But really its their own fault. Sad or not. They spent $10 MILLION on the project and didn't account for wind drift?? didn't have any measure of controlling the drag?? I mean seriously thats not even science. Its common sense.
@grimtango5280 you don't account for it, you just don't make the stupid mistake of launching in high winds. You look at a weather report before hand and cancel if it's too windy. Pretty simple. Balloonists do it all the time.
Wow..it just looked like there was no way it was going to get off the ground. With the angle the balloon was at prior to takeoff I could tell when they released it it was going almost straight down, just too much wind.
BLAST was launched successfully in Antarctica using a mobile crane and with no obstructions in the area. These guys clearly didn't think things through.
Ha, Ha, The US can sucessfully launch multi-billion dollar shuttles with millions of working parts with an almost 100% success rate and we can't even let a fucking balloon go!
It's also sad to see so much stupidity at work. What the hell are the cars doing there. It's Australia for crying out loud. If there's one thing there's plenty of, it's wide open space.
Just a scratch, superficial damage at most. Probably got it off the nest day.

I'd say employing engineers and techs and purchasing materials is constructive. They probably should have employed a real balloonist though ;)

I've heard they blamed 'strong gusts of wind' for the accident. But it's clear that crane was turning, and the instrument was not clamped properly.
But hey, that's right, blame the wind, it's all the wind's fault.
Idiots.
