  • great lesson and love your artworks. thanks for sharing the techniques with us

  • great tutorial... i am already his fan...=0

  • @iLOVENATURE2011 Join me on Facebook for updates and new paintings.

  • i wish i can paint like him...he made painting so easy to watch, i wonder if it would be that easy when i do it...=D

  • This is fantastic. I did this picture but didn't get the trees right so I changed them to taller pines. I also did it in acrylic as I haven't tried oils yet. Really want to tho. I've had so many compliments about the waterfall picture. Thanks for all your videos - you make it very motivating to keep painting.

  • @17merryl i used to use acrylic too, but i switched to oil and everthing works more better now, don't want anything else now :D only thing i don't like is that oil thakes forever to dry, i have a few paintings i did 6 mounths ago and they are still not dry allover.

  • really helpful and informative.. nice job.. thanks for sharing. :D

  • Wow! This is just too amazing. This is of great help for my partner who is also an artist. This is so informative and comprehensive. Thanks for the techniques and tips.

  • terrible rocks...everything else was top notch tho

  • A stiffer bristle brush would work best. Do you have a hog bristle Flat brush? I think a wash brush would be too soft to give the effect.

  • Wilson~

Do you think the waterfall effect could be done with a different brush? I have a limited amount of supplies, which, unfortunately, does not include a fan brush. I have considered trying to use a wash brush as a substitute, any input you have would be extremely helpful! Thanks!!

    Jon

  • @Ebony1315 you can use any flat brush is my experience, but the fan brush gets the best result. i would advice you to buy a fan-brush as soon as possable cause i can be used for a lot of cool things with paint ;)

  • thanks for all the great videos

  • wow!! great stuff!!

  • Your teaching is so simple but very effective, thank you so much..

  • unbelieveably simple and easy technique that i wouldn't of thought of at all, thanks for this tutorial.

  • i like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • best tutorial ever!

    thanks a million :)

  • I used Black Acrylic Gesso just on the bottom area to underpaint the rocks & water. I prefer LIQUIN ( made by Winsor/Newton ) as a clear medium. However, my own brand ( Bickford FastFlo Clear Medium ) will soon be on the market.

  • wilson .......did u put black acrylic on the whole canwas or just the bottom part?and i have never seen oil paints so thick! and is there a special oil paint medium?

  • thank you wilson...was really looking for this ..i always couldnt get it right for the water effect. it was really really good...

  • I use a #2 Script Liner.

  • what kind of brush do you use to sign paintings with I can't ever find anything that I can write with and usually use a gell pen.

  • I have a full-length Dvd titled, "SHALLOW FALLS", which shows how to do a complete waterfall scene. But, not a free lesson that focuses on the shrubs.

  • I did that using a 1" brush with mixtures of Sap Green and Van Dyke Brown for the darks and Titanium White, Cad. Yellow Pale and a little Sap Green for the highlights.

  • @wilsonbickford do you have a video to show how to do it

  • how do you do the shrubery

  • Sticky? You should put the Black Acrylic on first and it should dry within 30 minutes, or less. Once that's dry, you should apply a clear Oil Medium, which will remain "wet" for a few days. You want to start the actual painting and apply the colors while the Clear Oil is still wet / sticky.

  • @wilsonbickford ok it just seemed kinda tacky I will let you know how it turns out when i'm finished. I was wondering if you ever heard of a wet on wet technique called magic art? it used a base coat of what they called magic white that kept the canvas wet and slippery I painted snow mountain scenes with it but never found anything else

  • I used a canvas panel for this demonstration.

  • I've been wondering what kind paper was used in for painting..

  • You could use just the paint, but the colors will flow on easier if you apply a thin coat of a clear medium first.

  • @wilsonbickford my paint is still sticky to the touch should i wait to paint it's been more than 12 hours and still sticky

  • @tomgpjr1 oil paint takes a long time to dry. i have paintings i painted 6 mounths ago that are still not completly dry, the ticker you use the paint the longer it takes to dry.

  • for painting the sky over the gesso with blue and white do i use any medium or just the paint

  • You CAN paint the sky over the black area using White & Blue. You may have to apply it a little heavier to get good coverage and opacity.

  • ok i had a panel but i put gesso over the whole panel

  • do you paint the sky over the black gesso

  • It's the same as the basic sky lesson. The Black Gesso was only used from the top of the watefall on down.

