  • and so kids,...that's when superglue became a thing....

  • i never thought the phantom could be so ironic and funny!!! cant wait to quote these lines to my POTO friends!

  • I think what makes Carlotta such a riot is that she has no stage etiquette. She doesn't just go along with mistakes, she cannot hold her composure and she is down-right terrible at everything.

  • That is sooo crueL! But i love how he says it! "Oh! Thats too bad!" so evil but so uncaring at the same time! Love it!

  • "Did you see what happened to Carlotta?"

    "No, what?"

    "Her debut was a disaster."

    (Derisively) "Oh! That's too bad!"

    LOL phantom!

  • that giant bow like thing under his chin is so distracting! :P

  • "Can't say I didn't warn you." "Who is that?" "Who do you think?" lol! I love it! And I can't believe the Phantom hasn't said it before! I mean, seriously, you hear a voice talking to you through a wall; I think your options are limited on who it could be.

  • how did Erik know which one was to be her's???... lol funny...

  • that is soo sarcasic what he says whe he is talking to Christine made me laugh!! And Carlotta! needs to stop strangling that cat!!

  • 0:00 to 00:4, that painting is beautiful, who is the artist ? I'm not familiar with that one and I've seen dozens of classic works of art.

  • "Let me tell you as someone who doesn't know much about opera

I never knew it could be so funny!"

  • Comment removed

  • haaahaaahaaaa! that so funny

  • what is the song that carlotta is singing

  • @Doctor1137 From Verdi's La Traviata; she is singing the Brindisi or Drinking Song from Act 1, it's a tragic love story set in Paris about Violetta the courtesan and her Alfredo, check out La Traviata on Youtube

  • If she was truly a professinoal, she WOULD NOT act like that!!

  • "you are music itself"

it sounds like bécquer poem :p

  • @adkdmlie I'm pretty sure it's a reference to the Yeston-Kopit musical (that this TV miniseries is the non-musical version of). There's a song called "You Are Music". :3

  • My message to Christine: kiss him. kiss him!! KISS HIM YOU FOOL!!!

  • I want him as my vocal teacher T.T

  • omg her voice is gonna kill my ears!!!!!!!!!-Carlotta

  • bwahahaha i like this type of relationship between the phantom and christine. He walks in, she tells him about carlotta's debut, and the whole time she gets to hang out with him! now if only she fell in love with him -bops christine on the head- you're a warm blooded woman, what's wrong with you?!

  • Carlotta!: Come for the big name, stay for the comedy. :D

  • oh god theyve mutalated the character of roul!!!! :(

in the book he was sweet charming and innocnt, so in love with christene that it nearly drives him mad, but theyve turned him into a manwhore

  • @gabbylovesu2 everyone hates him anyway in favor of Erik, so....

  • @gabbylovesu2 That's not Raoul, that's Phillipe (Raoul's older brother from the 1911 novel of the phantom by Gaston Leroux).

  • Christine is charmingly insecure. It'd be easy to play her as someone who is quite knowledgeable of her own talent, but Teri Polo is genius in making her seems like a modest little waif who simply loved music and didn't know he had the skills.

And I am falling in love with Charles Dance. What a voice. What eyes. Why are so many older British men so darn attractive? <3

  • @jazzandmint me too!!! aaaaah!!!

  • Haha, at 0:17 - 0:22 Carlotta sounded exactly like Cruella De Vil! I love this version of Phantom of the Opera, I especially love how Charles Dance portrays Erik!

  • I think Verdi's rolling in his grave with this performance of 'La Traviata'. D:

  • @BaccioDiMaschera In a good way, hopefully? (snickers*)

  • I want to see this in german (*cry*) can someone help me please?

  • Hey La Traviata, love this opera with Luciano Pavarotti.

  • -breaks into song- OOHHHH YOUUU AREE MUSSICCC! I wish they would have left that song in.

  • Charles Dance was 44 years old in this movie O.o...

  • @JennaxDify That's a good thing - the Phantom should be roughly that age.

  • @theblacksister I love Charles Dance in this. He makes Erik so charming and witty, even when hes menacing! Hes just sweet, and has the most expressive eyes.

  • @JennaxDify

He probably would have been late thirties-early forties.

  • @fedrebel03 He was 44. He was born in 1946 (:

  • @JennaxDify

Lol I wasn't talking about Charles Dance, I was talking about Erik.

  • @fedrebel03 LOL :D sorry ^^

  • this version is wonderful. the 1983 version was a disgrace -.-

  • @queenofsingin99 i meant the 1989 version **

  • @queenofsingin99 By the way, I know its naughty, but when Carlotta storms of the stage like that she reminds me of Miss Piggy...(sorry!)

