I was supposed to read Heart of Darkness for my degree as well as Jekyll and Hyde, but I only read the Robert Louis Stevenson. Would you recommend Heart of Darkness? It sounds depressing and scary, whereas J&H makes for one FABULOUS musical.

i read heart of darkness in 11th grade in highscool, and i think that it's one of those books where if we hadn't been reading it in school, i would've really enjoyed it. but i found that it was one of the most over-analysed books i've ever had to study, which led to my non-enjoyment of it.. booo! but i am currently reading the pilot's wife.. its fairly depressing... but SO GOOD. it's really well written and you really care for the character :)

I liked Heart of Darkness alright but I had to keep a running tab online of all the symbols and symbolism and blah blah to keep everything straight and really understand it all to its full potential. But then, the good books usually are the ones you can't just read haphazardly.

Oh no.. we had to read Heart of Darkness in Uni, and.. well, I didn't quite like it. Might be because I'm non-native, and we had to read it in English xD bloody difficult language Conrad uses. And ever since reading it, I've begun to see HoD references EVERYWHERE in English speaking cultures. At first it was annoying, but now it makes me feel smart, knowing where all "horror, horror!" lines etc derive from xD.

I want to read Jekyll and Hyde!!! I've read Heart of Darkness and it's a bit of a tough read because of the voice that tells the story. I actually fell asleep at one point (I was pretty tired :P) but there was something beautiful about it. I guess just the way the metaphors represent so many of the themes the book goes over. Maybe I was just brainwashed into thinking it was, I don't remember anymore :P Read it 3 years ago for english grade 12.