  • how do you paint the sky, do you paint it over the gesso is it the same as your basic sky painting video?

  • You're very welcome. I'm glad they were of help.

  • i luv to paint...n i learned oil painting ......ur painting lessons really helped me out in improoving my painting......thnss for uploading these videos sir..:))

  • Whether you'll require one, or two coats of Black Gesso depends on the brand. Some are more opaque than others. If your canvas shows through, I'd apply a 2nd coat AFTER the 1st one is dry. ( which should only be 30 minutes tops, faster if you use a hair dryer ) And you'll want the Black to be completely dry before you apply the Clear Medium and Oils on top of it.

  • when applying the gesso do you use more than one coat ? I have canvas showing through. I also wanted to know how long I should let the gesso dry before I start painting. thanks

  • so helpful ! thanks a lot .

  • i really really love it

    and i learn from it

    thank you so much

  • Wilson, I have just watched 5 of your short videos and I want to commend you on your skill but also on how you keep the techniques simple and understandable. Keep up the good work. I'm sorry to say that until I found your videos, I had not heard of you but I will be paying better attention from now on. Thank You!

  • @arboristBlairGlenn Thank you for your kind words. I have several YT lessons, which I filmed myself, but also many others that were filmed with Jerry's Artarama. Be sure to "search" my name to access all of them.

  • Sir may i ask how did you the trees over there, Tried and tried, finally i wanted to know :) Please guide me :)

  • @hamsawhite For the background trees in the video, I used a 1" Foliage/Landscape Brush with a mixture of Sap Green, Ultramarine Blue and a little Van Dyke Brown for the darker shadowed tones. To highlight, I used Titanium White, Sap Green and Cadmium Yellow Pale. Check out my "Leaf Trees" video on YT for further reference.

  • Comment removed

  • what colors are the blue and purple

  • @tomgpjr Ultramarine Blue and Dioxazine Purple

  • wow! so helpful

    thank you very much

  • oh my god =O, thank you so much for sharing suhc a useful video, wawwwwwwwwwww i am learing uffffff a lot of you, thankssssssssss

    regards from lima peru

    helen

  • all this time i thought painters used thin brushes almost like makeup sized brushes and now i see you using brushes like u would use to paint a wall or something!! wats the difference?

  • @dynopup94 Big brushes for large areas and small brushes for smaller, tighter details.

  • JUST WOOOOOOOOOOOW...!

  • A month ago I started painting because of your videos!! you're the perfect teacher ever, please we need more videos, can you teach us how to draw a boat in the water in a sunset scene?? I'm trying to paint for my fiance 4 his birthday :-))

  • @mirakissez88 Thanks for watching my channel. I'm not sure when I'll be posting more lessons, as I'm busy finalizing my upcoming product line right now. In the meantime, watch my 2-part sunset video here on YT and try putting your in boat in it. Find a good photo of a boat to guide you as a reference and paint it on when your background has dried. You can sketch it onto the canvas lightly in pencil first.

  • great video , thanks!

  • Hi = ) My name is Rebecca and I LOVE yore lessons. I have tried to make the waterfall but I have no fan brush .. I have been looking for a fan brush in shops but I ca´t not find one = ( Is there any other brush I can use instead?

  • @darling87sweetdreams A fan brush is ideal for this, but a stiff bristle flat brush will work nicely, too. Don't use too much paint on the brush or it will leave a solid brushmark on the canvas. Tap the bristles into the paint to keep them separated and "open".

  • I wanted to paint a waterfall painting ...

and this one gave me the push to work for it..

    Thank you :)

This would be my first painting..

  • @hamsawhite Go for it. Painting is a "cumulative" process, the more you do it, the better you'll become. It'll take time, but it'll be worth it! You WILL improve.

  • tanks i what people told me sounded a lot harder

  • hi i just started oil im a 17 year old dyslexic but love art to the max but im scard to us my set plus i dint now about thiner

  • @lookintothesky123 Don't be afraid to give painting a try. It can be somewhat discouraging when starting out, but you will improve if you practice. That's how you learn. I simply use the paint thinner to thin my paints and for clean-up.

  • I am thankful for your effort on doing all this free lessons. I watched all your videos with big interest. THANK YOU!!

  • fan brush = love

  • you are best Mr Wilson

  • why do u paint it in black first?

