  • I didn't know this was techno till right now. We just thought it was plain house....guess we were to busy dancin our asses to notice. You could maybe in the neck out on the dancefloor RIGHT NOW if the DJ throws this on.....GENIUS!

  • How come you don't die when you step in to the lava?

  • Whats the game on the screen, i remember playing something similar on either Amiga 500 or Comordor 64....

  • trying to find album with this as penultimate track arms of loren as last track PLEASE HELP!!!!

  • take some mdma and shut the fuck up!

  • @appoNo1 as long as your providing ;-)

  • Techno, House, whatever - this song got people on the dance floor, that's for sure!!

  • search for acid brass strings of life first one is the origignal.

  • Has anyone heard the brass band cover of this track on the new Freeview ad? It is actually pretty good. Does anyone know where I can get it?

  • So much shit getting blabbed about this. Folk should just recall the friendships they forged and the times they had with this unforgettable track in the background of it all.

  • Great record, shit video. Whats death and destruction got to do with strings of LIFE!!!

  • @bigapplerecords

This song fits Marathon's vibe pretty well actually.

  • i had the original 'back in the day' until some Motherfucker stole. Hope he burns in Hell for all eternity the Bastard >:(

  • this is not tekno at all....dumb-asses its house and its chi-town house not detroit....

  • @mrdrumrman1 I can see how some people may label it as House but it was created by Derrick May (Rhythim Is Rhythim was his pseudonym) who was from Detroit. He certainly labelled it as Detroit Techno. Derrick May is also most closely associated with the birth of Detroit techno.

  • People killing each other (even in a video game) is the most inappropriate imagery to associate with this music.

  • cant beat Detroit

  • Comment removed

  • Ok so I have known this song for many years now and I really like it, but never bothered to find out the story behind it. I took the time to watch May's interview and sure he may call it techno, but almost every aspect of this song fits better in the House music genre...

Yea they originated at the same time, etc, etc. But the more I listen the more like House it sounds :)

  • Yeh boy, this is a straight four aces and Dungeons track, bring in some Frankie Knuckles and We R E, everyting nice. Them times there due to come back round soon for another generation...WHISTLES

  • Derrick May.

  • It is what it is

  • i wish people could learn to make there point or disagree , without disrespecting each other!!!

  • so where did the orchestral hit come from?

  • @acedaface954, you cannot remake this tune. Many peope have tried and totally failed.

  • i'm going to remake this when i get the chance.

  • Just to put this argument to rest this was made using an Ensoniq Mirage with factory sample disks for the Piano & Strings with Roland TR-909, TR-808, TR-707 and TR-727 on the drums.

Juan Atkins used an Ensoniq Mirage to make Good Life aswell so it's obviously a popular machine with the Techno boys back in the 80's

  • @shadovoid ooooh, name dropping a novation bass station. I'm so scared of your rack mount army! link the article or GFY.

  • @shadovoid how ignorant are you? You can clearly hear a sampler. there were samplers in the 80's. thanks for playing troll. FYI. Samplers are machines. there have been hardware samplers for quite some time now.... House music comes to mind which also predates techno. FOR all of you wondering out there. this is a CLASSIC detroit techno anthem. it is written by derrick may, one of the Belleville Three which also includes juan atkins and kevin saunderson. Midwest Techno 4 life!

  • Comment removed

  • techno. This was made with orchestral samples. The defected release is a remix and came years later. I've been listening to house and techno for 16 years, and I know my shit. Ask an Oldskooler and get an education!

  • why label it house or techno...it suprised me wen i found out it was made in 1987 cos it was the tune of the 1989 rave generation in the uk... most ppl do belive techno was invented by the belguim massiff...but know your shit b4 you talk shit!!!

if the man himself says its techno then its techno..

The tune killed enuff dance floors back then!!

    wikid track!

big ups derrik, richie rich and all the other pioneers of house/techno

  • Doesn't matter what you think it is, it's Detroit.

  • lipa

  • La techno s'est faite un lifting aujourd'hui :-s

Mais il n'y a rien à dire! Juste qu'effectivement, c'est plus musicale que la techno de Berlin en fait..

    C'est quoi cette vidéo? -_-

  • Holy hell, Marathon and Derrick May! Nostalgy feat nostalgy.

  • i remember the f*ckin queue outside a certain shop in tottenham court rd (cant remember its name)

just to get a pair of wallabes lol

    oi oi ;-0)

    wicked upload m8tey !

  • @FunkystuffDj you mean MASH.

    expensive shop.

  • Could it be the first tech-house track ever?

  • Totally not tech-house. But I get your perspective that it contains an organic vibe while being totally synthetic in its production.

  • I'm kind of surprised I got 2 thumbs down, it was a bit of a tongue in cheek comment.

