none of the "G3" players even come close to touching Govan's technicality, versatility, or plain out tastiness. Sorry Satriani fan's... someone is better believe it or not.
I think that's not true. Eric Johnson is also a monster in guitar playing and of course as a musician. Vai and Satch are way equal. Petrucci is a picking-robot, Gilbert is an One-Trick-Pony with a lot taste but he stucks in a Am, Em rut. Maybe his next Instrumental album will lead a way out.
I'm kinda glad, there are Vai, Satch, Petrucci and so on. Because without them Guthrie would sell out his style more quickly.
guthries still early in his carrer, hopefully he'll hit a point similar to holdsworths passing from prog rock to impossible fusion will truly go beyond to the untouchable realm of innovation few have ascended to, god knows we can always use a few more like that to keep us going forward.
Guthrie is only early in his carrer? Guthrie was getting offers to be signed to Shrapnel in the early nineties! His carrer is 15 or so years on so being 'early in his carreer' is a bit rich!
Nah, sorry this is the only one I got cos my arm hurt from holding my phone for seven minutes! I also just wanted to watch, he was awesome and a great guy.

I saw Guthrie last night at a clinic in Richmond Hill Ontario. Seeing him just reaffirms what I already know(he's the best player). He was demonstrating Suhr guitars and amps, and some computer software. Guthrie is amazing and I can't wait for another CD.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
this guys good, but he sounds as if he just sat around listening to Greg Howe, MacAlpine, Gilbert, Carlton some jazz lessons then you get this over and over again on every tune.

I used to have a cat before I heard this guy.
yessmancrimson 4 years ago 3
gauth obviously is the type of person to hear what he likes in other guitarists and subcontiously picks up/tunes in to whatever sounds good to him. Thats how influence works, and where would we be without that to progress us musically.
campwater 4 years ago
I listen to all those dudes...do the jazz lessons...and I'm no Guthrie Govan.
edgarallenhoe 3 years ago 3
Petrucci ia a picking robot? lol man, go listern to 'Suspended animation'! the album has its soul
and cant be described as a simple shred stuff...
though Petrucci sometimes goes insane and picks 2000000 notes per second(especially in DT), he's still great as a musican and composer
immortalx50 4 years ago
nah that album blew hard, listen to some of the earlier DT stuff if you want to see Petrucci at his best - Metropolis, Part II is pretty good
HopePoisoned 4 years ago
YES Hopepoisoned,
i also suggest Liquid Tension Experiment like universal mind, but all in fairness i perfer Govan over petrucci but dont get me wrong petrucci is amazing as well.
tenaciousjp 4 years ago
yeah im a huge fan of LTE, John Petrucci's style on those 2 albums was just the best - 2 of my favorites, I love Guthrie to pieces also, but some of my favorite playing is in LTE, but some of my other favorite playing is Guthrie - i'm not very comparitive, and i don't really like the stuff petrucci plays nowadays (bland anyone? just my opinion though, i also hate his EB guitars and his tone in his recent work)
HopePoisoned 4 years ago
immortalx50 - (i know this is going to get me bad feedback but i don't care) In all fairness, if you listen to a lot of Petrucci, and believe me, I have, then you start to see he is actually quite sloppy when he plays at extremely high speeds. Don't get me wrong, he's a great player, but if you look at it purely on technical ability, Guthrie is just as talented and he has an extremely clean technique. However, there's more to it than that, but Guthrie has feel too.
progmetaller91 4 years ago 2
you don't have to listen to a lot of petrucci, just watch some improvisation with G3 and you'll see he's not very good at high speed lines... however in the early years of dream theater I think he was much better... (govan for presindet!)
StringKiller 3 years ago
Alienxfb14 3 years ago 2
I said that becouse when you hear petrucci going fast you hear a lot of doblenotes and missed notes, when he prepares one of his songs he can nail it pretty well but when improvising petrucci tends to do sloppy fast lines. Govan plays at high-speeds but always hit the notes correctly, if he doesn't go faster, is because he knows he will miss notes if he does. look for foxy lady with paul gilbert, satriani, and pretucci... and you'll see how petrucci uses the same licks over and over again.
StringKiller 3 years ago
Petrucci's fast line are really forced and mechanical, a real kind of 'cramming it in' sort of thing rather than a musical outpouring.
Lesia44 3 years ago
Petrucci is boring...he stands in one spot, plays his songs, then leaves...wtf is that...?
InVaZi0n 3 years ago
what you want him to do ? fucking break dance ?
drix01 3 years ago
and what do you do when you play? jump the rope? or maybe do push ups while playing yer guitar?
scenesfromamemory801 3 years ago
thats why they dont want Richie Kotzen on G3
i read that Paul wanted him in a G3 but something about Satch and JP kinda said no
probably because if they got Kotzen then either JP or JS wouldnt be in it and come on Satch started the g3 thing i think so i understand why he should be in it but JP come on enough lets see some faces that never really get seen such as Marty Friedman,Richie Kotzen,Goncalo Pereria,Greg Howe,Al Di Meola,Kiko Loureiro and Dave Martone
there are so man great players
kotzen081 3 years ago 2
that might not be the only reason knowing that when kotzen was in poison, he stole the drummers girlfriend, how do you do that to a band mate? anyway... you do make some sense but not 100%
scenesfromamemory801 3 years ago
what dose that have to do with G3? besides i think every one is mature enough respect one anthers love one including Kotzens
you do make some sense but that was like 15 years ago is every one going to think he steels drummers ladies or something?