  • @SubscribeToKiyo655 Using the black underneath gives the rocks and water a great deal of depth by establishing the darker, shadow tones within. From there, you only need to add mid-values and highlights.

  • Love how you applied the splashing effect with the fan, ive always used a toothbrush! lol. Probably not ordinary, but the stiff bristles work well for me, especially for snow effects. Thanks so much for the vids.

  • @strikenetter A toothbrush works fine, but gives you a broader area. I find I can "pinpoint" the spray in smaller areas with much more control, by using a Fan brush.

  • @wilsonbickford Thanks for the tip, never thought of that.

  • did you leave the black paint to dry before you painted the water on it?

  • @MartosJuli Yes, the black gesso was dry, then I put a very thin layer of clear oil medium over it.

  • well I thank you sir.I like how kind you are to help others learn to paint or draw.Your very thoaughtfull.

  • well ok but I just haven,t seen any.I haven,t had art lessons.Transparent glazes I only know clay in high school 1969.I suppose you could use fan brush spatter faint rainbow colors?Maybe?

  • @7466309change A "glaze" is transparent like colored glass. Use a clear oil medium with red, yellow and blue and paint narrow, "see-through" bands of color across the waterfall.

  • well ok but I just haven,t seen any.I haven,t had art lessons.Transparent glazes I only know clay in high school 1969.

  • nice but does any one add a mist rainbow?Like we see after a shower out doors.

  • @7466309change That can be achieved pretty easily when the painting is completely dry, by using transparent glazes.

  • I love this video! Thanks. I did a waterfall for my first oil painting. Do you have any suggestions on how to paint rushing water over rocks (in a stream that leads out from a waterfall)? I painted my rocks first, but when I put my water over it, the paint kept getting stuck in the lines from the knife (horizontal) texture of my rocks. I can't seem to post a link to the picture I'm trying to paint, but if you google "waterfall images" and click images it is the 6th picture (if that helps).

  • you are a great teacher. you make it seams so easy. thank you very much.

  • awesome .. n dat splatter in d end was so cool .. really helpful thanks

  • Thank you Mr. Bickford! You are the best painter on youtube, and very informative! I love you videos! Im going into college for my bachelors in art, I only hope that my professors are as good at teaching as you are!

  • Your paintings look so realistic and amazing. I once wondered if they were photos...then smacked myself in the forehead and realized these are way more beautiful than photographs. Amazing work. Thank you for sharing this with us.

  • V.nice!

  • Hi there, could you please give me some tips about how to great a rose?

    cheers,

    Rashin

  • I looked for the book mentioned in the beginning & all I could find featured acrylics. Not one for oils? Or are oils & acrylics basically the same when it comes to painting (less drying times, of course).

  • @rexenne Yes, my book is in Acrylics. My Dvd's and painting packets are all in Oil, with the exception of 1 Dvd in Watercolor. You'll find these on my website. The major difference between the 2 mediums is that Acrylics do dry MUCH faster and they thin down and clean up with water, instead of paint thinner. ( as Oils do )

  • Thank you so much. Such a wonderful lesson. I feel grateful to you.

  • @Kittima1962

Well, thank you very much. I appreciate that and I'm glad to have been of help.

  • how does one create line effect in waterfalls with chalk pastels?

  • @2424dawn I don't use chalk pastels, but I would assume that either the sharp edge of a square pastel stick, or a pastel pencil would do the trick.

  • Thank you... Very informative

  • it was amazing, deeply enjoyed watching your way of painting. please help me, so do i have to start with black paint ???

  • @forouzandeh1 Thanks for the positive feedback. So,...... do you have to start with a black background? No. If you start with a black background, will it make it 10 times easier? YES!

  • hi.

    ur a gr8 teacher.

when you do these demonstations what do you paint on to?

    whats easiest, canvas or others?

  • @thedarkcreator252

These demos are all done on canvas panels, because I prefer their rigidity and durability to stretched canvas.

  • this is fantastic!

  • СПАСИБО !!!!!! THANK YOU!!! :)))

  • you're my number one favorite from youtube! I love how you teach so easily. Of course, painting like you is hard, but It's easy to understand! I have a question. Do I need to wait the black gesso to dry completely? I tried it when it's still wet, but the color didn't show off clearly. Help me, please. :)

  • @Lylalee16

    Hi,

I'm glad you've enjoyed my lessons. Yes, the Black Gesso must be dry before proceeding with the oils. Let it dry for an hour or so, or you can use a hair dryer on it to dry it in just a few minutes.

