these commercials suck hard! totally condescending! the idea at the heart of them is correct and more education is needed in having a healthy lifestyle but do it in a way that doesn't make you want to change the channel as soon as the advert comes on!
I don't see this as anti-game propaganda, or whatever you want to call it. Yes, I sit on my ass a lot of the time and play video games, but I also go out skiing and running. I do yoga and I dance to my iPod when nobody's watching.
This advert may mostly use video games as an example, but the whole point is to have balance.
It's kinda ironic, too, because the UK is most of the reason I watch TV. Because they have Doctor Who. And Robin Hood. And stuff. Makes sense to me.
While videogames only made a small appearance in this clip, the rest of the Change4Life campaign seems to equate video gaming as the reason why kids are unhealthy.
Interesting, really... More than half of guys I know play videogames, and have played games since they were kids. Less than half of them are overweight or otherwise unwell. To me it seems that this is strictly an American problem, nothing I have to worry about.
seriously people get over it. its not as if theyre saying "GAMES WILL KILL YOUR CHILDREN", theyre just trying to promote better living. and besides what do most disconnected parents THINK their children do with their time? video games.
I really hate those storys about people playing Diablo or World of Warcraft, and getting so obsessed with it they kill themselves. You never hear about people getting married and having happy lives after meeting in WoW(which acutlly happens). I just think " well, they get addicted to WoW, or they get addicted to drugs/alchol and kill a bunch of ppl over drug trades or drunk driving." theres only so many times you can hit level 80. I've been playing WoW since 05, and i am fine, alive and inschool
i hate when companies go after games. It's almost allways this one sided. "If you play games then you will DIE!" I personly think my wieght is based on my diet or exercise(or lack thereof). Im an advid games, but as an American, i do belive i have the right to play games. And my parents had the right to stop me. They bought me the games, its their property and i know that. What im trying to say is that the people that make theses commercials need to calm down, and take a more genteler aproch.
I counted 13 seconds of someone playing video games. If this is anti-game propaganda, it certainly isn't very good propaganda. Get over it! It's just wanting us to be more active and healthy.
It didn't show kids watching TV or reading a book, which are also not exercise. It showed a kid essentially killing THEMSELF within the game, then realizing games are bad and he should spend his time outside. So yes, somewhat subtle, but still obvious anti-gaming propaganda.
This is pretty good, but I wish that more ads would emphasize that you can be unfit and unhealthy whether you're large or slim, that ALL people need to eat reasonably and move around, and that BMI is not a definite predictor of health and that other factors come into play.
They also need to encourage people to live healthy, not shame them, and to remind them that it might take a while to make a habit out of it, and that's ok.
So going out and having to hunt our food in order to avoid starvation is a better way of living than what he have now? That's certainly what this ad seems to be saying.
and if everyone lived like people did in the old days e.g. walking kids to school, walking to the shop and back for your shopping easy little things like that people will live a hell of allot longer! a study was done with a bunch of unfitties and they were made to walk a measly 10,000 steps a day (about 4 miles) and at the end of the month they were considerably healthier and 3% less likely from health problems such as diabetes and heart illnesses! and thats 10,000 steps = nothing strenuous.
That line at the end about not living happily ever after is extremely bad for children who have yet to come to terms with the reality of mortality. I would like to thank Change4Life for terrifying my little brother when he realised his own death was inevitable. You're supposed to break that kind of thing gently, not have satanic clay figures just throw it in there willy nilly.
lmao, its hardly satanic clay models, kids will find this ad funny, and breaking the news to children that people cant escape death? lol well, i knew that when i was like 4 (i just thought tho people died cos there wernt enough room on earth for new kids) but, allot of children go through funerals of great gran parents, pets etc all the time- death is nothing new to a child, its all around.
They don't seem to have heard of simply playing videogames in moderation.
There's nothing wrong or fatal about watching television or eating fast food, it's all about moderation. I just detest the way they've branded these things as outright bad for you, it's important to enjoy yourself and relax too.
We are idiots, yes. What's really idiotic though is that the gov telling us how to live all the time. Leave the UK, it's a mess and not getting any better.
Excellent campaign, congrats to the DoH! What is really nauseating is some of the responses above, like "Our bodies, our business! "......? How dare you! Your fat, inactive and unhealthy body, my share of your medical bill through the taxes I pay! "nannyish"....??? Oh really? Are you not bothered about been exposed to advertising messages of greedy corporations about 100 times a day and you are bothered about been reminded that you should live a healthy life, for both yours and our benefit?
As I said on the other thread, most fat people work and pay taxes too. We're not a different species y'know, and if this Govt ban us from using the NHS I want a backdated refund. It's a shared risk system, and I'm sure you (like everyone) does things that some Dr would call 'risky'.
Your post is very angry - chill out, you'll burst a blood vessel which will take precious NHS resources to fix and which could be avoided by not hating fat people and deciding instead to live and let live ;o)
Being fat doesn't mean a person is unhealthy. That's an idiotic myth brought on by what society sees as "beautiful" and "healthy" not by facts. The fact is that heavier people have a lower mortality rate and are less likely to get things like cancer.
Also, studies show that most fat people live their lives just like thin people. We aren't over-eating sloths, my friend.
Why don't you learn to love everyone instead of hating people for things they can not and do not want to change?
The corporations advertise so they can get money, however, this campaign comes with no financial gain to anyone.
And how dare you say, "how dare you" to, our bodies our buisness. Many people know when they're getting unhealthy and they know it means they might get sick or die early, so if that thought doesn't get them acting I doubt a tv ad will, and in the case of children, if they're fat and unhealthy then their parents should do something about.
nothing to do with genetics and that some folk are only fat because they play PS3 all day and 'get their breakfast from the sweetshop'.
This campaign has already been criticised for lumping in T1 diabetics with the 'unhealthy, gonna DIE!' message. It's now been modified to basically say 'it's OK to bully fat T2's because they brought it on themselves, just leave the 'good' T1s alone. C4L is misguided, simplistic, nannyish, and a luxury a bankrupt Govt can't afford. Our bodies, our business!
According to the DoH website the aim of this cmapaign is not to 'hector or apportion blame'. Yet riding through Leeds today on the bus that's exactly the message I got. Endless posters carrying messages such as 'are you eating yourself to death' or 'why didn't you get off a stop earlier' every 20 yards or so. I've never seen an advertising campaign with such blanket coverage, and worst of all it's OUR money, which can't really be spared in a recession, being used to 'inform' us that body size...
This advert is a good for awareness, but in terms of practical advice going forwards, there is nothing the public sector will be able to achieve - all the help and products come from the private sector.
Are you really trying to be informative or are you just fueling the country's snobbishness and inequality of the overweight? Not to mention giving authorities another stick to hit parents with if such the case happens?
Just, don't get me started on this. I'm boiled enough from this idiotic campaign as it is... xP
I don't kwow if computer games make kids smarter or raise their IT skills, but i do know that instead of playing basketball outside (wich is very healthy), we're playing it on a pc (no exercise at all!)
Awesome animation with an important message, but I don't think it was necessary to go against computer games. They actually can make kids smarter and increase their IT skills.
this video would have you believe people were around at the time of dinosaurs which is factually incorrect and dangerous for small children to be exposed to. i think it shouldbebanned. justkiddingthis is thebest advert ever ooooxxxx
