Take a look at the smart roadster. 790kg, on a full-optional car. why? its a 700cc Turbocharged engine, and with good chiptuning in could give 110-120HP and an extreme good torque thanks to the turbocharger. Sadly, they failed with the gearbox.
In the lotus elise, I think they failed with the engine! they should have put something like 1200cc turbo with 200HP

This car is what I would call "Back to the roots".
It's made for fun, for good handling, for performance.
It's better than others cars that worth many $100k.
Either you focus on one thing, either you get a heavy car, with poor MPG and very expensive.
And money can't buy lightness. 1500 kg will never feel like 900.
1500 kg will never brake like 900 kg. 1500 kg will never turn like 900 kg.
This is pure and basic Physics. Look at the formulas, weight is always involved in the forces.