  • @Lylalee16

Typically, the easiest way to render reflections in water is to pull the color of the reflected object ( trees, mountain, etc. ) straight down into the water. Keeping it somewhat "blurry" yields a convincing reflection effect. My full-length "Let's Paint A Sunset" Dvd is a great lesson for this.

  • Wow This is amazing =O It seems so simple the way you paint it but probably isn't xD I have a question though, not related to water falls though >.< How would you achieve a reflection affect on a sunset, like the one you did in that sunset tutorial but instead of grass it was water? Thanks, Keep up the great amazing work :D

  • I cant wait to try this, I love the way you teach you are straight to the point and I just want to see more . Im an artist I grew up watching Bob Ross. The world needs your techniqes , I havent seen many like you. Thanks

  • @nicholewoods34

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Before the end of the year, I will have my own complete line of signature painting products available. These will be geared to the wet-on-wet technique. Please refer back to my website periodically for updates and ordering information.

  • what on earth?!! It takes me hours to do stuff like that!

    you're so talented

  • @blahhh070

It just comes from experience and practice. I've been painting for over 20 years and I certainly didn't paint this quickly in the beginning. lol

  • mymichele111---lovely work

  • everyone please check out the video of my Oil painting. It took me 5 months to finish and its 4 feet by 6 feet. let me know what you think of the piece. the video is called - Monumental Oil painting- from start to finish

  • @N8wood1

    Excellent!

  • awesome....im off to try that now.

thanx 4 your vids on tips n trix

    cheers!

  • will you ever come to california

  • what do you paint on. Because my sister is going to teach me to oil paint but i need something to paint on.

  • @GUITAR1212112

Your least expensive option would be either canvas "paper" ( for practice ) , or canvas panels ( aka canvas "boards" ). You can find these at any art supply store.

  • thank you so much

  • fiquei encantada com sua tecnica, obrigada pela suas aulas, com elas tenho condições de melhorar asa minhas pinturas.

  • you are the person that got me into painting . I always struggled to find a hobby i acctually liked . You helped me soo much .

    Thanks alot !

  • @xSteelsnakex

I'm glad and honored to have been your inspiration. Thank you for watching my channel.

  • thnx 4 the info..

  • Do you offer classes?

  • DO I!!! That's how I make my living. You should visit my website, wilsonbickford d o t c o m

  • lol! I will be sure to check it out. Thanks

  • Why do you live so far away :(

However, thank you for putting up lessons for people that cannot make it to your classes. Hopefully in the future when my schedule is less busy Ill take one of your classes

Just some suggestions for future videos:

reflections of trees or anything else in water, mountains, dirt or dirt roads

THANK YOU!!! YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION and one of my new favorite artists.

  • @xxAisha25xx

Well, hopefully you can make it to one of my classes someday. I meet a lot of great people in this business and I know we'd have fun!

  • I love your videos they are really helpful esp for a beginner like me I just had a few questions can you do this with arcrylic paints as well also what type of thinner do you use also is a medium and paint thinner the same thing thank you!

  • Yes, you can do these techniques with Acrylics. I use odorless mineral spirits ( paint thinner ) for thinning my paint and cleaning my brushes. A "medium" is not thinner, but an oily base into which you blend your paints.

  • I love the splattering technique.

  • I do too. It's great for many different effects, such as falling snow, stars in the sky, flowers in a meadow and gravel texture on a road. I use it all the time.

  • Wonderful session !.Easy to follow and some wonderful effects done with ease..!

  • one question..

    where would that palette knife??

  • You can find that style of painting knife ( and many other types, as well ) at most art/craft stores. You'll also find lots to pick from at jerrysartarama d o t com

  • that is amazing. Is it possible to do in plain white kanvas paper?

  • Yes, that would be okay for practice.

  • i was wondeering for oil paints if you need to use paint thinner? m just starting out im i am very interested in painting, i was wondering because i went out and got an easel and a few acnvases and i was going to start painting tomorrow but we dont have paint thinner at this moment. is there and other solutions for it or suvstitutes for it. also is there any recomendations for it im kinda tight on money please respond thank you. =[)

  • with what are you cleaning your brush ??