g3 would be great exposure for guthrie, though to be on the g3 tour you need to bring a large fanbase.
thelordofthestrings 4 years ago
yeah, thats what sucks. He could play circles around Satriani and Vai.
Walls1441 4 years ago
You get some real twats going to G3 concerts, in Britain anyway. I saw one with Robert Fripp, and because he did is synth stuff (from the guitar); amazing haronies and soundscapes, the twats started booing because ith didn't sound like guitar and he didn't widdle at all. It's sickening.
gregpaszynski 4 years ago
Yeah, I feel so sorry for Fripp. Every time I read a fan review of Fripp in G3, there is a complaint about how boring his set was.
I personally love sound scapes. A lot of shit heads do not have the patience to listen to Fripp's soundscapes and digest the nuances of the music.
prasiddha 4 years ago 2
he couldn't do G3. he'd make the other two look bad.

At 3:01, the song goes into HARD ROCK HEAVEN!!!!!
I wonder why Govan didn't add that extended break-down section in the song Sevens in the album...he only does that live.
prasiddha 4 years ago
that is on Sevens on the album, it's just that the solo is different
progmetaller91 4 years ago
My bad. I meant to say that those single guitar 'twitches' on the breakdown that lead to the guitar solo aren't as loud on the record. Instead, you hear a hypnotic 'keyboard'ish sound.
It sounds much tenser (and better imo) here and on the Tone Merchants vid
prasiddha 4 years ago
Ah, well i'm glad i was at music live when guthrie was there anyway!

I chose not to go to music live this year.....sooo pissed

Oh I can totally play as good as him and better........in my dreams.
Fishies125 4 years ago
As an accomplished musician I can confidently say that none of the "G3" players even come close to touching Govan's technicality, versatility, or plain out tastiness. Sorry Satriani fan's... someone is better believe it or not.
MasterZachary 4 years ago 4
fancy seeing you here...
noahisum 4 years ago
I think that's not true. Eric Johnson is also a monster in guitar playing and of course as a musician. Vai and Satch are way equal. Petrucci is a picking-robot, Gilbert is an One-Trick-Pony with a lot taste but he stucks in a Am, Em rut. Maybe his next Instrumental album will lead a way out.
I'm kinda glad, there are Vai, Satch, Petrucci and so on. Because without them Guthrie would sell out his style more quickly.
sa7sul 4 years ago
holdworth can touch only a few aspects of guthries playing-guthrie is just too compitent in EVERY style
tallica777 5 years ago
guthries still early in his carrer, hopefully he'll hit a point similar to holdsworths passing from prog rock to impossible fusion will truly go beyond to the untouchable realm of innovation few have ascended to, god knows we can always use a few more like that to keep us going forward.
Baustrophedonic 5 years ago
Guthrie is only early in his carrer? Guthrie was getting offers to be signed to Shrapnel in the early nineties! His carrer is 15 or so years on so being 'early in his carreer' is a bit rich!
louisguitarslinger 4 years ago
I'm hoping this guy will one day be on the G3 tour with Satch, Vai etc. or maybe he's too good?...
UncleRob199 5 years ago
and going on to the G3 would prove what? that he's as good as Satch/Vai/Yngiwe?
beatallica 5 years ago
I would just like that to happen cos I enjoy all of those guitarists music. Prove? The G3 is a concert, not a court case, as far as i'm aware.
