I remember Turk Van Lake from the 1962 Benny Goodman tour of the USSR> I translated for the band. A lot of water under the bridge...but jazz lives on. Turk was a wonderful musician and a wonderful person. may God rest his soul in peace
Turk Van Lake looked like a class act... and his rhythm guitar is on the money... i wonder if he ever told you anything about his technique or approach to guitar...
I used to take lessons from Turk sometime around 1981. He was as nice a guy and as excellent a teacher as he was a player... I was very lucky to have learned from him
one should be so lucky... his rhythm guitar work is as classy as his demeanor on stage... what did he say about his approach to chords, voicings and voice leading...
@CrackerJackLee I never saw him play guitar at lessons; we only did theory. He was always slightly askew that someone would even ask for theory lessons by the 1980's!. We used to talk about why inversions would have an impact to the ear, etc. Turk was an amazing guy!!. The heirs to the throne went Turk>Chuck Wayne>Peter Prisco>Ron Naldi
The great art of Rhythm Guitar, what a terrific video clip, just goes to show that it does not always have to be fast and loud for it to swing.great to see Don Joseph and Turk Van Lake. Many Thanks for this
The great art of Rhythm Guitar. great to see these clips of the late Turk Van Lake.pity there is so little of his recorded work around.(a couple of Sarah Vaughan and little else)nice to see Don Joseph also. Thank you so much for these clips.
There was only one Don Joseph. A poet of the horn. I'm very thankful for every second I got to play with him. I did not realize it at the time but every gig with him was like a graduate class in understated improvising. Plus...that sense of humor!! :-)
Don Joseph was a poet! HArd to explain what it sounded like sitting in a room hearing him play up close. I miss that experience so much!
