  • It is only $140 for students, and only $250 for non-students for personal use. So, I have no idea where you got this $2,500 from. May be you are thinking about Matlab?

  • Can this graph y=-1^x?

  • @TheLennyXD Mathematica does this for breakfast.

  • @Gytax0 Haha ok. Absolutely nothing I have seen has been able to give me any insight on this so far, not even google :P

I may have to try it.

  • @TheLennyXD Try WolframAlpha.

  • @Gytax0 It didn't get it right lol. Its wrong! :O!

  • @TheLennyXD It can't get it wrong. Maybe you didn't type in clear enough?

    Typing ' -1^x ' isn't equal to typing ' (-1)^x ' .

  • @Gytax0 Yeah I know, but it only plotted a few points. For example, (-1)^2/3 = 1, but it didn't plot it. But I guess It cant plot every root, otherwise you'll be getting a lot of points for the one thing, eg. (-1)^1/10 has 10 different answers. I'm not sure which ones it chooses to plot. It's not "wrong" but its not "right" either.

  • Very powerful tool

  • Agree with almost everyone here. I live in Ecuador. Minimum wage is at $270. Paying $120 for a (standard student) licence is a bit step for me. I'll pay it, because I believe it is a very powerful tool, but nonetheless, for students, it should be free.

  • This should be free for students and people that are not using it to make money. Companies that use this to make money should have to be the ones that pay for it.

  • they say powrfull 1000 times

  • the home edition costs about £250

  • would love to get the full version to play around with it, but i simply can't afford 2.5k :(

  • hello, may i ask how to use mathematica to create autograms such as ''This sentence contains only three a's, three c's, two d's, twenty-five e's, nine f's, four g's, eight h's, twelve i's, three l's, fifteen n's, nine o's, eight r's, twenty-four s's, eighteen t's, five u's, four v's, six w's, two x's, and four y's.'' ?

can it work in french too?

i already installed mathematica but still not very good at it...

  • in europe you need 3250€ or 150€ for student edition

  • one word: keygen

  • I recently noticed they released a home version for $300. It's a little more expensive than the student version but requires no proof of enrollment and is still fully functional. I'm going to pick up a copy I think.

  • My god if only Isaac Newton had this

  • @sharpezor had he? :D:D:D

  • @sharpezor if Newton had mathematica we'd probably have colonized the entire universe by now

  • @sharpezor a bit paradoxical,don't you think?

  • This program is way over my head (I'm just learning the basics of programming right now in Delphi. lol). But I was curious, I've heard of a new (or fairly new) method of programming called "procedural" programming. Does Mathematica do that, assist in that, or have any relevance to the procedural method?

If anyone could answer this question it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • I was wondering if this would help me understand math better. Any answers ?

  • Just downloaded it with the uni licence :)))

  • Mathematica is just too awesome. I fell in love with it when I was in my bachelors. I use it as a hobby and of course in studies. Long live Maths.

  • Elaborate.

  • Mathematica is fucking amazing. I use Mathematica 7 on a daily basis and nothing comes close to the awesomeness of it. The 'Manipulate' feature first blew me away.

  • I want to buy it!! how can I?

  • Mathematica is better than Maple 13, my university makes both software available through its library computers, and if you go through Graduate Electrodynamics, you will realize that Mathematica 7.0 is far superior than Maple 13. Try graphing elliptic functions, if you don't believe me. Oh, and to the dumbass encouraging illegal downloads of this great software, on a wolfram page, where is you half of the brain?

  • It really doesn't matter because they don't spend as much time securing their software from broke college students who like math as they do making complex software.

I was only using Maple for some really simple applications, nothing too complicated. That's probably why I liked it. I can see how mathematica is the better option if you're doing some really complex stuff.

  • I don't give thumbs up/down to peoples' comments. It might have been from the individual who wanted the torrent for mathematica. I must say that it's interesting to see how smart these people are with making an advanced math program, but how they don't want to spend a lot of time "securing" it.

Now sure if you're making fun of my taste in music. If you want to see what I like, click on my screen name. I posted a bunch of my favorite songs on there.

Whether you like me or not,

    Cheers

  • There wasn't a need to deploy the software with that much security because copiers will always prevail, eventually. However, it's possible to get this quality software at a discount and if that's not enough then there are decent OpenSource options such as Maxima. Furthermore, piracy has a degree of risk involved - it's more likely to pick up viruses from stolen software than it is to acquire them from convoluted security holes within any operating system.

  • @TLucretiusCarus

"decent OpenSource options such as Maxima."

    I laughed hard and loud.

  • i have this but i havent a licence :( can anybody tell where i can find

  • Comment removed

  • Is this as good as Maple 13

  • Heh, i didn't know you could factor "one less than tiger"

  • Great product. $2500 for a single license isn't exactly a strategy to encourage broad adoption by the masses though.

  • @dixonpete

The mass is not the target audience.

  • @dixonpete It took years of hard work, research, and also a lot of MONEY to build a powerful program like Mathematica. The price may seem ridiculous. But, for a hard-core researcher who uses Mathematica ever day, the price is actually reasonable.

  • @3li3li3li "It took years of hard work, research, and also a lot of MONEY to build a powerful program like Mathematica." Well, and now ppl are downloading it for free on the internet :-)

  • @oringent "People" can do what the hell they want to do. But, this doesn't mean it's alright to steal others products for free. This is like having a business with no profit. Do wish this for yourself? I don't think so. So, don't do it to others.

  • @3li3li3li I never implied that I approved of this. I was just calling you on your naive comment. cheers

  • @3li3li3li your a bit trapped in the world of money. google and watch Zeitgeist: Addendum and educate yourself so you dont look like such a capitalist.

Profit is the worst thing to work toward. The guys at wolfram are math enthusiasts... The company only organized and directed those people to make a profit from their combined efforts and interests...the same could have happened without that profit motive. None of the people that discovered mathematics did it for money.

  • @cindytg87 I think you may be right about the people at mathematica would have done it without money. Math is self rewarding in its self.

  • @cindytg87 Yeah man I watched a video on youtube once and it really opened my eyes to the corporate pig dogs ruling over our capitalist state! Just wondering though, did you buy your pc with money or fairy dust?

  • @lozleigh oh yeah, and the two 24" monitors came from a government stimulus check. so those where pretty much free also. any other questions?

  • @caradi42 Yeah that sounds about right. I lol'd and have no further questions.

  • @dixonpete They used to charge $240,000 for the Cray 2 version. That's right almost a quarter of a million dollars for a single license. And that's in 1985 dollars!

  • @dixonpete That's what torrents are for. To stop people standing on the shoulders of giants and holding everything out of reach of the general public. This tool is world changing...why put a price tag. Damn profit motive. They should just make it open-source and continue selling there educational programs to show people how to use it...But of course that's a horrible idea...the software would double in power in just a few years of it where O-S, seeing how incredible the demonstrations project is.

  • @dixonpete Dude I was able to get the student addition for $12!

  • @dixonpete

The broad masses have no use for it.

However, the poor-yet-ambitious know where to look on the internet. ;)

  • Beautiful
