the smokey smell from your heater most likely is the dust burning from the coils on the heater. it happens when the oil heat turns on in my house for the first time of the cold season. nothing to be worried about.
Oh god, there is no way I'd go shopping that day. It's just not worth it. People are way too hardcore for me.

LOL! I'd rather die than go shopping at 5AM... Yet another aspect of Thanksgiving us foriegners will never get.
The smoke alarm was probably dust in the heater burning off because it's the first use of the season.
Don't fuck around too much inside the smoke detector, those things are radioactive!