  • @MrsJosephMerrick BAHAHHAHAAAHHAHA! I love that! It's true. Shes such a diva! Drivees me nuts

  • @MrsJosephMerrick it's not naughty, it's accurate!

  • I love the way he said "Who do you think?" hes like "NA NA NA NA NA!"

  • @queenofsingin99 ''Sometimes dreams can be real...''Theres so many good quotes in this version, dont you think? Ah, hes so sweet, and sad inside. He desparately needs a hug. And he also looks good in frilly shirts...:)

  • @MrsJosephMerrick rofl YES! I love when hes all awkward, when he first confronts Christine. He's so sweet.

  • @queenofsingin99 In this version Erik is really sweet - a far cry indeed from the original who actually was quite violent! Even when hes talking about the ''murders'' he so passe about it, you have to smile - but thats CD's acting for you, suave and gentlemanly!

  • @MrsJosephMerrick I used the word ''passe'', but the word ''blase'' suits Erik when describing his murders better...Hes simply unimpressed!

  • @MrsJosephMerrick oh yes, completely!

  • This vrsion is AMAZING, if only because Erik has a sense of humour, actually gets to know Christine, and Carlotta is awful ^_^ I'm serious, often in ALW's version, Carlotta is really not a bad opera singer at all, it's just that most people don't like opera to begin with, so it seems bad because she's singing it with vibratto, the way it should sound, and Christine sings it like a ballad from a normal musical

  • holy shit! it's Cruella De Vil! at 0:22

  • when he looks at her, it's like a puppy's eyes...(sigh)

  • I love this Christine. She has such an innocent and beautiful (inside and out) look to her it makes you wonder...what happened to people like that?

  • When Carlotta laughs, all I can think of is Cruella De Vil. When she sings...

Ouch is all I can say.

  • @insaneforstuff254

or the bad witch in arielle :D

  • @insaneforstuff254 OMG you are so right. watching you from underneath a rock carl-otta carlottta. I hope you found that funny.

  • *head palm* Ad lib Carlotta! You're an actress! Lol.

  • Worse rendition of "Sempre Libre"!Gherighiu 's rendition is executed deftly and with old school polish!

  • Charismatic actors make for a more interesting viewing... I know its supposed to be tragic, but so far its been rather lively.

  • Dance makes me laugh so hard! he is so funny! i love him!

  • Eriks voice threw the walls tickles my funny bones! i love him soo much!

  • Lol!

    The tray is hilarious!

  • what is the song/opera at the end of this part? It sounds SO familiar, but I can't think of it.

  • It's called the Drinking Song from the opera La Traviata. Yeah, it's really famous and well-known.

  • hah heh Phantom is a sneaky little bugger xD

  • As someone who doesn't know that much about opera...

I never knew it could be so funny!

    *snicker*

    LOL!!!

    Thanks so much for uploading!

  • "Her debut was a disaster."

    Oh, that! That's too bad!"

  • This is the origin of stand up comics

  • 'can't say i didn't worned ya'

    'who is that?'

    'what do you think'?

    lol

  • I LOVE THIS.

  • Thank you for the putting this up

  • she is 20 and raoul is 21 in the book

  • Hey, which opera is that? Please, someone can tell me?

I prefer this version. That's beautiful, and in the version of 2004 they don't sing in French... but I don't dislike that version anyway :)

  • La Traviatta

  • Thank you!

  • La Traviata by Verdi. The Drinking Song

  • Thank you!

  • yes they do go to languages, and the opera is Faust.

  • Hahaha! I am loving this version! Erik sounds like a mix between David Bowie in Labyrinth and Adam West.

  • "oh, that's to bad" love him

  • i love this but i like the 2004 version much better but this is nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "I never knew it could be so funny!" LOL!

  • I love when he says ...

Christine: Her performance was a disaster

Erik: Oh.. that's too bad :P

  • ok by far Emmy Rossum was the BEST Christine yet.

  • Are you serious? The girl can't act! She's one of, if not, the worst. I believe the 1st actress, the 1943 Christine (My favorite), Jill Schloen (1989), and Sarah Brightman (Though she lacked stage presence) were the best. The 1943 Claude Rains Christine is by far the best for she was an amazing actress and a brilliant singer.

  • i agree with u

  • no i agree emmy rossum is awsome

  • I love the line in here "Sometimes dreams can be real."

  • Philipe what's his name. The Raoul dude just got the shaft from the Erik. What do y'all think of that?

