The seal hunt IS important in Newfoundland. 6,000 people benefit. The entire province has the same population of a small city, but is spread out across vast amounts of land. With very few ways of earning income. More than have the people move away to make money. You shouldn't have to leave your perfectly safe home to make money, when you can live off the land. Just because they don't have their full "white-coats" on anymore doesn't mean they are suddenly no longer babies at a whopping, ripe, old age of 12-14 days old. Anyone who does not consider a 2 week to 3 month old being that's supposed to live 30 years a baby, needs to have their 7 day old puppy or kitten clubbed and skinned alive before them. There are many millions of seals in the region in question. The numbers have grown drastically in recent years for various reasons, hence a strictly regulated annual cull.

The people in Newfoundland and Quebec who hunt seals do so to make a modest, age-old living. Contrary to the Fox report, much or most of the seal meat is eaten. These people walk MUCH more softly on the earth than any of us car/SUV driving, beef-eating, jet-flying, city-dwelling gluttonous consumers.

It's a complex issue. Any non-vegetarian who objects to the seal hunt without immediately swearing off meat is a complete hypocrite. (Ditto any consumer who possesses leather.) By the American governments decision to wage the illegal war in Iraq 1000's of innocent civilians have been killed, which are a lot more precious than seals. I agree that seals should be killed as humanely as possible and the practice of clubbing must be stopped. Seals are used for clothing and are integral to the native Canadians way of life. I really don't understand why people are going after Canada. I mean Russia, and Norway do the seal hunt too but I don't hear Americans condemning them.

Without the fat and fur from hunting, the Inuit would have perished long ago, and most Canadians firmly believe that the Inuit have the right to continue living this traditional lifestyle. Saying that the traditional native lifestyle is "irrelevant" will likely have you dismissed by Canadians as being ignorant and culturally insensitive. The modern east-coast seal hunt, however, is NOT traditional. It is practiced by non-natives. This is the argument that must be made to have it stopped.

Canadians take great pride in the protections afforded to the native Americans that were here before the arrival of the Europeans.