  • the best music always defies genre its latin jazz also

  • i see how this could be called house i also see how it could be called techno. one thing for sure it kicks ass.

  • @thesnobsupreme house is a genre of techno. derp

  • @rageindustries1 NO FUCKN WAY!!! house was here like 20 years before techno came along ;) its too totaly diferent things ;-)

  • awesome track, thanks Detroit big up derrick may!

  • I just spent about an hour with a friend of mine on youtube trying to find an example of genuine techno ... this is it. Thanks for the posting, and for those of us that have been listening to this stuff since it was born, the "labels" are self-creations. It just sounds different, and we know why. =)

  • @ilyahna but really if you go see a techno dj more than likely its not gona sound anything like this

  • who gives a fuck what label you give to this music

  • (I know this comment was forever ago, but...)

You're right, but it is useful to have genre names so people describe their preferences and such. I get pissed when people get it totally wrong, but I couldn't care less if they just don't know the names. For example, if I go to a track labeled Techno (my favorite) and get Trance (the worst), I'm pissed.

  • No Creeps Please

  • well I saw Derrick in '98 in Melbourne Australia, and even then it was "old school detroit techno".

so im going to fill in all you ppl that dont get it, the genre has aged, some would say like a fine wine others like an old sock.

but from here on in this genre will be know as "PRE-school detroit techno" (this joke might go over the heads of ppl that call preschool KINDERGARTEN - but i care not about the oppinions of those that dont understand english)

  • I don't understand how one connects techno and house music with nationalism, youtube is really a place to be and comments to read.

  • everyone has their own opinion you all need to check out the modulations cd derrick may, juan atkins, kevin saunderson, frankie bones are all interviewed and explain thecno and house. oh and by the way strings of life is detroit techno.

  • Love 3:14 to 3:50...

But music is music people... Who's to say who is entitled to it, has the "exclusive rights", because it's "theirs?"

Music is music... It belongs to everyone, that's the point of it...

I'm kind of new on the in-depths and history on techhno, and house...

I've only heard something like this one other time... I'm not familiar with it, but it' definitely a learning experience... I like it...

    So... Dark in a way.

  • The string of life, IS the energy that drove acid, techno and electro to life, in a deep house music movement. What's next???? SSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOO DEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPP!

  • Someone please define techno and house!!!

  • music with a 4/4 beat at around 125-135 bpm, house being more influenced by disco and techno being more stripped down and mechanical sounding, originating from detroit and chicago respectively

  • Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of subgenres have been built....so all of you ppl who dont know shit about the music...do your homework, trust me i know ive been goin to raves for 12-13yrs and threw 2 myself in Detroit 1998

  • love the video by the way!!

  • well on my opinion its sounds like Electric House, cos is not strong enought for techno but considering that they both come from the same place, it a very close call, plus is an awesome tune that started all the electric genre!!! LOL

  • Europeans no fuck all about dance music and Rhythm. its all jazz.

  • lol americans know fuck all about the real spirit of rave my friend

    fuck you all

  • thats silly. europeans have been recycling american dance music for almost forty years now. european raves are just after parties for soccer fans.

  • i could say you're wrong and tell you why but - 'european raves are just after parties for soccer fans' tells me your too far removed from sense that i would need shit loads more than my 500 character count

    american 'raves' suck dick

  • how many american raves (in america) have you been to?

and equally how many european raves has the guy your arguing with been to?

and more to the point why would anyone from the rest of the world care?

if you like a rave then its a good rave for you, and more power to you for having a good time.

    peace

  • nah man im not talking about raves im talkin about the music

plus the general atmosphere thats always been involved over here... and the pills

  • we inspired eachother back-n-forth... we may have started the house/techno music, but those innovaters were inspired by people like depeche mode and kraftwerk... how far we wanna go back?

  • Who cares what bloody genre it is, it's a great piece of music. Why do people care so much what narrowly defined group it sits in? Isn't it possible for it to straddle the line of several? Classic track wherever it sits.

  • Comment removed

  • derrik may and kevin saunderson invented techno...this is techno....

  • this is chicago house........techno was invented in belgium and was first released on the R&S lable, this is HOUSE not TECHNO

  • nope, it was the creation of techno

  • it was actually invented in detroit look it up!

  • it's a techno track, and a piece of art... inteligent energy... the way techno should sound

  • hey you idiots techno and house developed at the same time with the same influences; their almost identical and differentiating the two is pointless on certain tracks like this one unless you're an insufferable genre nerd. since its such a widely used track, it really doesn't matter whether SoL is house or techno. it fits just fine in a set of either.