  • LOL! ya! srry im a Raoul hater, or Philipe hater. i think its cool how they had philipe be the lover in the book he was Raouls brother. and i saw this and im like wow character change. but i like it cuz they never include philipe, just raoul.

  • Quite interesting. Have you ever read the original novel?

  • the novel by gaston leurox? That's my favorite book i've read it six times lol!

  • Wow! You love this stuff obviously. Do you identify with the character of Erik? Lonely and rejected.

  • yes, but I also add in beautiful and talented cuz he was!

  • What do you mean by beaituful? His face wasn't beaitful. I agree with talent. Erik isn't exactly beaitful in all verison of Phantom of Opera example 1989 Robert Englund verison.

  • LOL! i mean like he was a beautiful person on the inside. in some cases he was a jerk, but that's just b/c he was brought up on hatred and never had love. in this 1 I like it cuz he did have love and his parents loved him.

  • What do you mean he was beaitful on the inside? What quality make him beaitful and a jerk at the same time? Do you think his relationship w/Christine was a form of incest?

    Desire for his mother.

  • well at times he was beautiful (his art and love he showed for christine) at times he was a jerk (like when he gets really angry and cant control himself). hmmmmm..... idk about christine. I believe he really loved her like lovers do. but at times I get confused and think he's just thinking of his mom. it's so confusing!!!!

  • What do you mean "loved her like lovers do"? Unconditional love?

  • yea. like he had feelings for her not just because he reminded her of his mother.

  • But is love only a feeling?

  • love is many things. a feeling. an emotion. a tragedy. a happy ending. etc.

  • Describe love in your words? Be more descriptive. Love is...

  • hmm... well. love is EVERYTHING! lol! if I told you what it ment It would take me forever! srry 4 not much describtion, but seriously to me its everything you can think of.

  • Could you be more speific? Is love hurting someone physically? Everything is vague. I know you can be more speficic. Maybe this would help. Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not envy. It does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking. Describe what love is in your own words? I can you can do it.

  • "You are music itself" and "I would never want to hurt you". "Sometimes dreams are real". Wow! This guy is deep.

  • Love the inspector.

  • I think it's unfair that carlotta gets to be the lead cuz her husbands manager.

  • Do you think it was unfair that Sarah Brightman got to be the first Christine because her husband was the composer?

  • not really, even though she's a fantastic singer! the only reason andrew wrote the musical was 4 her. I'm grateful he wrote it cuz i love it SO much, but I wish there was another reason for writing it.....

  • Like what other reason?

  • like just 4 the love of writing musicals. He's my favorite! he did really well with the music and the story.

  • Yes,I guess that is a good reason. Some people don't like how the story ends though. Erik (Phantom) doesn't get Christine. What do you think of that?

  • I HATED that!!!!! :( I wrote a short paper about Erik falling in love with one of christines kids. Ppl loved that! lol! I think he should have someone 2 love like everyone.

  • Whose Ppl? Why do you think everyone deserves someone to love? Have you ever thought about the concept of grace in this story? Christine shows unmerited favor to Erik even though she doesn't have to. He shows her grace by giving her singing lessons. Just a thought.

  • I think if Erik did get Christine in the end, the story would've lost his, for lack of a better word, appeal to everyone. A man who gets shunned by everyone (Erik) then finally finds someone to love, and almost loves him back, only to lose her, makes for a much more interesting story then a man who has everything (Raoul, or Phillipe in this nersion) loses one thing.

P.s. You kinda remind me of Socrates. You know, asking people to go deeper in their explanations. That's pretty awesome. :)

  • Thanks for the compliment. You're right it does make the story more appealing. I guess the story of the Phantom has an everyman or woman appeal to it. We can identify with Erik in some way.

  • Yes, I do. She was a little old for the role, don't you think?

  • I don't know. How old was she? When this made-for-t.v. movie was filmed?

  • I meant Sarah Brightman.

  • Oh. I guess she was a little one. How old is Christine supposed to be according to Leroux?

  • Well I believe at least in her early 20's.

  • I thought she was supposed to be younger like closer to 17 or 18?

  • She's supposed to be 16 and Raoul (I haven't seen this before, so I don't know whether her appears in this version or not) should be 21, although he's supposed to look 18. That's according to Leroux, like you were wondering.

  • @lshield1

Her alternate was so much better.

  • i love this movie!

  • Yes, thank you so much, please don't lose this.

  • THANK YOU for posting this! I only saw it once when it first aired, and ever since I've wondered if I would still like it if I saw it again... I do!