  • Odorless Mineral Spirits ( paint thinner )

  • plz can u tell me on wat u r drawing zis is it a board??

  • I'm using a "canvas panel", which is available at any art & craft store.

  • ooh ok

    thnxx sir

  • my god i wish i cldve take tuition frm u

its so easy bt here in mauritius teachers make it difficult 4 us

  • another great lesson mr. bickford!!!

you showed the simplicity of painting...simple yet the value is still there.. =)

you inspire me to get involved into painting...tnx!!!!

  • Give it a try!

  • Would you show that in a video, you will probably be the only one on youtube that explains a method in which the end product looks good . lol

Thanks for the help otherwise ill let you know how it turns out

  • The water technique is very good. I prefer drawing in pencil but lately i've been wanting to tackle paints.

I don't have any primer, yet, but i do have canvas. Is it possible to start painting on the canvas, just as it is (even temporary) or to use primer all the time?

    Thank you

  • If by "primer", you're referring to the basecoats I use, no, they're not a necessity. However, I'm using a wet-on-wet approach here and the wet basecoats definitely make it easier to apply the colors and blend them.

  • @wilsonbickford, thank you. I know canvas 'coatings' as primers.

I loved the fan brush water effect you used. It was amazing to see realism water body and fall just by using one type of brush! I can't wait to get practicing.

I shall definitely watch your vids for ideas and inspirations. Thank you, again.

  • I have 20+ videos lessons in total. Some are posted by art companies, so just "search" my name to bring them ALL up.

  • Hi Wilson

Im in my 20's discovered painting late and find your videos most helpfull!! Best on youtube!!

I am working on painting the human figure, do you start with the dark lines then, shadow blob, and then color highlight highlight and then bright highlight ,( working like you do the rocks and clouds), or do you take a different approach? Thank you so much

  • Yes, it's pretty much the same approach. However, I think you'll find it easier to establish the mid-tones first. That way you can balance everything out with the darker and lighter values. It's easier to discern how dark and how light you need to go, when you can judge it against the mid-values.

  • awesome....i love the way you are teaching us...your techniques are very simple and quick..m an artist myself but i never knew that painting could be so simple.thanks

  • During 20+ years of painting, you pick up a few tricks, techniques and short-cuts along the way. My motto is, "Paint smart, not hard". If there's a simpler way to do something, I've found it through experimentation and trial and error.

  • thanx 4 rplying.......art is my only passion and love.m very eager to learn more and more..m glad you are here to teach us.MAY GOD BLESS YOU

  • wow!

  • I am deeply gratefull to you for taking the time to teach what you know...thank you from my heart, it has been a very helpful lesson, and so easy to understand.

  • You're welcome. Have fun with it!

  • I will, and will send you maybe a picture of what I did, so that you can tell me what you think? : ) Have a wonderful day.

  • You are a great artist.. Man i want your msn so we can chat together.. I really want to ask you about a lot of things. I hope you see my message :)

    YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but what is magic white? Where to get magic white? What happens if i just use "NORMAL WHITE"

  • Magic White is the brand name of a white oil-based painting medium. You can only purchase it through the manufacturer, alexanderart d o t c o m

  • you got to be kidding me, you make this look so goddamn easy! it look like oyu're not even trying xD this really inspires me to srat painting these kida stuff^^

  • awesome.

  • Is there another alternative for magic white medium? Something a little more affordable maybe. I can't seem to find it in the art stores i have visited.

    Thanks for the lesson!

  • You can simply make your own basecoat by using tubed White oil paint and thinning it down with any clear oil medium and a touch of paint thinner. Thin it to a consistency which is easily spreadable with the brush.

  • i was wondering if you had any videos of paintings that are done with painting knives. ive seen a few done and they look great. i would like to learn this technique. thank you

  • Although I teach that technique in my classes, I don't yet have anything on video.

    Perhaps in the future, though.

  • Can I buy a fan brush at the art store down my street? By the way I LOVE this painting you made!

  • I'd be willing to bet YES! Fan brushes are very common and most art stores carry different sizes and styles. You'll want a stiff Boar ( or Hog ) bristle, not a soft, synthetic one. A size #2 or #4 would be good.

  • Can you tell me where I can buy magic white and linseed oil???? I tried to paint without any of those and it came out ehhh...Do they sell it in the common craft stores?