  • big up doom lol

  • this IS house ffs, hear the BPM

  • this was always played with the house mixes but technically, its techno. look at the derrick may interviews where he himself admits it ! you guys cant go off what u think it is. you either know it or u dont and obviously many people dont. this is my generations music kiddies

  • why are people such fucking idiots ??? im from chicago ! i dont care how long u been spinning tracks... MATE. we invented house music !!! derrick may is 1 of the early pioneers of techno and the creator of the song. go see the youtube interviews where he ADMITS IS GOD DAMN FUCKING TECHNO you god damn fucking idiots. i guess u know more than the creator of the song. now what ? say something ! i dare u !!

  • House did come from the Chi...but Techno was and always be from Detroit...and if ppl knew what they was saying..., but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of subgenres have been built....

  • to the earlier comments, it doesn't matter whether it is house or techno, they both came out of the same scene, and are forms of electronic dance music, breaking genres down too much defeats the purpose of music, you are supposed to enjoy it, not pick it apart. Lighten up, people.

  • jajjaja.. wft..shadow warrior???...doom??

this is not techno..but i like it

    ;D

    House music.. italo

  • wtf

  • wow sydneysmooth21 totally fucken pwned...

This would be genre-defining techno... aka you couldn't be more wrong. Nice work though.

  • i thought it was house. but i guess im wrong.....

  • ha ha ha

  • woo ha this was a rokin toon kick it daddio...and the dood who said this aint techno this was the fisrt style of techno dood...88 89 was where it was at then techno morphed into wot it is now

  • i love it so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lol

    seriously

--- guys get a life ^^^^^ this is NOT techno?!

this is one of the hythmn of detroit techno , fkin donk !!

  • look at the derreck may interviews on you tube where he himself admits its techno. i guess u know more than the creator of the song. he should go to your house and personally congratulate you for knowing so much

  • This is Detroit Techno dickhead

  • @blandyFTM its house, its on defected records under a house record

  • @blandyFTM Haha - the band who made it is British.

  • @HighAcuity are you insane? This is detroit techno, and is a part of early techno history. Techno and house are from the Midwest portions of the USA. That's historical FACT.

  • @teknokid303 My bad, you're right. This particular song is from a Detroit Techno artist.

  • @blandyFTM

It's made by an Detroit techno legend but it's not techno dickhead.

  • @echtwaarisdatzo I don't think I've ever heard Derrick May (the legend you refer to) refer to 'House music' for any of his tracks.

  • @blandyFTM why the man gotta be a dickhead, if you understand one this song was done before Techno was added to Detroit music, and one other thing Derrick May is my friend and he is from Detroit and Chicago(moms still live here to this day), this is a Detroit House Song, facts are very important

  • technically this is techno ! i thought it was house at first because it was always in the house mixes until i did some research. derrick may is from detroit and one of the pioneers of techno.

  • Sydneysmooth21 OH MY!

This is a mix by the original artist, its how it is... and IT IS 100% TECHNO.

Do your research before flaming people.

    You couldnt be more wrong.

Please... Please keep your comments to yourself in future...

    And "oremarin" Great post :-)

  • Ha Ha Ha Ha sorry to burst your bubble but this is techno, it was to become one of techno's classic anthems, the seminal track 'strings of life' was named by Frankie Knuckles. It was played in the Detroit and Chicago house scene. But May actually classed it as Techno. It was actually and accident how this was made.

  • cral craig played it last night fucking class

  • superb tune, one of my favourites - nice imagery with marathon - a classic game

  • more like a coming-out from house with a deeper sound.

  • It's too bad that now there's a huge Heroin outbreak,in Suburbs out an inside of Detroit.

  • Minie ozhin rabitza eta pesny

  • Why isnt there a video for Nude Photo....:(

  • Remember Echos anyone?

They used to loop the intro over and over - RUSH!!!!!!

  • F****** TUNE - In the warhouses around London when this first reared it's beautiful head.

A couple of doves and here we go!

  • dumb-ass video... but the song is beautiful beyond words!

  • superb

  • goosebumps, awsome memories, tune

  • Makes me want to get on 5 and snort some nitrate in a wharehouse in london with a pair of cowboy boots on and wanting to tell everyone how many ive had and where im from.

  • Totally agree with the hairs salute! We love it!! SO many happy memories!

  • Quality..... sounded great in the orbit chill out room, still makes the hair on the back of my neck salute..........

  • frickin amazing.

    i'm livin out my youth.

(why is there a doom like film goin on?)

  • I think its supposed to be a metaphor for Detroit Techno; a musical genre ahead of its time which originated in a place of violence and industrial decay. In this light, DOOM fits perfectly - but I would prefer something different instead.

  • This song changed my life. Michigan sucked except for the music.

  • so much better without singing on it

  • one of the best songs evvveerrr made peece x

  • HEY! Can someone please link me to a free decent quality mp3 download? Thanks!!!!

