hi im a young baritone and i love opera! i was wondering if u had any advice for me as u being an expierenced bass/baritone on the opera stage? anything would be sweet!! thank u!
I've been working on a new project to help promote opera singing. I want more high schools, colleges and communities to mount more opera performances. It's all well and good to have HD TV broadcasts from the Met but we need live performances too. I can't go into the details here but my approach is high tech. Stay tuned.
Happy for your posting of RIchard. He has a great 'quality' voice of super stars. You lost track of him after Boheme but I found him in Aubern, Ca. He had trouble with his high notes. He lived at my home and I taught him to sing Helden Tenor and through my friend Henry Holt we got him an engagement in Augsburg, Germany as Siegmund in La Walkurie. I later got him a performance of Pagliacci in Romania. I saw him last as Otello at Berkeley Opera. Thanks for this and your Bonisoli comment
Thanks Claude. I didn't know he had sung with Berkeley opera. Sorry I missed it.
Sorry I missed hearing you too. I came to SF in 64 and you had already gone by then. Of course you had been singing baritone then. When I got here I heard Vinay in his baritone period. I know you two sang together as Otello and Iago - one going up and one going down. Cool.
@Agorante Actually, in 64 I made my debut in Munich as King Stag. It was to have been Parsifal that was cancelled due to technical difficulties. I sang at the National Theater for 7 years guesting at Bayreuth, La Scala, Hamburg, Venice, etc, etc. as Siegfried, Siegmund, Tristan, Florestan, Otello, Turiddo etc.
If you are in the DC area, did you know Evelyn and Tom with their Emerging Artists program? Do you have something on Youtube where I can see or hear you?
No, I'm FROM the DC area not IN the DC area. Thank god! This morning in Oakland CA it is about 60. My relatives in the Washington DC area are enjoying temperatures above 100.
I sang with the Opera Theater of Northern Virginia in "The Good Soldier Schweik" in the sixties. I don't know of the Emerging Artists program.
I have about fifty YouTube videos posted. I sing in about a dozen of these. I'd be flattered if you listened, but be kind.
@Agorante It was difficult finding the 'dozen' out of the 50, but I did manage to hear some of you and others. You have a first class instrument that allows you to do a variety of roles. My favorite bass was Jerry Hines. I hired him to sing Boris in Oakland Opera's production back in 89. Your channel says you are 67; I was 67 when I recorded my Youtube Otello duet 25 yrs after retirement. I still do it at 83 with 2 by-passes and one lung at about that level. The key is keep singing daily!
Thanks for the kind remarks. I and my wife were involved with Oakland Opera a little later when it was reorganized under new (mis)management.
We have a mutual friend - Ross Halper.
I am indeed 67. The odd thing is that even with my own heart problems I sing better today than I did thirty years ago. I remember Ross saying once that, " many tenors sing after 50 - but I don't want to hear them". Now that Ross is himself past fifty he seems to have forgotten that.
@Agorante The 'Three Tenors' all sang well after 60! Stay in shape! A singer is a vocal athelete, keep the muscles strong and flexible. By the way, is Hunding in your repertoire? If not, check it out...I can still sing Siegmund and know a couple of good Sieglindes.
I'm very aware of the ages of the Three Tenors ever since my girl friend told me she was also sleeping with Domingo. He's almost excatly two years older than I am. Old fart.
Your suggestion about Walkure is intoxicating but I mustn't. The last three operas in which I have been cast, I had to drop out of because of health issues. As Ambroise Bierce once said - "Death is nature's way of telling you to slow down".
that's a really good low Ab for a tenor...he almost sounds like a lyric baritone
