I personally think that the main (and perhaps only) difference is that psytrance is a bit harder than goa.

Goa and Psychedelic are similar but I could define several differences if you asked.

Psytrance and goa while familiar genres are not the same thing.

Compare for example astral projection with parvati records. the first is one of the best known goa projects, the second is a dark psychedelic trance label. The most noticiable diferences between goa and psy is the first is more melodic and has influences from indian/easter music.

There was goatrance, psychedelic goa and just pure psychedelic trance, that makes no reference at all to early goa.