TOoo fucking smoooth - trippin to this track :)

  • YT music clips and mp3's are for previewing music only! If you love this music, why don't you look for Strings of Life's Vinyl reissue or the Innovator CD album? Not only does it give support to the artist, but you'll get a fuller impact of the music then "decent quality" trash mp3's can ever offer you.

  • Derrick May or May not. But when he does he is on fire. Going to see him this weekend at Digital in Newcastle and he WILL

  • WAY FREAKIN HOT

  • This is the perfect FUSION of Techno & House, and why Tech-House has made a such a big comeback. Chi-Town and Detroit are blood brothers. There is always a slice Chicago in Mayday's music....

  • i love this track, its true techno

  • great tune. nice video too... is that derek may with a camera taped to his helemt bazookering his way around new york?

  • The best version!

  • Classic anthem, respect to Derrick May.

  • it's from 1987 year :)

  • Is this Marathon..? The mac game?

  • sure the fuck is

  • dont you get tired of clasifie this timeless theme?

  • ^_^

  • i like some late 80,s early 90,s techno but it pales in comparison to house.sorry detroit!your just a chicago wannabe !

  • DETROIT TECHNO. nothing like that, NOTHING.

  • This is one of the great classics of house music. The crescendo on this baby is wicked. People should rediscover tunes as timeless as this.

  • old school respect

  • Excuse me folks, but just a bit of clarity! i'm from detroit so this my culture. Detroit techno Godfathers Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Eddie Fowlkes took the ball from Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder and kept running with it. House originated in chicago thanks to Farley, Badboy Bill, Julian Perez at WBMX, WGCI. I helped organize clubs back in 85-86. Learn the history and one love!

  • You also forgot Derrick May used to visit Chicago all the time. His relatives stayed in Chicago and herd the House sound. Detroit answer to House music was Techno(House).

  • what 'bout Kevin Saunderson?, he's oft' considered one of the "big three"

  • well said m8 i am from london but listened to alot of early juan atkins , knuckles and derek may interviews so many people have not got a clue about where it all came from

  • class tune scotland loved this in early 90s!

  • Don't you remember the first vinyl releases of this stuff from detroit with the tagline, "Techno - The House Sound of Detroit" ?

    ;-)

  • techno ? im from chicago and this was always considered house and played along with house music.

  • techno my ass ! this is house baby !!!

  • tune!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Techno FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • awesome awesome track.

  • cos with the rocket launcher u only have to hit it once not ten times. great tune by the way. don't know how much it goes with the game tho

  • Met the legend that is D May in sankeys in Manchester and he was sooooo lush. Danny Tenaglia is the maybe the next best thing at Sankeys and on there this Sunday 23/09/07, Loved D carter at Crobar in Chicago and Jaydee at Escape with he's plastic dreams and went stupid to a set played by Frankie knuckles at Groovejet in Miama who do you love? x

  • My favourite tune of all time..... Disco biscuits and all..............

  • Man, this is one BIG house tune!!! fucking class!!

  • Ah strings a unique Detroit piano tune deeeep!Even Goldie said this was a huge influence on him.P.s to all the brits anyone see eastenders and moe in an Acid house t shirt scary.

  • one of the biggest tunes in ibiza in 1989 along with little louis french kiss.....MASSIVE.!!

  • Top piano tune ever!!

  • the innovator, the legend, derrick may, this is detroit techno.

  • Yessir!

  • i dont see why every moron always uses a rocket launcher in Quake, Doom, and Marathon

  • Well, lemme break it down fer ya -- you with small gun, me with big gun. I kill your ass first, you die second, you leave gibs third. :)

  • Detroit techno rules!!!!

  • what's so great about this song? I really don't get it

  • believed to be first main influence of techno

  • bit l8 to reply lol but the reason you dont get this type of music is cos you listen to radiohead not dissing your choice of music but you cant expect to undertstand one of the most influencial pieces of music in electronic music when you listen to a band that is loved by the masses sorry but that is just the way it is

  • was that directed at me? Huh? I never said I didn't "get it," I simply said that I don't get the big deal. So what if I listen to Radiohead. I listen to a lot of stuff. I hate the idea (which I am seeing more and more) that if someone listens to Radiohead, then that's all they listen to.

  • sorry m8 just checked out your age at 14 you would not get the type of music and it prob sounds shit to you but to those who were around when this music came out we understand how influencial this type of music has been to the industry. sorry about radiohead i don't know why but they are just one of those bands that wind me up Peace m8

  • No offence mate but that's bollocks. There's no age limit to understanding electronic music, look at the Martinez Brothers- proof if ever it was needed that music transcends generational boundaries.

Your comments about not being able to understand this if you like radiohead is also ridiculous.

  • BEST MARATHON VID EVAR!!!

  • luv this tune

  • The greatest house track of all time!!

  • wickedest tune ever...big thanks for sharing this gem :O)
